Hunchback was one of the my earliest memories of gaming, well not precisely Hunchback and more Punchy on the ZX Spectrum which is a clone of this very game. And this is quite a nice version actually, very simple and effective but it is pixel perfect particularly with the landing and I never got on with that. I think the Spectrum version of Hunchback had the same issue and caused me not to like it so much, particularly compared to Punchy, but this version I got on with quite well even if the pixel perfect landing still exists and is still an annoyance.

An absolute classic! It's fun, tense, and will test your joystick skills like no other game. Play a few games and that tune will be imprinted into your mind for all time.

One of the first games I ever played on my C128 and it remained in fond memory. Limited and simple but ultimately really fun.

Solid platformer. Not as hard as a "Ghosts and Goblins" and with a bit of practice you can generally get through.

A fun and addictive little Pitfall variant.

Generally looks and feels like a good conversion, but the inclusion of deadly random projectiles at the start and end of key screens is idiotic enough to make you wonder if it was co-written by Quasimodo himself. ***

Not a bad one, being the first arcade conversion of Ocean. This game originally was designed to be Robin Hood, but the developers though the sprite was like a hunchback, an then this game was born, instead of Robin hood :D isn't it funny? Look at the main sprite, is still green. And all this archers and arrows around... It is a nice little game.

Yet another C64 classic that I played to death, easy to get into, simple yet effective graphics and high replay value, this is a game you will come back to many times, at least I did. It's because of addictive titles like this why the C64 quickly became THE home gaming micro of the 80s. 9/10.

This was the first game I played on the C64. It was packed together with the computer itself. Yes, it's a great, very addictive game.

Simplistic, yet fun and challenging. It's not a pretty or polished game but I recommend it!

Simple but yet somewhat addictive game where timing is everything. Nice and simple game from Ocean :)

This was 1983, what do folk expect? Try to rate it for the time and not coz you played it on an emulator last week! Anyway, this was great fun and some of the jumps were hilarious, or so me and my bro thought. Got quite a challenge later on but just had to try and reach Esmarelda and get as much Bell bonuses! :zombie:

Ahhh you heathen (tongue-in-cheek remark) :P

it may or may not be your sorta game style but it's a classic. I remember being goggle-eyed on the Vic20 version back then.

so wot if the graphics etc ain't that great, the gameplay still was for many.

the only thing that slightly spoils it for me is that it didn't have the in-tower levels which was saved for Hunchback II.

actually I'm not sure how many in-tower levels the arcade version has, I know there's at least one.

This was the beginning of my "gaming career" back then in hungary (communism!) as a kid. I don't know why but at the place where my dad worked had a C64 and this was one of the games on it. Loved it when I was 5 or something. My life would prolly have taken different tunrs if didn't grow up getting a computer geek ;)

Poor graphics, poor sounds, but it makes fun. A nice platform game with a moderate difficulty.

Simple and fun arcade platforming which was very addictive at the time, and still worth a go today.

I just loved Hunchback, very addicitive, I never got to complete the game because my cousin sold it on me. It was great fun wondering whether or not you're going to get an arrow up the arse because of a mistimed jump. My Dad used to love playing it with me. I can remember the theme 'Teddy Bears Picnic' playing as Quasimodo was walking along the castle. A CLASSIC!!!

Those were the days my friend, I thought they'd never end...
Hunchback is a classic. It looks easy peasy but it aint.
Simple yet extremely annoying gameplay with hilariously bad sound effects.
If released nowadays this game would have to be called Physically Challenged Frenchman or sommat like that. Anyway, good game, good laugh and yes, joysticks were smashed on the floor 'coz of this one.
Steve Perry 2004-02-08
21 years on and this game is as addictive as ever, and is an example of how you don't need great music and tremendous graphics to have a hit on your hands. Back in those days gameplay was what mattered and Hunchback had it in spades. There was some luck involved in the game; you didn't know whether the arrows were going to come from above or along the ground and this added to the challenge. As one of he first games I ever played (when I was 5!), Hunchback rates as one of the most original and credit has to be awarded to the makers of seminal games such as this.
faraz 2003-10-26
Very addictive. It took great patience, but eventually I finished it and didn't play it after that. I hated getting shot in the butt with those arrows that came from the left!
david 2003-08-24
This game drove me mad! I snapped at least 2 joysticks in frustration! I got through the game twice, the second time without losing a life!
What an addictive game, it was brill!!!
Brutal Deluxe 2000 2003-07-21
Absolute C64 classic!!! Another TWR's idiot comment...
SRRAE 2003-06-09
I loved this game. I always got to the end but didn't know what to do as there was a brick wall infront of the last hole you had to jump. I jumped it but ended up always missing.
Boring graphics, simple music, but I kept coming back for more.
DeAdLy_cOoKiE 2003-04-13
A classic.
TWR 2003-03-24
A very bad done game. Poor graphics, irritating sound and slow game-play. ALL other hunchback games are an improvement...
Kusarigama 2003-03-10
I've always thought the C64 version is even better then the arcade
ian 2002-12-24
I remember the front cover had in print "100% machine code". That phrase always intrigued me
blagge 2002-10-19
It must be love. Unbelievable simple, repetitive, crap music and sound and bad graphics. Still, I played this time and time again, even after I finished the first round. Lovely.
dumbflag 2002-08-15
A classic pure and simple. I remember the video store in the town I lived had the coin-op. Never seen one since. A very simple jumping game, but at the time it was unbelievably popular and deservedly so. Run and jump along to save the chick stuck in a tiny hut!
Piro 2002-08-04
One of the firsts. One of the most played. One of the first and most re-played! SO romantic...
fishdune 2002-04-08
This game is alrights :D
Cheeley 2002-03-06
I think that this was one of, if not THE, first game that I had on tape. I remember me and my friends screaming 'JACKSIE! ' when the hunchback got speared, and finding it hugely amusing. Well, I was 10 at the time..
Jägermeister Markus 2002-02-26
Yeah! This one rocks! The gameplay beats much of modern software and for 1983 this game is really one of the best!
SmartFart 2002-02-20
My very 1st computer game ever. It's so cool to play it again after 18 years. Go Hunchey Go !!!
