Robocop (PAL) has been fully fixed and improoved.
c64.cz/index.php?detailhry=6310
This one is the first fully working PAL version ever released, by me :-)
The original PAL version from 1988 released by OCEAN was corrupted, but the original NTSC disk version by OCEAN was working well too (of course without trainers).

The 5th level is very hard but not impossible. I have beat it several times and uploaded a video showing how to do it.
The 6th level works fine (the fight with ED-209) so it makes no sense they made the 5th level "impossible" on purpose as there was another finished level to play. I guess they just made a mistake with the tape mastering or something which messed 7th level.

I was firstly impressed by the good music and graphics at first sight of this game that I rated it 8. But after I reached the 5th level climbing the stairs I realized that the game is impossible to finish as the time limit is too short. And reading the comments I understand why: the game was released incomplete. It's a shame! So I change my vote to 6.

I remember playing this on a friend's Spectrum and being quite impressed. The C64 version was brutal though. Great visuals and sound, but an absolute grind. Would have made a great coin op. Later found out about the pixel mash level. I bet they didn't even bother to chop that out in the budget release, the fucking cheapskates!

Great graphics with hi-res sprites, excellent soundtrack, slick presentation. The game was too hard though and it was baffling to find out it was designed like that to prevent you from reaching a level that was bugged/unfinished! What an absolute rip-off. I think there are versions where the bugs are fixed these days, but I never completed it anyway. The main titles with the "depressive" entries in the hi-score were really weird, especially with that melancholic music theme. The guy who programmed that must have been in a rough shape in those days.

A friend and me somehow got into the cinema and watched Robocar and were blown away, it remains firmly in my top 10 best films today. I think I saw the arcade sometime later and loved it but it wasn't until I got this on cartridge (I think) that I became obsessed. This game had excellent music by Jonathan Dunn and some pretty accurate sprites (within reason) for the C64.
We played it for weeks but could not complete warehouse stage which we thought was due to a stupid time limit.
Years later I learn the developers didn't build the game any further thus due to deadlines they released an unfinished game with the time limit lowered to make it impossible to get past warehouse stage.
It's funny to me this happened but wish I got to finish the whole game.
5/10

Fun game, until the bugged Warehouse level. Yes there are patched versions out there, which I would probably give a 7 to, but I can't get past unplayability for the released product.

Good graphics, great music, but the gameplay could be better. It gets too hard on latter levels, you ale completely helpless while going up/down the stairs.

I can't remember if I played this on the C64 or the Amiga. I put some time into it, not much, and won it. Would go back every once in a while when the mood hit me to replay it. Not a bad little game, through not fantastic either. Fun.

OK, after 20 years I was able to complete the warehouse in the original (bugged) version. I mean, the one with only 3 minutes time limit. It's a matter of forcing the powerups to appear always in convenient places (you need to get the 3 bottles to survive). Also, the three-way shot is crucial in the middle section. Anyway you'll need lots of luck with the enemy spawning. The hardest part is the final descent in the top right. You need to stop in the middle of stairs to force the enemy spawn, go back upstairs and kill them. The final challenge is an enemy spawning in the last door just as you pass... YOu need to stop just some pixels before. In the end you need about 15 seconds to break the doors and exit. Good luck... It's extremely hard but possible!

This is an interesting game. Great Good music, some "Speech" quotes, and nice graphics, but too hard.
The SFX mode are poor.

