I always thought this was over rated at the time and playing it again hasn't really changed my mind. Cannot complain about the Sound and Graphics as they are excellent across all the mini games. I just don't think there is enough here too keep you occupied for long. Worth playing for sure but don't expect long term fun.

As a kid of the 80s, I was into horror movies, heavy metal, ninjas and skateboards, therefore I loved this game, especially after watching the movie "Thrashin'", which seems to have inspired some parts of this game (especially the skate fight with the oars). I liked the mean punk characters too. The game played great and featured more than adequate graphics, plus it was quite varied.

In the 80s I had two obsessions- Skating and playing my C64 so of course I geeked out over Skate or Die.
Having played 720* and Skate Rock every week I was curious to check out the latest game on the market.
Right off the bat the presentation is great with some synthesised guitar riffs and detailed artwork that also conveyed the attitude of skating. My fave events were Half-pipe freestyle, Downhill Jam and the Jousting (two player)
Skate or Die is a fun game that has some variety and can be quite competitive when playing with a friend. For sure one of the best sports games on the commodore.

Yea, it's classic. Yes it's graphically impressive. Playability and repeatability weak. Skate games like 720 (US Gold version) and Skate Rock far blow away Skate or Die. SoD got the looks but games are meant for playing. Looks only go so far.. There's was a word for this. Poseur. Again it looks so good, but as one who skated and played these games, out of the 3 above, by far the least played. So MASSIVELY OVERRATED MIMICKING THE SAME MARKETING/HYPE FROM BACK-IN-THE-DAY BY NON-SKATERS. In fact I would say that most people are just rating on graphic appeal and didn't even skate or play skate games hardcore! Trueth! Love EA before they were sold-out post-Commodore era (and became poseurs on their own legacy themselves) but the actual gameplay is limited and unspectacular here - extremely weak events and play. Cool to have for the art and nostalgia collectible halfheartedly. Game has no soul.

There's just so much charm in this game, even if the individual events aren't all so hot.

To this day, this game pops up at our annual retro gaming championships (an ancient circle of friends), mostly the High Jump event. Years ago a friend set a 15'8" record, I stand at 15'6". Anyone seen better scores at High Jump?

One of the best skateboard sims of all time. In my opinion it can even rival with 'Tony Hawk's Pro Skater' on the first PlayStation...

Although a good package I found the sub-games pretty limited, Thinking if only they did this or that it would have been much improved.

A very unique game in its time. It's good on all formats really, but the C64 is the 'original' version. The NES version is derivative, for example - the graphics show that.

At any rate, the gameplay here is top notch, and there's something for everyone. You may not like all the events, but you will like some of them. A lot.

To this day I still randomly tell people "Secret path in downhill jam! "

Fantastic game, unbelievable soundtrack - and I refer here to the title tune AND in-game music. Unforgettable: The tongue-in-cheek seriousness of its content. This has got to be the only true CULT game created for the game Commie: Even today you may spot graffittis claiming: "SKATE OR DIE!!! "

Amazing game, really showed the graphic mussles of C64. Cool gameplay with many variants. Lastly amazing loader tune!

Unfortunaly the SID tune is corrupt, the tempo is too fast.

I just played again after 19 years and this game still holds up (where so many do not). It is surprising the amount of detail in this game. The controls, GFX, animations, music, fun factor, all top notch. The premise and timing of this game, groundbreaking at the time. 10/10

Such a well-polished game. The fellow with the purple mohawk (Rodney?) had different comments if you clicked on parts of him. Events chosen by skating around a menu screen. Different visual styles for different events. Smashing game.

Never saw what all the fuss was about over this. Had great colourful well defined GFX but that was it for me. :|

Definitley one of the better sports type games around. Good fun and felt like you were expressing yourself on the board not just going through a bunch of joystick moves.

Man, this game just reminded me that I went through about three skateboards when I was young. I think it all started after Back to the Future was released. Me and my friends cruised around the neighborhood on our skateboards and thought we were pretty cool. Now for some reason I look at kids on their skateboards and think they are wasting their lives. What happened to me?! Anyway, the intro music by Hubbard is incredible. Who knew the C64 could play such good music?

Move over Tony Hawk Pro Skater! This is the real deal. I love this game. Truly one of the best games on the C64. I remember when I used to invite a lot of friends over to play this game. It kept us occupied for hours. The graphics are great, even to this day - I love all the nice detailed touches. The gameplay is varied and clever. I especially love the part where the two punks race against each other. A classic above most of the games on the C64.

