Should C64 have it's own book like "The ZX spectrum book"?

Of course it should, C64 deserves it!

C64 History book.

Post by Hend »

Having seen "THE ZX SPECTRUM BOOK 1982 to 199X", coming out soon and funded by preorders from the community, I was getting jealous...

http://www.zxgoldenyears.com/

It's got a short review in RETROGAMER and just looks fab..
I think it's retailing for about 20 pounds, a bargain.

Obviously I would never dream of reading something on the speccy!, but the same thing for our old Breadbin would be fantastic.

Of course it's a huge undertaking, I for one would happily pledge some hard earned cash and/or time for it's arrival. We have a lot of talented writers and knowledgeable people in the community on Lemon..

(Paul Ranks you seem to have a lot of time on your hands, heres your chance to shine!! )

Please note: this is not a request, but a 'what if?'

C64 history is even more significant, I don't see why it shouldn't have it's own biography.

"On the edge" is more a general commodore book, but still features the history of the c64 as well :)

On the point of Volunteering - we could use 1 page as template and do it for the c64. Take the best year by year. Zzap as always a useful guide.

Note each game page in the ZX book example have the elements:

1. Background Faded In game shot (full page)

Header
2. Main Title (Red)

3. Company, year, memory details
3. Sub Title (yellow)

Left side
4. 3 line impact
5. Game Summary (bold section and non bold)

Right side
Large In game screenshot
Game mag quote
Game Cover
Small Game Loading screen
Small In game shot

Footer (Page no, title, year)

Maybe Power point or setup in Word.
If there is a Maze in it I don't want to know about it!

Hamster, yes that would seem like a good way to do it.. And fairly easy to contribute to, if people were so minded. I think the Speccy book has about 250 games of significance in it. First thing would be to have a poll of games which should be included.... from each year or holistically..

Actually, I'd already spoken to Andrew Rollings about doing a C64 version of the book myself...

I might be helping Andrew Rollings with a volume 2 but he's giving me advice with my 'ZX Spectrum Book of Maps' book I'm working on.

But a C64 specific book might prove popular - if I understand right, the C64 is bigger than the Spectrum..

PS: I've not brought the Spectrum book cause I can't justify £20 for a book to the missus.

Which Paul? Panks? He wrote The Rosetta Star and it's awful. I bought a used copy for $2 earlier this year to satiate my curiosity and I really wanted to like it. It just wasn't possible. The legitimate Amazon reviews (meaning not Paul's review of his own book) pretty much sum it up. It would be best if Paul avoided writing any more novels.
Here's to feeling good all the time.

I suppose the thing is find out how popular it would be.. maybe because of my boring thread title, not many people seem that interested at the mo..

However I am sure that it would sell well, I don't think the Speccy book is overpriced to be honest and C64 book would have to be in a similar range to be feasible I would guess.

There have been several books written about different aspects of the C64 scene as well as Commodore itself. It would be a treat to have one "C64 Bible" as it were with everything about it wrapped up in one nice neat package though.

Is there a C64 book similar to the Speccy one? With similar information put together about the games. If the you look, the format of the Speccy one is just about right.... More content about the C64 games and memories than a history of Commodore book.