Played this game tonight on he ccs64 emulator, I know a lot of people have been stuck on the warehouse, drug factory level, as not enough time, but found you can get to the next level by keeping to the bottom floor, and when you get to the bolted girder, go up to it and keep hitting down and across quickly, so Robo keeps crouching pointing his gun, (looks like he's having a fit) he should glitch ie his helmet visor loose colour some graphic discolour, then walk, he should pass through the girder, keep doing this tell you get to the end, then press fire to punch a couple of thin girders and walk to the end, fight ED209 on the next level and on to the glitchy level which you cannot complete cos of some time bug, arrrgh,
check out csdb.dk/ for some great C64 game cracks and info. Hope this helps all, all the best, HAPPY AND MERRY CHRISTMAS. :D

Looked and sounded nice, but was a dog to play. I think it was deliberately tough to cover up the fact that the game wasn't finished. The Spectrum version was way better, and I actually preferred the ZX arrangement of the in-game tune as well (C64 title tune was better though). Oh, and the Ariston advert featured the theme from the Gameboy version of this game, fact fans. 5/10

Very nice game.
Very smart looking also (compare this to the mess that was Robocop 2)

Only gripe was that the enemies were coloured in a way that they blended too much in the background.

One of the first games I ever played back in the day. I think this game deserves to be ranked as one of the best 64 games of all time. The music is superb - introduction as well as level SIDs are very nice.

Level design is above average. Gameplay is very good although very difficult. Always baffled me why Robocop is near-indestructible in the films - yet in the game a few bullets could kill him!?

Regardless still a great game - shame about the bug on the last level though :(

Anyways I will give this awesome game a 8/10

I was obsessed about the movie at the time so I really loved this game. Shame about the crashed section after the drugs factory. Still, the backdrops were stunning, almost like a comic book. The in-game music sounded like New Order.

This version is audio visually stunning, but as a game it it definitely not a 10/10 product. Yes, the soundtrack sweeps the floor even with that nerdy Amiga phone-line sampletracker rubbish (as usual), yes the sprites are hi-res. But the gameplay is simply not there. I've had much more fun with ZX Spectrum's Robocop in b&w favour. Sorry, 7/10 maximum.

I change my initial score of 10 to 7 because the released game had many serious bugs that I didn't remember. I continue loving his atmosphere and feeling but, that mentioned is unforgivable. Not really a true classic, I was moved by nostalgia in my previous commentary. :nerd: Now -years later- I'm being more objective.

Such clear and defined graphics, such wonderful music, and then the difficulty... Some 1337 hacker would do a lot of people a great favour by releasing a _playable_ version of this with selectable difficulty-level (enemy response-time) easy/medium/hard, with more time on level 2, fixed bugs, and especially reconstruction of the graphics from the garbage in one of the later levels - some data may still be in the memory...

I remember playing the demo and loving it. I think I ended up getting the full game for christmas but was disappointed. The game is too hard. Just had a go recently and after a few tries managed to get past the first level. Couldn't kill the man on the second level though. They could have at least given you a few lives or something!

Someone started a thread in the forum on how good the title music is (SID file tune 1), and rightly so. It's better than the soundtrack they actually used in the movie. Considering that all comments below refer to the soundtrack one way or the other, it's fair to say that this alone qualifies this game as a classic.

Lovely graphics, brilliant soundtrack, but the difficulty level could be seriously off-putting to ham-fisted gamers like myself. Faitly addictive actually, but it could have been a little less merciless.

A classic! I love this game. Specially c64 version. It has superb graphics (look loading screen), superb music theme, nice sfx, robocop is slow, yes!! But it is too slow in the movie! Not a problem. Good conversion from a superb arcade game and from a great classic film too. It was the first synthetized human -robotic- voice (saying "robocop! ";) i ever listened on my c64, what a surprise! . 10/10. Good work here, ocean.

Love the movie, the game is very pretty and has great sound, but the gameplay isn't so good. Obviously, you can't beat the drug factory without cheating. And why can't Robo kill people in one shot? It also gets tedious walking in a straight line forever. Watching the Longplay for this though was quite awesome! There's a good game in here, somewhere.

Come on guys, I give you a hint why you loved this game: it was the perfect complement to the movie. In fact I captured the atmoosphere so good that you got interested in getting a copy of the film if you got to know the game first. Just look at the memorable entries in the high-score list while the theme music play. So that makes 7, 5 for the game (which was good) plus one for the atmosphere, cheers.