A true 10/10

HAHA the guy who played the guitar solo in his car!! Well I love the intro, it can bring a tear to my eye it is so beautifully done - the BITCHIN' opening music, the blinking lights and the frame changing patterns according to the music. If the intro's so good, you'd bet the game is too, and it is. Lots of fun esp. With several players. Lester is a toughy in the joust but once you figure out a pattern you shouldn't have much of a problem. Awesome game, gets a solid A in my book.

This has to be the greatest sports game! I bought it long ago and play it so much. Bash your enemies!
IPAndrews 2004-06-16
Took an age to load from tape but was well worth the effort when it did. A great game to play with friends.
Jungle Ninja 2004-06-10
One my favourites too. I remember when I bought the game and first played it. Cool!

Skate or die! Surely one of my all-time favourites.
nat 2004-05-04
I was a skater at the time and absolutely loved this game. If it rained everybody used to come over my house and we'd have a tournament. Too much fun. Its a ten in my book. Cab on the cover, too. Once of the C64's highlights.
John Keels 2004-03-26
Fun Skating game for the 64. I was not too good at it as I recall but enjoyed playing nonetheless. Graphics and game play were OK.
Ahmad 2004-03-06
I remember that time when me and my brother played this game, we were fighting out for a victory and beating the record. Quite franklie he was too good for me since then When I first played this, I had few problems on some events. The one's I have problems with is freestyle, downhill & downhill race, but the others are OK for me, I just need more practice for this events. Nice graphic, music and sounds are great too.
g64 2003-12-16
This was one of my absolute favourite games on the 64! Countless hours playing this. I remember I could do ALL the tricks in the ramp! :-D
Shunichiro 2003-10-21
I recently found out this game thanks to the wonders of emulation. I can honestly say I prefer this to the modern extravaganza of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series on next-gen consoles. Really. Surprisingly varied gameplay and all you need is one button and joystick
directions. If only modern gamemakers would understand what IS playability. But no. Sigh.
Luckily we have all these old classics.
Phut 2003-09-10
Absolutely kick ass! From the moment the rocking title track opens the game, me and my gaming buddies were hooked. Felt like there weren't enough events available, but what there was had so much depth. For me, it was one of the 64's truly great moments.
nazz 2003-08-16
I remember hours and hours of gameplay with friends, and I don't even like skating! This was awesome. I was unmatched in Joust mode!

Great game, will never forget it!
Lazyjones 2003-08-10
I just want to say: this game is awesome !!

Excellent Game, My best multi-sports game ever. The title music followed by the stunning graphics are awesome!

Narley, The best skateboarding C64 game to come. You can go contests or just go free skate. What is it going to be Skate or Die
HG 2003-02-25
Simply said: a masterpiece and a classic which taught me that not all sports games are crap. Tony Hawk of the 80's.
ilikemyoldc64 2003-02-04
LOVED this game! Great music, several different skating events to compete in - it was just so much fun. I remember being in HIGH SCHOOL just waiting to run home and play this for hours until dinner. And then, I'd play it again! One of my top 10.
TheLargeProfessor 2003-02-04
Perfect GAME
TWR 2003-01-17
The 720 degress game was more fun, but this one has got better graphics and music.
Itekei 2003-01-09
Awesome game. Back in the days when Skate or Die came out we were all little Skaters, dreaming of Vans and Airwalk shoes, skating in a pipe someday and stuff like that. Everywhere we went, we went by board. So, Skate or Die was a must-have title for us and it rocked. Great action, graphics and sound !
Andyman 2002-11-05
Ah the memories... Plugging in an Atari trackball, and using it to get half-pipe high jumps way off the screen... Skating thru the fence and falling to pieces... Classic.
DJ Twist 2002-10-07
Back in the day I used to spend hours in the halfpipe trying to get a higher and higher score - The learning curve is a little steep at times, but it's addicting. I think I played this more than any other game
Eminam 2002-09-10
This just as good as Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3!!! With all of that cop car jumping to tearing up a pool. I know why it's a hit.
Wombombs 2002-08-15
Great Soundtrack, Great Events! Great Graphics, Great Animayion. This is one Sports Game u will never forget! Score: 9/10

MAN... I actually recorded the beginning guitar solo in my car, and my friends were like... "MAN... WHO IS THIS... ???" , " MAN THIS IS THE SHIT... WHAT IS THIS.. ?".. Dude... Its my skate or die game... FREAKIN PRICLESS

Excellent two-player game. Cool music. Download now! Spent lots of time playing this one with my best friend.
c64 freak 2002-01-27
A great game for two players.
Worth downloading for the music, amazing
digitised music for the time, listen to that SID chip sing!!
Mal4242 2002-01-21
While a great sports game, this one was just too tough. After awhile I could never progress any further and it was very frustrating. The swimming pool joust was hilarious and about the funnest thing about this game. Tony Hawk circa 1987
