Guess what, Rick Dangerous has just returned from his first adventure, and is planning to rest a little bit in his home in London. But, oh dear, it is not to happen because the whole city is being attacked by aliens. Yup, that's right, big spaceships fly all over the London skies and are scaring the crap out of all honest English citizens. Now, surely you understand that a hero like Ricky Dangerous can't leave things like that. So, off he goes, straight into Hyde Park where the alien mother-ship has landed. And this is how the second RD adventure starts.
It has to be said, the game is not a massive departure from the first RD adventure in gameplay terms, which means that anyone familiar with Ricky's previous exploits, might experience some sort of deja-vu. But make no mistake about it, this time things are much more polished and well-made.
RD 2 is mainly an arcade game. Rick is armed with a ray-gun and some detonators (both of a limited supply), and with these, he strides along the (quite) big levels killing every alien in sight and destroying all kinds of obstacles. But RD 2 also has some adventure overtones. There are switches to activate (which in turn activate lifts, obstacles, laser beams etc), different courses to follow, various traps to overcome and all sorts of interesting features. You also have to make wise use of your artillery, as finding yourself without ammo can be quite off-putting. So, I guess you could say that RD 2 is an arcade-adventure, or better yet, an arcade game with a strategic twist.
It also has to be said, RD 2 is not the easiest game around. In fact, it gets extremely difficult after level 3. The method with which you progress, doesn't help matters much, as it is mainly through trial and error. I mean, the game is just too damn difficult at times. So much that you wanna scream or kick things in frustration. But I haven't told you the best part yet. It is also very very addictive. You just have to keep on playing. Yes sir, Ricky Dangerous 2 is a great, infuriating, awesome, fantastic game.
The graphics are outstanding : cartoony, well drawn and particularly varied with each level. The sound fx are not quite so good, but great nevertheless. The five big levels offer plenty of action, and there's a handy level-choice-option at the start of the game. Each level is introduced with a terrific animated sequence, which just sets you in the right mood. The multi-load is very well thought-out, and it doesn't take very long for the next level to load. So, there you have it, RD 2 is a great piece of software, and what's more, now it's for free, so don't waste time : download it now!!
