Good game? Probably... But I struggled to get past the first level. Did it once or twice but then didn't last long on the second level. Still some good memories though.

One of the better movie-tie games but the levels are a little variable on the quality and difficulty front. The tunnel level still impresses and the game represents a good challenge overall. An excellent soundtrack too.

Another Ocean game where the difficulty is Sky High, which is a shame as this is one of the better tie-ins. Two large maze games, a trite single screen shooter and a harder than diamond Gryzor knock off to finish. Graphics are good throughout although the tunnel section deserves particular praise.

Platoon is one of the better movie tie-ins you can play on the commodore, decent sprites and some quality tunes.
There are small issues regarding the level design and difficulty however with a bit of practice and some patience you will be okay.

Best movie licensed game on the C64?
I’m not sure, as there as so many contenders. But damn if it’s not close!
Really solid game for sure.

Good grief this game was hard. I don't think I ever got past the tunnels back in the day.

I used to love this one back in the day. It was tough and unforgiving, and required lightning quick reflexes. The atmosphere of the game is spot on, especially in the tunnel sequence. Soundtrack is brilliant as well.

Disappointing. The tunnel sequence is not bad but the rest is just weak. The graphics are passable and the music is good but proper sound effects would have been better for atmosphere.
Beach Head II showed how to do this type of game properly. For example, in Platoon the MG dugout part is a simple reflex point and shoot without any of the subtleties (and fun) of the equivalent in BH2. Ocean should've kept the movie licence money and paid for one more coder, it would have been a better game.
After all, history belongs to everbody, no need to pay for a movie title. But then, that's what happens when you let marketing bs impose itself.

The presentation of this game is faultless which includes the music. The gameplay is tough but excellent and varied enough to keep you engaged throughout

Awesome, awesome, awesome. Best Movie conversion for the C64. Graphics and music/sound is superb. Would have given it a 10 but I never really liked the last section of the game. So I stick with a 9/10.

I wish there were more shooters based on this game's underground level. Like a Doom conversion for example. The actual Doom clones suck really bad.

Never made it past the first level. Just got lost in that damned jungle maze. Looked and sounded great though.

I bought a new copy of this on eBay a few months ago, but the disk had some oxidation damage and refused to read (packaging is pristine though). But today, my favorite retro game store (Game Over) had a box of C64 disks including this one for a buck! Haven't tried it yet, but looking forward to giving it a go. Remember the first level being impossibly difficult as a kid.

A great movie tie in game. The loader surprised me this time. No Ocean Loader V3 theme was used this time round, but the Platoon title music was used instead.

Immersive experience: a good piece of work even if it's really difficult. Awesome on the 2nd level labirynths, soundtracks like no other.

I agree with the last comment. This game is incredible, but the last stage pissed me off to no end - I never actually finished it, even when I replayed it on emulators :(

Took me 2 month to do the first level. Had it been another game it would have gone in the bin or ended up getting swapped:but not this. This game is special in every way. It is pure quality from the music to the variety in it's gameplay. I see some people did not rate this game. I guess those critics never made it off the first level. Oh when you reach that tunnel it is amazing, so much fun. I never wanted to leave the tunnel, I wanted to just stay there it was boss! When I talk of this game it is hard to believe I'm talking of someting from the 80's. Only downloaded the emulator for this and Last Ninja 2. Never completed it(guess its the mark of a good game) could never get past the part with the compass where you try to find your way out, but had great fun trying. Fantastic 10/10 for sure!

A rare breed: a really great movie tie in! Great GFX and a touching title track made this a corker of a game with loads of atmosphere and genuinely tense moments! The variety in levels is always a nice touch. Those guys that jumped out the water in the tunnels were so realistic!

Such a good game as it might be, in my opinion it does not deserve a 10...

This game even made it to PC. Still the C64 version is the superior version - it's even better then the Amiga version (smoother graphics and sidescrolling).

This is yet another classic in my book. I remember I thought it was bloody hard to even finish the first level, but boy, was it rewarding when you actually made it to the following levels. The tunnel level is absolutely brilliant! Fantastic music by Jonathan Dunn as well. The movie is also among my all time favourites. 8/10

THis game is good and it's all been said previously in terms of praise. I would urge anyone interested in the Vietnam theme to read The 13th Valley by John M. Del Vecchio. A brilliant novel which I'm sure inspired Stone et al in their quest to make a great 'Nam film.
m. perriman 2004-05-18
This was the game that changed the way I looked at video games for ever. It was 10-26-88 when I first played this game & I remember it like it was yesterday.

I remember after the game loaded, the music came on and it had this sad type of feeling like pain & for the 1st time for a video game, I actually could feel the pain in the intro music... Then when I started the game, it was amazing. The music had this action mood that put me into the game. In fact all the songs in this game are good & the soundtrack to this game is one of the best I've ever heard in a c-64 game. All the music in the game fits each level.

