HELP » Emulators & Tools You don't need a C64 to play C64 games! An emulator is a program which lets you play real C64 games on any modern computer. There are quite a lot of emulators out there, but I will only mention the most useful ones. Some games, especially adventures, require that you insert a blank disk for saving games. A blank disk can be found here. VICE - Homepage This emulator is free and supports many platforms including Windows, RiscOS, OS/2 and BeOS. It emulates the C64, the C128, the VIC20 and all the PET models. VICE has great support for most C64 file formats, including cartridges and TAP-files. The Windows version is very easy to use, and lets you play games in a window on your desktop. VICE is my personal favourite! CCS64 - Homepage CCS64 is probably the most compatible emulator out there. It works very well with most games and also has support for TAP-files and cartridges. CCS64 is shareware, but without any limitations. Frodo - Homepage Frodo is a free and portable emulator available for Windows, BeOS, Amiga and RiscOS. With the Windows version you can play C64 games in a window on your desktop. Power64 - Homepage This is a powerful C64 emulator for Macintosh. It works well with most C64 games, and runs on any PowerMac at 100% of the real C64's speed. It's shareware, and the unregistered version only runs for 10 minutes. MagiC64 - Homepage This emulator is for Amiga OS. Magic64 runs most of the filetypes, and emulates many things in a nice way. You need a 68060 processor to run it in full speed, but you will have a lot of fun even with a 68030 at 50MHz. It's shareware, and the shareware version only runs for 10 minutes. SID Players Play C64 music on your PC! The SID chip is the component in the C64 that handles sound. Because the modern computers don't have this chip, it needs to be emulated. SidPlay A platform independent SID player available for Linux, MacOS, Windows, OS/2, BeOS and Amiga. SidAmp Lets you play SID tunes in WinAmp. PlaySid The famous SID player for Amiga OS. TOOLS & CONVERTERS Back to the real thing! These tools are useful if you need to transfer tapes, disks or cartridges back to a real C64. They can also be used to convert between various C64 file formats.
