This game is the only reason I was popular as a child. No kidding, being the sole kid in my neighbourhood with a C64 AND this great game I was shoulder deep in well-wishers and acquaintances. (My town was entrenched in Apple IIE territory for some unknown reason – must have been something in the water…) I still have some of those friends to this day…and if that’s not a shining testament to it’s greatness, I don’t know what is! In my opinion, it’s probably the best toy-licensed game on the system. (feel free to correct me.)
The game is basically made of three modes – man-to-man combat, vehicle combat, and the loading screen, where you’ll get to watch a seemly endless stream of little orange APC’s stream out of the Joe base, curiously located in the middle of a big grassy field.
Honestly, I hate the vehicle missions…in fact the only time I played them is when I was too lazy to “Turn the Disk Over!!” (as Duke or Hawk would shout at the loading screen – sue me, I could never tell them apart, and I though the loading screen makes him look like some kind of pig-man hybrid anyway.) The Man-to-Man combat segments are by far the most enjoyable – two people can have a blast trying to chase each other around various world locales, including scorching desert, city streets, or icy tundra. (What else was Snow Job good for? You go to the desert, and the idiot’s still in his parka! I guess that’s why my other toy Joes would beat on him…even The Baroness for god’s sake.)
If you like G.I. Joe at all – get this game – It’s guaranteed to give you your retro fix…(Snake Eyes Vs. Strom Shadow? What’s not to like?!) Just make sure you have a fast-load utility – this is one of the slower-loading C64 titles I’ve played, considering the lengthy wait between almost every screen.

| GRAPHICS - 8/10 |
The graphics are great – bright and colourful, well-animated enough, and true to the comics and figures…until you play the vehicle segments, which are pretty much you driving across drab brown or green plains trying to blow up pathetic looking H.I.S.S. Tanks – sorry, but I really hate those parts!
| | SOUND - 7/10 |
The music is excellent…if you really, really like the G.I. Joe Theme song. You’ll hear it looped again and again while you load. I personally like the Cobra Select screen music…then again, Evil always has cooler music! Or does it? Discuss. Sound effects are adequate, and actually functional – If you’re too busy to check out the indicator, a tone will let you know when your guns re-loaded and ready to go! Cool! (I’m easily impressed.)
| | PLAYABILITY - 8/10 |
It’s simple, 2 player fun in the street combat mode – walk in 4 directions, shoot, repeat. Please don’t make me go off about the vehicle stages though – The land vehicles weren’t even that bad, but I hated Ace and his stupid jet! (Toy was cool, though!)
| | OVERALL - 8/10 |
Fun. Fun. Fun. Though I always wondered where cobra was from? Russia? Germany? Canada? The Philippines? They certainly weren’t hurting for cash or overzealous recruits – I’m sure they’re a division of Microsoft. Yeah, that’s it! Yo Joe!
