Yes, this might be the best Commodore 64 game ever made. I like games where you have to think strategically, and the graphics and sounds are really great here too.
The follow-ups weren't quite as good though, apart from the Construction Kit of course. I think many of us made better levels with that program than the pro-official levels of Boulder Dash 4.
Actually the unofficial follow-ups (BD 5 and further on) had better levels than BD 4. At least I think that only the first 4 BD:s are official games. Correct me if I'm wrong.
This game is perfect in every conceivable way. I have no wisecracking comments to make. It's just perfect.
27 years old and just as fun today as it was back then! My 5 year old daughter loves playing c64 Boulderdash! A classic, almost perfect game.
One of *THE* best games ever, still highly playable today.
Everything about this game is just right - and that includes the graphics.. They are functional and more than adequate.
Anyone who moans about the graphics should be kicked in the nuts - and that include Zzap64! reviewers.

My favorite c64 game and one of the first game's i paid for! Due to it's incredibly addictive and challenging levels and then to release a construction kit, unlimited puzzles many thousands available online even now in 2010 9/10 this game has it all. : )

Hell, it's so amazing, that this kind of game has its own genre (here on Lemon64 where the genre is also called Boulder Dash.)

The original and still the best. An all-time classic and undoubtedly one of the top-10 games of all time on any format. And it loads in 30 counts on a tape deck! What more could you want?
The non-Stateside boxart deserves a mention too as it's very strange and it really attracts you to the game: It has a certain depth that you can't see but you want to explore.

So I guess I have to delete the gamefile on my computer, and get an actual Commy Sixfour as well as find a NSTC copy of the original since I live in the Stateside. Also I love the 3rd boxart. The Thing On A Spring visits "Carlsbad Caverns".

Everything about this game is simply incredible. They had a simple but addictive idea. Basically it all boils down to Rockford who collects diamonds and moves boulders around. Add some more features with good taste and you got Boulder Dash. Perfect ten and loads of respect!
Another good game, the sequels were better. Wasn't there like 18 sequels or something deluted like that? Like most games, there was a technique or trick to playing this one which I cannot remember. I tried this game again recently and it's funny to think that I was 10 times better at this game when I was a kid than I am now.
Fantastically done puzzler and the bubbly theme music nearly brings a nostalgic tear to my eye. WARNING: First Star still has this game under copyright and is actively enforcing it. For a similar experience, try Crystal Mines II for the Atari Lynx.
Awesome, challenging, hectic, mindblowing. Yup, you've guessed it, it's Boulder Dash. Many devious levels offers challenge for a while, for a long while I mean. Original is better then the sequel in this case.

The game might be a little dated now but still a brilliant game. One of the first games which I ever played on C64 so it also has a fairly great nostalgia status for me.
Ok, got the GBA cart and have finally seen the light now I've at long last figured out how to play it properly!

I really don´t like games like Boulder Dash, but it's quit funny (but you should better ignore graphics and sound ;-) )
An amazing first with some very very clever puzzles. The later boulderdash series could only copy this game (palely, to say the least). There have been some minor improvements in other games, but this is just about as good as it gets.

Come on! Bolder Dash surely is an OK game, but don't you think you are exaggerating a little bit? The game has bad sounds and the graphics are not spectacular either. Gameplay is OK... But they are many better "thinking" games in the world.

This is the Mona Lisa of the games world.
Even now I can remember all the cave names and what they looked like cos I played it that much. Playing from the beginning I could never get past Cave O (Enchanted Funnel) Level 4 - that's the hardest cave in the game. Go on! Try it now and see how hard it is!
Reminds me of the Vic20 game called Rockman. Good fun and really puzzling to play.
First saw this game on my brother's Atari 800xl & fell in love with it.I used 2sneak on 2play it when he was out (and if he came home and found the joystick had moved by so much as a centimeter I got a slap! Thankfully we get on better these days!) Eventually I got hold of a copy for my C64,and though it wasn't quite as smooth and polished as the Atari version I loved it just as much.After all,it was the gameplay that was the wonderful thing about it,and thankfully the game played exactly the same as on the Atari.Highly addictive,I could play this for hours (and so could my brother,though he was more likely to throw his joystick after getting squished by a falling rock - boy he was NASTY back then!)The sounds were perfect - catchy title screen tune and wonderful in game sounds,the twinkling sound of falling gems,the explosions,and the gurgling amoeba! Possibly the best game of all time! 10 out of 10

Yeah, one of the best games ever written; just thinking about it evokes all my childhood memories of the time. But the best thing is the music - was there ever a funkier SID tune ever written? Loads of character. Amazing.
Phew.. Spend hours and hours with this game... I always think of this game when I hear Bowie.. Was into him back then.. And zzap 64 made Rockford their little mascot as I remember..
This is simply the best computer game ever created! A few rules and a very simple setup give us a game with action, strategy and brainteasing caves. Also the simple, but recognizable graphics, sounds and music give us the very special “BD feeling”, which is hard to describe in words. There is a huge collection of BD games providing us hours, days and nights of fun and addictedness. But this is just the beginning; we also have the construction kit... I really don’t know any other game with all these nice features; Boulder Dash is unique! It deserves a rate 10/10!

