America's Cup, The 1986, US Gold
The America's Cup and Arnie's America's Cup Challenge were two sailing games released in 1986. They featured exactly the same contents except for the intro screen. One was released by Armchair Entertainment and the other one by US Gold. Some C64s were bundled with one of them.

There is not much to say about these two games. They were doomed from the beginning because of the obscure theme they were based on, something not too many people give a crap about. The games are both below average with sub-par graphics and forgettable music/FX, and very boring gameplay. They just didn't have enough hooks and excitement to keep the players going. The questionable game mechanics didn't help either.

You had to control various control mechanism of the boat by circular motion of the joystick. I broke a Microswitch joystick while playing The America's Cup, trying to figure out the point of the game. No need to mention that I stopped playing it after that incident. Recently I tried them again on the emulators, and soon remembered why I had abandoned them fifteen years ago.

It just wonder why two different distributors decided to publish this lacklustre game. Not the smartest business move if you ask me.

GRAPHICS - 4/10
Nothing really. The ships are OK, but not spectacular. Everything else is weak.

SOUND - 3/10
OK, the music is BAD. The sound effects are passable, but they get on your nerves very fast.

PLAYABILITY - 4/10
Again, nothing much to talk about. Aside from the obscure concept, both games were also badly executed.

OVERALL - 4/10
Sailing games of this kind might appeal to you if you are a sailing fan. Otherwise stay clear.
