The Epyx games were starting to feel 'samey' at this point. Still fantastic to look at but gameplay wise they were starting to feel limited.

My favorite „Games“ game. I loved the biathlon and bobsled, but the other disciplines were also cool. Incredible fun with 2+ players!

Very fun, and it sort of does quite well in competitive mode for up to 8. Most I played was 4, though.

The sporting disciplines are more fun, and fewer stupid joystick wagglers compared to Summer Games, for example.

Multiload, so tape version requires you flip it.

In my opinion, the best one of all the sports-games from "Epyx". And this means a lot, cause they are nearly all very good. Epyx nearly almost did a good job on these games, but this I like most. Here I really like ALL disciplines. Big fun especially, when playing together with friends. We even had our fun at the beginning, with choosing a country, listen to his hymn and name the players. Especially for 1984 this game was fantastic when you look at the graphics and all these stuff. People which like C64, should have a look at this game.

Great fun to play with a group of friends. I particularly loved the hot dog section. Trying to get as many flicks in before getting that landing perfect. Good times.

Hours of fun with friends, loved it. It has a lot of replayability.
My favorite item was biathlon.
Games like this aren't made nowadays.

I just played a round. It's almost perfect. Would the second figure skating event have been replaced by an alpine skiing event, it would be literally perfect. Never mind, 9/10.

Ok, I admit it: If you scroll down you'll notive that I complain about the absence of alpine skiing every couple of years. So here's something new: Ever noticed that this must be the only game in which Yugoslavia (where the actual Winter Olymics 1984 took place) shows up? You cannot choose Yugoslavia as a country, but Yugoslavian referees give marks in the respective events.

Ah yes, Yugoslavia... What a beautiful and progressive country that was... And how quickly time passes...

This series of the game (summer games and winter games from Epyx) could be playable still for all the family and spend a nice time. Today there isn't game like that.

Played it but never owned it. My cousin and a couple friends had this game and once in a while we would all get together and do multi-player competitions. I remember kicking ass in the biathlon and freestyle.

Def in my top 5 of C64 games. Got this as a Xmas present and have fond memories of playing this with my bro whilst stuffing our faces with giant Toblerone. I've got this game on a neat gadget I bought recently which is a joystick you plug directly into the T. V. With 50 C64 games built into the joystick housing. When I play this I can almost taste the nougat bits!

Right... I'm off to the shops :pacman: :pacman:

Loved this game and if I'm honest probably my favourite game on the C64. However the only disappointment was the 2 figure skating events both were rubbish but they should have only had one and maybe put in a slalom ski event

A fun multi event game a winter wonderland. You had Summer Games and here's Winter Games. I like it for the option of a quick play by doing one or some of the events or if you want you can go all the way and compete in every event. Functional renditions of the the games and countries music and good effects makes for a fun game with good replay value. I like it :)

A classic.
I would rate this as one of THE very finest games on the C64.
The graphics in the Biathlon event (along with the sound effects of the river) were astounding at the time.
This gets a solid 9/10 from me.

I rememeber buying one of those plug in and play joysticks which had some C64 games on in about 2005.

Snapped it doing the Biathlon lol. :D

What can I say?? Superb game and the best of the four "games" from epyx.
World on 2nd, Summer 1 on 3rd and Summer 2 on 4th. Ski jump the most funny event. But why call that first event for "hot dog"??? It's Free style...

Come on folks, it's Olympic time - time to play Winter Games!

@Eshaktaar: Yeah, the landscape paintings are a piece of art.

@Dannie: I don't think so, check out the respective Zzap review.

@Roscoe: Almost a masterpiece, to be precise. It's a pity that Epyx didn't include any alpine skiing events (see below).

@Canute: :thumbsup:

To admin: you guys made a mistake as this was released in 1986 on the C64.
All the best

Epyx was king. Along with their other Olympiad games, this was about the most fun you could have in a multi-player game. Plus, the Olympics used to be interesting to watch in the 80s which fueled my interest in the video Games.

A true classic, and the only winter olympic games worth playing. The only thing that's missing is alpine skiing - it seems a bit as if the skiing event of World Games was intended to be included here, but not finished soon enough, so they made two events out of one skating game here, which is the only annoyng thing about this one.

Epyx was one of the best companies in computer gaming. Where to start first? California games, summer games, world games ... :P Winter games is no exception.
A true masterpiece a game that you can play for ever.
10/10. I still remember 6 friends sitting near a C64 waiting for there turn to play, 20 years ago. That beats any mutiplaying experience for my money.  :commodore:

I agree the two figure skating events were a bit disappointing. It seemed like the developers went out of ideas.

