Bop'n Wrestle 1986, Melbourne House
I first played this when I was 14 (mid 1980's); I recall thinking it was going to be a one week game (junk ware). I was wrong; this turned out to be probably the best wrestling game on the C-64: challenging, with numerous moves, and high replay value. It is especially fun playing against a friend.

You fight your way up the ranks until you meet Lord Toff, the toughest of the nine opponents. You can do such moves as body slams, head-butts, suplexes, clotheslines, back body drops, piledrivers, kicks, chops, elbow drops and so forth. These can be done from any of the four directions. You can also do a flying slam off any of the corner posts, which if done correctly will usually give you the win: if you whiff this one, you may end up losing (you take a good chunk of damage for missing, and get stunned)!

The game can seem hard after you defeat the Hillbilly. You basically must practice your moves on the Hillbilly, and then it will get easier. Molotov Mike can be brutal to a new player!

With skill, you can do a series of moves that cannot generally be countered. The computer can do this as well, so it is important to learn how to defend by maneuvering and running, and backpedaling. Once your life bar is below half, you can be easily controlled if you are grabbed by a stronger opponent. This is probably what keeps me coming back, that there is *always* a small chance you can be defeated, even by the computer (the AI is competent and tricky). I dislike games where once I figure out the "method", I can count on a win.

Each opponent has his own style and strengths as follows:

Hillbilly: Stereotype redneck. Easy fight; slow and easy to pin. Whiffs (misses) moves often. Practice against him!

Molotov Mike: Bald guy with an eye patch. Tough, somewhat slow, hard to pin. Likes to head butt.

Arab: Stereotype arab. Somewhat fast, but weak stamina and strength. Tends to do weaker moves; easy to pin. You can often break free of his holds. Molotov Mike is stronger.

Biker: Wears a biker cap. Tough, hard to pin. Messes around sometimes, giving you a second chance if you are low on stamina.

Cowboy: Wears a cowboy hat. Very tough, hard to pin. Likes to do body slams. Tends to finish you off as soon as possible.

Vicious Vivian: Punk rocker psychopath. Tough, hard to pin. Likes to head butt, and likes to finish you quickly.

Indian Chief: Wears an indian head-dress. Very fast and maneuvers well. Can finish you quickly if you are not alert and skilled. Likes to finish by flying off the corner post.

Masked Mauler: Wears a green mask. Very tough, uses a variety of moves, moves in for the kill quickly.

Lord Toff: Wears a gentlemen's top hat. The strongest, and cunning. Does everything well. No time limit when fighting him.

GRAPHICS - 7/10
Above average. The graphics are acceptable and go with the whole wrestling theme. There is variation to all the wrestler's looks. Nothing great, but not bad either.

SOUND - 6/10
The sound is average. The music is corny but funny. The sound of the piledriver and clothesline becomes appealing (thus a six)!

PLAYABILITY - 10/10
You can do combination moves, and there are plenty of moves in general, and there are a variety of ways to bust them out.

OVERALL - 9/10
Fun and challenging! I still enjoy this game after playing it for years (and I play modern games like Supreme Commander for the PC...what am I doing!?). Even when you are very good at it, there's always that small chance the computer might get lucky and combo you to death!
