Every version of Space Harrier II, even the original Mega Drive/Genesis version, was reviewed rather roughly, perhaps because it wasn't as mind-blowingly psychedelic as it's predecessor. In my opinion, it's an awesome shooter on any platform, and one of my favorites.

It seems that I was confused with my experience with the arcade version of the ORIGINAL Space Harrier in my previous comment from 2010-06-13. This game never was a 'as a pure Arcade experience with the Hydraulic chair, Stereo Sound being blown into your ears', like ninelivecat and dogboy mentioned...

Apologies.

After I got used to how this game works & figured out how to deal with the quirks, I like it a lot, the in-game music is a real treat, too!

'The pure arcade experience with the hydraulic chair, stereo sound being blown into your ears' wasn't so great either.. I found Space Harrier II rather annoying in the arcade; there were much better playable Sega coin-swallowers available at the time.

I agree with Dogboy. Next time I want a few days off work, I'll sit down and play this crap for a few hours and induce a fit or two, or at the very least some mild nausea. I may be in the minority in believing the original C64 Space Harrier, without the stripey surface, was the best version, but on seeing this travesty, I can only state that the US version of SH manages to do the strobo-visual thing without harming the players eyesight too much.

Every bit as dull & flawed as Space Harrier, but with vomit inducing visuals.

Is that a good thing?

As someone already said here This was a pure Arcade experience with the Hydraulic chair, Stereo Sound being blown into your ears and it should have stayed there. The home computer versions where only tributes I always loved when the chair kicked into action and "Welcome To The Fantasy Zone, Get Ready ! " It was truely magical If you haven't played the full arcade simulated version You haven't played it There is always MAME but it's just not the same as the real thing Try and find one and see what I mean.

Hey! I've actually played this version of this game! Finally a newer game I have played. Personally, I thought that this version of this game was cool. Not a huge technology pusher mind you, but it was Space Harrier II, fun game and seems to be judged a little on the harsh side.

After the like it or leave it original 64 conversion of Space Harrier, here comes part II and lessons have not been learnt. Gone have the inventive chars used by Chris butler. We are back to normal slower sprites here. Shame as the US version of the original has become the definitive Space Harrier experience on the 64.

On the C64 Space Harrier II is a great game that beats hands down ALL the other versions (including the Megadrive's as well).
It is fast, very well drawn and realised and, above all, it is very playable and enjoyable.
Even the game soundtrack is by far the best version as all the others are just ridicolous and unmatching the action mood.
An excellent conversion of a game nobody needed at that time and easily forgettable on the other platforms and a very good shooter but ONLY on the CBM. Long live the 64!

Some games should really stay in the amusement arcade's. We all wanted it but when we got it we wondered why & realised it was something to do with that hydraulic chair that made it worth paying to play. Should have come with an epilepsy warning. Great if you wanted to give yourself a headache.