Bobslet is great, played it over and over again to advance my record.

While I personally find Summer Games I & II a lot better than this game, this one is still a very good game, certainly miles ahead of The Games: Winter Edition. My only complaint is the two figure skating events, they're too similar in my opinion. A true C64 classic, none the less!

Great game. Every single event is easy to grasp, unlike the summer varieties.
My 6 year old played this recently on my PC and loved it. He has a Playstation 2 but still found this game extremely entertaining. Epyx just ruled this type of game. Beats the likes of hypersports and DT Decathlon.

The least intresting out of the early games series. The multi load was very long and frustruting too
Spin-Sah 2004-07-23
Great game. There's a bug in it I found out in the Figure Skating module which gets you 6. 0's (top score in this event) across the board. For the first half, do a series of jumps but DON'T LAND SAFELY on any of them, let yourself fall. Then for the second half, just hold the joystick down so she keeps falling, getting up, falling, getting up, etc. (it looks like she's bowing to the skating god or something) until time runs out. You'll get a perfect score everytime.
Sand_monkey 2004-05-29
Ummmm OK then...

I love this game, almost as much as World games :)
Swissjack 2004-03-09
For me THE BEST SPORTS-GAME on the C64.

1. Winter Games 2. World Games 3. The Games - Winter Edition, 4. Summer Games II, 5. California Games, 6. The Games - Summer Edition, 7. Summer Games I.
Classical music is fab 2003-12-28
I love this game. It has everything. It even plays a piece from my beloved Tchaikovsky in one of the skating events (Waltz of the flowers from the Nutcracker suite).
Adrian 2003-12-13
This is an excellent game but it's fairly hard to find a copy with the bloody instructions in it. I could never figure out how to score consistantly well in the Figure and Free skating events. I once fluked a score of 5. 4 in the figure skating but I don't know how the heck I did it. I always liked the way Epyx did speed events. Much better than arm aching Waggle games, you had to use rhythm and timing instead of breaking the joystick by yanking it vigorously back and forth. Biathlon was my favourite event but I liked all of them.
mateo 2003-12-10
Hey Winter Games was arguably the best in Epyx' Games series. I remember my PB in speed skating was 25 seconds flat, my other records I can't recall.
NYCeguy24 2003-11-22
I'd wake up especially early on cold winter mornings to give this a go. Ski Jump and Hot dog were my favorites.
Frits 2003-11-20
Very good game as is all the "games" series. Only hampered with long loading times on tape!
Steve Green 2003-10-30
Great game - although the load times were a pain between events. I was a Biathalon master. One thing I didn't like was how you had to go through the whole long figure skating event even if you screwed up and wanted to abort. And once you fell once, it seemed like your whole rhythm was off for the entire routine. I hated how if you tried to get the skater to do something she couldn't do, she would just kneel there. But anyway, the game was good all in all. I liked practice mode, especially on the Hot Dog which I was pretty good at getting 10's on. The game was too long overall though.
Faraz 2003-10-24
Bob sled, Hot Dog and speed skating were the bomb. I could never figure out how to do biathlon correctly.
80s.man 2003-10-23
Alot of my friends still get together every so often and play this along with the summer games. Great games, sounds, events, everything!
Press play on tape 2003-10-11
I recall an oddity in the long jump: if you managed to bend your knees completely in mid air and extend them before landing, you could get impressive lengths _and_ 20 for style. (A quibble: it irritated me as a Norwegian that one could not set a proper Telemark landing) How many managed to do a backward followed by a forward sommersault in the freestye - a sure top scorer?
Gilo 2003-09-20
It goes without saying that some of the individual events could have been released as standalone versions, such was their playability, especially the Ice Skating. Epyx set the standard of multi-event gaming and they have never been beaten on any platform. This game was so good I used to wear a bobble hat and googles, and had a fan on my desk blasting cold air into my face whenever I did the ski-jump. 10/10.
James 2003-09-14
My best for the biathlon was a time of 1. 32 but I once did it in 1. 31 but had a 5 second penalty added on for missing a target in the shooting. Can anyone beat that?.
Squonk 2003-09-13
A lot of great games in this multi event olympic game... Biathlon has beautiful graphics and I still remember how much this game made me dream... I was dreaming programming a biathlon with more than 30 differents screens to make it incredible... Skijump is very technical and I loved it, I never really understood which were the best trajectories for bobslegh... But anyway, this game is great, for sure
Sonance 2003-08-04
Another classic sports game from Epyx. Almost as much fun as Summer Games II, but gets a few points deducted for the Figure Skating and Free Skating being too darned similar. If they'd replaced one of them with the Slalom Skiing from World Games, this would have been perfect!
Firefly 2003-07-16
Fun game, played this a TON as a kid.
Reg 2003-06-02
Sadly they don't make em like this anymore
Andy 2003-04-28
I used to enjoy trying to beat my personal bests on this excellent game. I was obsessed with it at one point. I ended up with:- Hot dog-10, Biathlon-1. 32, Speed Skating-0:25. 8, Figure skating-4. 9, Ski jumping-220. 5, Free skating-4. 7 and Bobsled-21. 59.
Oggy 2003-04-28
Brilliant stuff! , I played and played and played this until I mastered it. None of my friends could get close to my speed skating time of 25. 7 seconds.

