It's an ambitious take on an arcade RPG but it has a few too many problems to fully recommend. Presentation wise its excellent with excellent graphics and an easy to understand icon system accessed by a tap of the space bar. Forgetting to tap the space bar can end your game as you brutally murder the poor sod you are talking to though so take care. I have a few issues. Firstly the play screen is just too zoomed in. In a game with a huge map, only seeing a very small section of the map is a real pain. This is mitigated slightly by the inclusion of a map in the box but its still a problem. This may also have something to do with the second problem, its glacial pace. There is regular slowdown and you move at a very sluggish pace. Again, this can be mitigated by the purchase of a magical item but if you miss it the game is a real slog to get anywhere.
If you can see past the problems there is a big world to explore and quests to complete.

It's a very good game if you can put up with the slow down and general snails pace it runs at.

This game was just a superb glimpse of what is possible to be done on C64 in terms of coding, while making complex concepts as RPG game. Now just imagine if there was more this kind of skilled C64 coders working for RPG companies. This is complete rarity that hardcore arcade coders work for RPG developers.

Just played this for the first time. A lot of wandering... Get the Boots or the gameplay will take forever. Would have been nice to be able to trade and sell items. Very impressed that it was on just one disk.
8/10

For a long time the only game which came close to Zelda. 10/10.

Now, we also have Wonderland which was programmed for a 16K cartridge competition. A 64K version is on the way. I'm really looking forward to it. Check out the forum thread: lemon64.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=45369

Apparently the dragon isn't in the C64 version, but is in the Dos version. I've only payed the C64 version.

One of my fav games too!! :-)

One of my favourite games of all time, regardless of system(and I've owned a fair number over the years). A lot of fun, not overly hard, and a sense that it was the beginning of something larger. Alas, they never did make a sequel to this wonderful game.

I never did discover that dragon... ;)

I give this game 10/10!

A game for a really die hard fans of that kind of games. Similar to "Ultima" or "Lord of the Rings". In the moment of its premiere it was ahead of its time and had a great potential.

(Cassette Version) I found this game quite simple many years a go but it was my first real diversion from text adventures and was a game of great depth by comparison to the likes of Staff of Karnath.

Upon completing it I hunted high and low for it's match not liking the look of the Ultima series (how wrong I was about that!).

I loved this game.

Hey bbagnall, are you sure it isn't a clone of Faery Tale Adventure for the C64? lemon64.com/games/details.php?ID=3047&coverID=531

Very very nice rpg, without any loading when playing (amazing... I never understand how it was possible).
This was my favourite RPG, Ultima was too complicated to me (I was 12 hey !!).
The storyline was interesting, the subquest amazing, and the world so huge.
Definitivly one of the rare game I would be able to play again today... I think...

A nice 9/10 for this game who kept me unsleep for nights... Scrolling were awfull indeed...

Great fun, but definitively an RPG-lite. Excellent title music and graphics, though the scrolling was rather jerky.

I always thought it more like the Legend Of Zelda games on NES and SNES. It's fun to play and should keep you going for a while, though the graphics hurt my eyes after an hour or two - the colours are a little too bright.

Good for it's day, and quite a good effort at an RPG that could be put on C64 tape. It fades in comparison with Ultima and I completed it within a few days. Anyway it was good fun with a nice storyline. BTW there is one section that is quite similar to Guantlet towards the end.

Not to sound fruity or anything, but what the HELL is wrong with the guys ass (pictured in the second advert)?! I've heard of monkey ass and all but DAMN! - - - - As for the music, did anyone read what Martin said about how he used random sequencing and that the time was wasted because noone would play the song for 11 minutes? Think again! :)

This game reminds me of an earlier version of ultima 7: the black gate. The world is huge, the graphics are good, and the people have their own little lives going on. I cannot believe that you can wander around this huge world and never have the disk drive load up some new scenery for the 64k computer.

The sprite graphics seem to use sprite stacking which gives you more resolution.

Now this is a cool game. I bought it when it came out and I loved it. Couldn't stop playing it. Even my brother loved it. This is a must be in anyones collection. This game has a real depth in it. A cool story and real good gameplay. High on my list.

I thought it was one of the better rpg's. Shoot 'em up??? Must have been a long day for the reviewer. I liked how the npc's have seemed to have a life. They'd go home at night, do other things in the day. And the MUSIC, it was entralling.
Will 2003-08-12
One of C64's best games. The NES version is nearly identical, the only difference being the menu at the bottom of the screen disappears in NES. Find the boots in Treela first so it doesn't take too long to run around! This is the game that made me really love the C64.
Lemonope 2003-05-05
Shoot 'em up Gauntlet Style???! - Thats VERY Wrong! , this is more of a Ultima RPG type adventure with a lot nicer graphics and this game is quite good.
Vance Carson 2003-02-02
First of all, this is an experience like no other. Thats for starters. Second of all, the music is so grand that it transcends the artistic expression known as poetry. I spent many hours lying in my nid, listening to this title's opening theme song.
ocean ranger 2003-01-27
I watched my brother play this one for weeks. It gave you the freedom to wander the whole map through night and day, it gave a sense of a big world, yours to explore. All in all, an awesome game... Like all origin titles!
Haydn 2002-12-17
Not bad, it kept me interested in RPGs until I got onto the real thing (Ultima). The missions were interesting but plodding around gets tedious.
Capt Biggles 2002-10-06
Nice use of rumors in this one. Rumor of a dragon in the woods; searched and couldn't find it. Rumor of giant in the hills; thought "yeah, yeah". When the giant came on screen I jumped out of my chair
eloc 2002-05-18
This is a classic RPG. I remember getting at the same time as Pirates and couldn't decide which was the better. I spent hours on them both. The graphics were fantastic for the time and the size of the game was imense with several different missions to complete. A pearler!
Marko A, 2002-05-04
Chris Robert's classical arcade-RPG was one of my favourites on the C64. It also had one of Martin Galway's best tunes ever in the intro sequence and decent graphics throughout the game. It's also a remarkably large game - and definitely recommended!
Migill 2002-03-07
It has been one of my favourite adventure game !! And one that learned me some english...

Good plot, a huge world, a good music, and long game :)))
Skah T 2002-01-03
I remember this one primarily for the awesome intro music. It's very long an intricate.
