Not *entirely* sure about that genre. Like the other C64 Konami/Ultra Games ports, such as Castlevania and TMNT, it's unpolished to the point of being almost unplayable.

It seems like a decent port of the NES version. Pretty much on par with Castlevania on the C64. Judging it by itself, it is not very fun to play. The Angry Nerd explains why:

Awful port of a poor port of a great game, very slow and based on the NES version which was not liked by the designer. Locations were changed, boss fights were changed or not there at all, you fight a super computer at the end instead of actually blowing up the metal gear. Colours were darker in the original, and the enemies more interesting. Excellent blend of action and adventure with survival elements.

Like walking through treacle. How can anyone play this? A flick screen game where you have to wait for each screen to load? Piss off!! :x  xI

I had no idea this existed, but yes, the MSX versions of Metal Gear are actually better.
It would have been nice if this port was actually the MSX version rather than the NES port.

Then again, nothing can beat "I FEEL ASLEEP! "

To end this... Msx version is the best. If you should play this game, play it on the Msx. And a tip for you all. Try Metalgear 2 solid snake for... MSX. Its a lot better than any PS2 game!!!

Like castlevania this is konami game ported from NES to the 64(it was here first it should get the shorter abriviation) Which means it is like the NES version but with slightly dulled edges, not a bad game though, much better than any of it's sequal. (anyone saying playstation 2 sequals are better should remember 2 things: one Atari was allowing lots of really really bad games out befor the crash in 84, and today sony is doing the exact same thing, and at the time people thought Atari was unstopable)

The original Metal Gear was for MSX2, not NES, and what I've heard its way better than NES version (Hideo Kojima didn't even have anything to do with NES version. ) Got my MSX2 version of the game yesterday - didn't know they had one for C64 too. Sweet, gotta try to find it as well :)

Anyone gay enough to post a comparison of PS2 vs C64 probably doesn't really need to be here. Without systems like the C64 the PS2 would never exist. I bet a lot of you don't even remember a serious video game crisis that resulted in Atari throwing in the towel and saying the gaming industry is dead until the famicom was released and Nintendo here in America. It wasn't until that success that Atari decided to release the 7800 and more developers took gaming more seriously. Systems such as the C64, Atari, and NES put serious home gaming on the map. Maybe while you're playing your PS2 you should consider these things :P

Although I'm a die-hard fan of the C=64, I must say that the NES original was far better than this. I've only played it on emulator, but with the loading after each screen, the action was just too slow. The Nintendo version was damn hard though... No trainer- drat!

The PS2 is crap, let's face it. Any C64 game is 1000 times more playable than ANY PS2 game ever made.

Not as good as metal gear 2 substance on ps2

Solid snake had to start somewhere!

The C64 conversion of Metal Gear isn't as polished as, say, the NES, but it is very faithful and a good play.