Boulderdash is quite simply the best computer game ever written.
Populous on the Amiga/ST comes close, Operation Flashpoint on the PC also comes close but if I had to take one game on Desert Island Discs I'd take Boulderdash+construction kit.
Can't believe I haven't commented on this game!! Peter Liepa and Chris Gray, superb effort, brilliant idea, executed to perfection!! This was one you brought out to show the calibre of game your C64 could produce. Still outstanding to this day re: gameplay. Music simple but effective - just like the game, just like the computer!!
Damn straight people.. This title is just legend. One to make 64 owners truly proud. Running away from a butterfly or firefly, or missing that last rock to trap a huge amoeba (and getting rocks instead of diamonds) .. That's what this game was all about. And Alex, get over it: The 'physics' were perfectly logical. Rocks balance on titanium, but not rock/stone. Very simple. Butterflys turn one way, Firefly's the other. Another fine example of simple rules making a completely addictive puzzle game. 10/10.
This is what super Bomberman was to the Snes, Boulderdash made for me, many late nights, many late days, much cursing and always...ALWAYS coming back to suffer more!. The construction kit just added to the pain and pleasure..
Boulderdash, rules then, rules now, and ahmad, playing Madonna's 80's stuff and playing this and other C64 games is nothing to be ashamed of., its a given, its part of the C64 History, revel, play, emulate and play some more..
Fun, but highly overrated IMO. A buddy of mine loved this game to death. He also loved Summer Games I & II, and .. That's it. He never got to playing The Last Ninja or any of the other great C64 games..

Boulder Dash Happens to be one of my favourite arcade games on C64. I have Boulder Dash 1, 2, 3 and of course number 9. Everytime I play these games I keep on listening to any 80's music from Madonna as always. It sounds weird I know, but I can't help it. Anyways also good music at the beginning, very nice sounds as well and good frames too especially with the two monster that follow me around, the butterfly and that sqaure which I don't know what to call it. Great game to play. I'm gonna rate 10 for this one.

A game with a steep learning curve, which added to its logevity and appeal. The timer was harsh, the boulders unforgiving and why not, you were risking life and limb for precious diamonds!

Hours and hours of fun!
The tune! One loop lasts 20 secs but I listen to it now non-stop with my sidplayer, sometimes for hours.
Never saw the fuss over it, a good game I'll admit, but not the best on the C64 IMHO.

A superb game, it goes without saying. The recent GBA version has a version of the original, but it doesn't have that slow scrolling like the C64, and it's missed.

I wonder why today's game producers don't re-release games like Boulder Dash, HERO and Fort Apocalypse in 2D with up-to date graphics and soundtracks ? The gameplay is superb, and I wouldn't mind paying full price for such a gem on a Playstation 2 for instance. I played these games on a C64 recently and the graphics just don't cut it anymore. Can please someone listen to the oldboys from the C64 generation and bring these games to the newer consoles ???

Boulder Dash isn't really a game, it's actually a way of life, a philosophy.
If you have to list all time classics along with doom,civilization and tetris you just have got to count this as well as it's a timeless classic,nothing short.nuff said.

A fine, fine game. I await the 3D-ified Windows version with dread... But honestly, they'll have to put a lot of work in to spoil a concept like this. Difficult, but immensely rewarding.

Just about to download it to play on an emulator.
I played this game only on my old C64. I was dissappointed when my C64 was crashed, then years and years later I tried to find a game that was exact the same as this one, but I didn't remember the title of the game. Since 1999 I found on the internet the link EMUCAMP.COM and I was happy when I saw the screenshot of Boulderdash.
Now I still play this game and the construction kit is good. 10 for this game.
This is of course the best game on earth(with Nebulus). I am still playing it on my old C64.

I never quite understood what all the fuss was about Boulderdash. I guess it's mildly addictive at first, but I got bored after a while. My main problem with the game was the somewhat strange and unpredictable way the rocks fall. The physics of the game are somehow not very well executed. I 'll give it a 5/10.