Yeah, I remember this nostalgic tune - the most excellent title music I've ever heard. Jonathan Dunn did a great job. Graphics were nice, To bad the gameplay was a bit straight and had no deeper sense, but It's hard to say that this game wasn't addictive :) 7/10 for me. And I liked the movie to, it's a s-f classic...

The Robocop title music is one of my most favourite videogame music. I have a story behind this music for you. What you might not know, is in the UK, we had an advert in the early 90s of a product called "Arizon", which had music very similar to the title music. A man was is talking with the music(not really singing he was) is saying "and on, and on, and on, and on and arizon", which is saying that the deoderant odour is lasting. It could be a French-made product.

Anyway, I disagree with the review, it is harsh on the overall mark. I thought the graphics and gameplay were Ok (I would give it 6/10 overall) It was a bearable game to play, but I do agree it was damn hard. Oh, and I also loved the music when Robocop dies. Like the movie too.

My older brother copied all C64 games, we only bought a few such as the living daylights, comics, & miami vice. For some strange reason, the copy of Robocop we owned, Robocop was invincible, no matter how many times he was shot, nothing happened. Sadly, I got stuck at the drug factory because I had no idea where to go so the game ended there. Any1 else have this invincibility gift??

The game is unplayable.
the factory isn't possible in that timelimit but if you use the "walking thru the wall" bug. After the fight with the ED209 the gamegraphics crush complete. I've tryed many versions on the C64 and now the original tape image for vice. All versions have the same error.

There are a few titles I've held off on commenting on, mainly because everyone's covered the general feeling of it, and I don't feel I'd be adding anything startling to the list of opinions. But I'm bored at work, so here goes: Surviving in Robocop is harder than licking your own elbow. Still, despite its nutsoid difficulty level, it somehow retains the one-more-go element for longer than it maybe deserves.
Ace graphics and a memory of playing this at my cousins' house also give it a more cherished place in my heart that it should. But you have been warned (by everyone) that it's a bugger to play.

Granted the game may not be that great, but the music alone makes it worthwild.

Difficult... Yes, but it was still playable. The interesting thing was, that after having played this for awile, I bout another C64 from a guy who had and AMIGA. When he loaded up Robocop on it all I could say was Daaaaaaam!

Still I'm gonna give 'ol Robo here a 7, mostly for the music...

The best looking of all the Robocop games in C64. The main sprite looks really well done, the the backdrop on level 1 was way ahead for the time. Great loading screen too and some good music. The was way too hard to play though.

Why was it much easier to beat ED-209 on the Amstrad version? I suspect the reason is that on the level after ED on the 64, everything was screwed up! After hours and hours of playing, I finally managed to stuff ED, but my joy over completing this task was shat on as I discovered that on the following level, only the elevators and baddies were normal. Everything else was all fucked up. Was it just my version of the game or did this occur on all tapes and disks. I had the original, so I suspect Ocean not wanting to, or having the time to correct their failure, and instead beef up the difficulty on ED.
Ahmad 2004-03-06
I find this game really hard to play. I don't have #2 & #3, but the one I have on my Amiga which is #2, but it's a lot different than the one on C64, the one on the Amiga #2, is much better.

In the old days some games used to be merciless and this is one of them. Can you say bloody hard? I bought the game and after all the playing I remember reaching only level two! Nice graphics and everything but... Merciless.
David 2003-07-31
Good graphics, sound and music but although I normally don't like Spectrum games, I prefered the gameplay on the Spectrum version compared to this C64 version. This version was too hard, even getting past the first level is near impossible. And you only have one life. Woul'dve been better if it where a bit easier and with more lives. Still a good game though.
Cadaver 2003-07-24
Truly nice graphics, music, scrollroutine, character-based bullets routine & sprite-multiplexer. :) Too bad the game itself is much too hard & repetitive.

This game was hard as hell, but it didn't help that it wasn't clear as to how you were supposed to clear certain boards (I had to write Data East for help :: laugh ::).
