Managed to complete it despite how difficult it was ...

I think this still is a very good copy of the arcade.
Then I read the one below it, and yeah, it never fails, the same garbage, stupidity-filled nonesense...
Green Beret rules!
As far as dybdal's whining; I am the first to complain about difficulty in games - most classics are too difficult for me, so I can only enjoy the atmosphere and graphics+sound, but not the gameplay, really.
Still, Green Beret is not -that- hard, and anyone should be able to complete at least the first level.
The difficulty is not the problem per se - heck, I completed two levels without cheats (well, almost - I died right at the end of the second level).
The problem is repetitiveness - but what can you expect from a game made in 1986 AD?
This game is a magnificent classic from the eighties with an incredible Galway Masterpiece as the title music that really makes the soul glad to exist.
Green Beret belongs to everyone's Commodore 64 game collection, even if they only have two games in it (the other one would of course be Maniac Mansion, the best computer/video game ever created that I know of).
And it's probably the best arcade conversion after Bomb Jack, Kung-Fu Master and Midnight Resistance.
It's a lot harder than the arcade version, allmost unplayable at times.
1) The Enemy's move to fast
2) The Bullet's move to fast
3) There isnt a seperate sprite for the enemys that can shoot, so you never know if the enemy thats chasing you is going to shoot you or not.
4) The animation delay of the enemys shooting is missing, in the arcade version the shooting enemys will sit down and take abit of delay before shooting you, in the C64 version they just sit down and shoot instantly, meaning if an enemy decides to do this a few pixels away from you.. Your left with this unfair feeling and that is never a good thing.
A solid game on the arcade, zx spectrum & nes. Would be the same on the C64 if the gameplay issues were ironed out.
What a pity.
I played this game for AGES during my adolescence.
It's still one of my fav titles on the 64.
The random shooting from the blue dudes was a real nightmare... The bullet was very fast, and they tend to shoot you when the distance was too short to avoid it.
The only con I find about this title is having lives lost when your character grounds on the face of some enemy after a jump.
I don't think anybody could stand a kick like that. But well, that would require to change all the gameplay...
No need to change.
But returning to it many years later, I bought an original on tape for the SID from a kind member on Lemon and have been making several concerted efforts the past couple of years to finish it. I consistently make stage 3, but as of yet, haven't quite managed it! *salutes to the difficulty of the game*. Maybe one day.
But it is a great game and I still play it!
The speccy version at least got this part right.
Too tough but still fun.
A hard as bricks game but pretty fair with it, I still play it today. 1010.
It take ages to finish without cheating... But when I went to the end (after about 1000 try), I felt kind of a super-hero...
Another real Must-Have for
a must have for all Commodeore lovers!
And for level 3... The grenade weapon is tough to use, but it works better if you duck to throw it (kills mortar dudes below as well)
Still there's nothing like a good challenge. If I remember correctly it helped not to try to go through it at lighting pace.
Also, the graphics is just average and the music...
GREEN BERET:Kill the whole army with a knife(and with some cheats... )!
6/10
memories...
I remember loading it up, playing it once or twice and throwing my joystick to the floor in rage!
I was good at games but this seemed a little unfair at points. Midnight Resistance was better (but this is still a good game).
Cool
Fantastic action , graphics, and sound but the game was so damn difficult !!!
The variety of weapons and enemies and very good controls makes this game a masterpiece! .
I think its better than the arcade version .
The title music is also a amazing, but anyone else noticed the little ditty bit nicked from Wham's Young Guns.
Oh crap, you know I've listened to Wham.
9/10
A real C64 game !!!
Score 8
ofcourse we may not forget who dares wins!!
I Rate 76/100
It's more playable with unlimited lives IMO, in fact it is hard enough in that mode