One extra foot note about level one: you can also play level one with the intro song by starting the game, & then quickly turn off the music for one or two seconds, then turn the music back on & it will now be the intro sad music while playing level 1.

The graphics, well done. As in the Commodore 64 days, Data East always made good games

I bought this game for my Nintendo also, it does NOT have the same effect that the C-64 version had on me. In fact this version to me has better graphics than the Nintendo version & the music is also better. Also one more foot note comparing this version & the Nintendo version is that this version has more songs.

Platoon C-64 version, one of the BEST Commodore 64 games of all time

Great game! Music, sounds, graphics, atmosphere... Creepy, exciting... Great game, still now!
John Keels 2004-03-26
Very good game for the 64! I played this one endlessly. At first I didn't think it would be a good idea to have a game based on this particular movie but I was wrong.
master Sly 2004-03-12
Platoon is my all time favourite C64 game along with fist 2. It has the BEST soundtrack of all games and the graphics are absolutely superb. All the Missions was very well designed and not so hard I must say (except the final level) . The C64 version is the best of all others. C64 was the king of all computers those days .
andy vaisey 2004-03-03
A really good Ocean licence! Good atmosphere and playability all round. The trip-wires were annoying thought... Maybe I should get my eyes tested?
El Swocko's 2003-10-19
This game is and awesome and when I say that I mean totally sweet.
Shunichiro 2003-10-18
To make a powerful drama movie into an action game? Ocean' big shots must have thought a simple formula: the movie got war in it so you can make a game out of it. A stupid idea indeed if the game wasn't so sweet. Excellent graphics, atmospheric music (especially when you trick the game to play the brilliant title tune in the first level) and good variety in gameplay. Difficult to finish but not impossible. I remember doing it at least once. The last level felt a bit rushed compared to the rest of the game but nevertheless, this is one of the best licence games ever and has stood the test of time incredibly well.
earpgor 2003-08-01
'in the sewers' - section is the best!
bartosy 2003-07-11
... OK this game was hard no doubts there... U had to have eyes in ur back to see all those gooks jumping on ur screen... Not to mention the 100s of traps.. I wonder or anyone has completed this game fair.. I've my doubts there though
Gilo 2003-06-16
Trip wire? What trip wire!? I fought in The Nam, and this game was spot on. I got me 57 certified kills in the central highlands, but the satisfaction of killing gooks was nowhere near as good as the satisfaction at completing this masterpiece of a game. The soundtrack of all soundtracks to boot. OK, OK CAPT. I'll sweep the village after I've planted the explosives...
R.S.S. 2003-05-22
I couldn't even complete the first level, so I havn't given this a score, but it was pretty good (what I saw of it was anyway!)
Cadaver 2003-03-26
Excellent game, with excellent atmosphere (mainly aided by the music). The tunnel section almost belongs to horror genre :) Though I feel that the overall polish of the graphics/gameplay deteriorates toward the end, the first level seems most thought out.
TWR 2003-03-03
One of the best licences. Superb graphics and sound and excellent game-play. The opening picture is beutiful.
spaceship789 2003-03-01
The tunnel system wasn't so hard, - you just had to map it, and then only visit the crucial rooms. But the level after that, running down endless alleys of machine gun fire - now THAT was difficult!
Trautman 2003-02-28
The music was great in this game, and the "intro" with Elias was also great. I remember the box containing two tapes; one with the game and one with a soundtrack. The action was good, but I must say that the game was a little to difficult when you entered the tunnel system. 8/10.
Skippy 2003-01-17
Now THIS was a game. A movie license that wasn't a platform shoot-em-up, by Christ. The music was simply fantastic, and made for much of the game's atmosphere. A lot of people never saw past the first level, but they missed out on the superb first-person tunnel section, which was way ahead of its time. The final level let the game down slightly but didn't spoil one of the best games (aesthetically and atmospherically) the machine has to offer.
Spaz 2003-01-12
You're hit, get going!
Rami 2002-10-12
It's impossible to describe the feeling when I found THE BRIDGE and THE VILLAGE. It still gives me the chills. My friend used to sing "deodorant-e, de-o-dorant-e-e" along with the jungle theme. He was just plain stupid... But the game and the music was excellent!
Paul 2002-08-17
A very addictive gaming experience. Gameplay was varied and contained a lot of tension and drama. The music in the tunnel level is simply amazing. Tough but challenging.
dr&quinch 2002-07-25
A rare good film license game, with loads of bits from the film faithfully recreated, especially liked the tunnel rat section, very atmospheric
Shane 2002-06-28
Very atmospheric game. Tense action with music that creates sense of fear. One of the best film licenses around on the C64.
Matte 2002-02-05
Absolutely amazing game, damn hard but incredible rewarding.
Adam 2002-01-06
Never really got far in this game but loved it all the same. Some of the screen shots on the back of the box for later levels looked amazing!! A MUST download...