All good events except this figure skating or whatever it is called. It was real pain in the ass when you played with 8 players yourself (to avoid cassette loading times) and had to endure that crappy event
TWR 2003-01-16
10 out of 10 for a sports-game. Simply brilliant.
Joachim Commodore 2003-01-09
I love this game! I was truly sad when I lost my copy of california games, but I have found my replacement. Summer games and world games (can anyone figure out sumo wrestling?) are also exceptional games
Itekei 2003-01-09
Twas my 2nd game for my beloved C64. I still got to chuckle over my friend who kept a pirate copy of the Winter Games tape within a hollow book (!) in his parents' bookshelf. He told me about years of prison, cut off hands, whips, purgatory and stuff like that in case someone finds out about our little secret. I really believed him, operation danger *g* Anyway, back to topic. Winter Games is one of Epyx' great sport titles, lots of fun to play with others !
Rick Kulacki Jr. 2003-01-07
My friends and I still have tournaments in this game! Fun to play alone, but better with a group of people.
Rami 2002-12-10

Ok, I was only 5 when I got this game, but I played it with my sister all the time! It's a great game. Even though I am 13 really, It's brilliant. Some reason, I used to allways pick canada. Lol. But, I would love to download it a play it agian. :)
Thelbane 2002-11-04
For some reason, I loved the ski jump event. I think it reminded me of the cool ski jump in For Your Eyes Only. The music and graphics really transported me. :)
Molle 2002-10-23
Along with friends and a bag of beer it was great.
Marko 2002-10-06
I remember when I have invited a friend to play this game against me. I have practised all competions several times and I was sure, that he will have no chance against me. And what happened? He beat me in ski-jumping!
Ravage 2002-09-29
I recall putting down the SNES to pick up this game with my cousin... There just aren't many games out there anymore with this kind of multiplayer appeal.
Holger 2002-09-03
Comeon ?SYNTAX ERROR, maybe they fucked up the anthems (also the Danish one) but it deserves a lot more than 6. 5/10. Winter Games is a perfect 10! Played it till death with my friends and littlebrother all the time!
WiDDY 2002-09-03
My all-time favourite sports game from Epyx!
?SYNTAX ERROR 2002-09-03
I enjoyed the all the little sub-games, however there was one thing that really let the Epyx team down with this, and their other games series. They MADE UP some countries' National Anthems!!! (Including Australia, the Soviet Union, etc). 6. 5/10 (I would give them a 7 if they had been more accurate musically).
WaiLun 2002-08-21
Absolutely playable as hell. The opening ceremony animation for its time just made my jaw drop.
Bandicoot 2002-07-11
As good as the summer games! Great fun!
Adelie PC 2002-03-21
I agree with Argo... This game is literally better than the PS2 game. "Unparralleled atmosphere" sums up the feel of this game perfectly. Winter Games is the only other Olympic sports game for ANY system that comes close to Summer Games 2... Maybe even surpasses. Hmmm, I'll have to load up the good ol' CCS64 emulator to come to a conclusion.
Argo 2002-02-24
I've recently played the new PS2 winter games - game - and even though the graphics are far superior then the C64 game, gameplay simply does not compare to the old game. There has never been a finer example of Winter sports since this original game was first released. - Unparralled atmosphere!
Laner 2002-02-20
Not as good as the previous Summer Games 1 and 2 (probably due to different developers), but still lots of fun.
