Hi all,

Just an FYI, I wrote a more complete walkthrough for this if any of you want to see it. You can e-mail me at [@] if you want it.

Hi all,

I just wanted to reitrate how awesome this game is. See my tips below for how to beat it. This is a game screaming for a current re-make (though I'd be afraid they'd screw it up, ever see how badly Pirates re-imagining was done from the original one by Microprose?).

I didnt know what to do or where to go in this one but i loaded it nearly everyday to float aimlessly and to befriend people. It was fun and different from all other games that i did own. 10/10 for the fun.

I noted a few people said they never knew how to beat it. It is actually easy:
1) Befriend all the peasants, servants, and samurais
2) Kill Lord Toronaga and Ishido as you have a chance
b) To fight, attack them and then act like you are running away letting them touch the back of your character as you are moving. Do it right and they will lose health and you won't
3) When you befriend characters, issue them their two orders
B) Befriend another character in the game
C) Befriend you so they come back and stay loyal.
4) Bribery or violence works on characters that friendship won't
5) Zen Master Ikematsu is a waste of time. Give him money and befriend him a few times and he is yours forever
6) When you get the Mirror, Buddha, and Scroll, keep them as you don't want to search for them when you have 20 followers as time is limited
7) The Rose opens the cave to the scroll and the book opens the Zen Master's room where the mirror is and the buddha is usually at the temple of the buddha.

Hope this helps, e-mail me at [@] if you need help.

Strangely, this was fun. A bit aimless, I always thought - and isn't the Japanese currency in these historical Japan scenarios usually the ryo or something else, not yen? - but there was a lot to explore, and I do mean a lot. The landscapes evoked imagination (especially as gravity did nothing) and there were even a few secret locations in temples and so on. The waterfalls were amazing. One thing I didn't get - I'm pretty sure the skulls (dead characters) were harmful!

Special mention goes to the packaging. Lovely! Consisted of a hard-cardboard box floppy disk sized with a foam insert inside, cut to allow a tape to rest in it. Packaged with love!

CRAGGLE!!! you are absolutely right when you say "floating about and 'whacking' people was almost as much fun" I still play this game today, although through an emulator on my PC, and I just turn it on for 15 minutes to see just how many people I can whack. I think my record is like 16 in 15 minutes LOL

This game was my favourite C64 game ever. Like many people I never completed it (i'd be hard pressed to get more than 2 followers) but floating about and 'wacking' people was almost as much fun, Excellent!

A classic. Wonderful GFX, excellent playability, hard as heck! Never became a Shogun, but two weeks ago I got really close... Must keep on trying (on my c64!).

God, I remember asking for this game for my birthday in '86. I nearly shat myself with glee when I ripped off the paper. Great game, just seeing the cover again makes me feel all nostalgic. I was shit at it though, never became Shogun!

Unreal game! One of my all time favourites. I played this for years. I only ever became Shogun twice - it was quite difficult. Even when you got the required 20 followers, you still had to find the Buddha, Scroll & Mirror and put them in the Tunnel of Love, (which to get into required the Rose) and you had a time limit too! (only after you got the 20 followers) Once, another character became Shogun. Interestingly, the game didn't end though. You could keep playing and I always wondered if you could still try to become Shogun. I also discovered a way to fight without being hit at all! I was unbeatable in fights. The *only* shortcoming was that objects collected did not bestow upon you any abilities (The Shield or Sword for example) Excellent graphics, music and mood. 10/10!

Shogun -- MY ALL-TIME FAVORITE C-64 GAME... OF ALL TIME!!! Okay, now that I got that out, here's the low-down: Bought this game for $5 at a Hill's department store back in 90', and well, it's the best 5 bucks I've ever spent! I played, re-played... And re-played this game for hours on end back in the day. What could be more fun than walking (or floating in this case) around 17th century feudal Japan and trying to become Shogun by making friends, making enemies, commanding your followers to kill people you don't like, and drinking sake? This game had it all: an easy to learn interface; non-linear, unpredictable gameplay; real-time news that let you know what was going on in other parts of the land; amtospheric sound effects such as: blowing wind, crashing waves along the beach, temple bells, and "chimey" sounds; and of course -- a kickin' Japanesque title theme!!! What more could one want from a game?

It's weird I remember playing this game for months, and I still don't really know how to play it, though I do recall knowing about gifting and the followers, but I still could never figure out how to get better. the flying and secret places are awesome considering how much of the screen they put to use here and how two layers could hide so much

This was yet another WACKED game on C64. I know you were supposed to become Shogun, but the directions never really told you HOW. Being a kid, I had no idea how this game worked. The music was cool. But I never knew what to do - you like "floated" around, collected cool stuff, then... Uh... Nothing!?
Kyle - 2002-11-26
This game was definitely fun in that you could choose to play as any other character. Toranaga was the best, you could gather treasure and hide it in places only you could go. I have so many fond childhood memories of afternoons spent glued to this game.
Erik - 2002-10-30
Having owned the game, I can tell you what the goal is: to gain the most followers by a certain time limit. You get followers by wooing them - you switch to the heart icon and walk all over them until they follow you everywhere. The end result - you become Shogun.
M.S. - 2002-05-26
Along with Nexus, one of my alltime favourites, eventhough I didn't know what to do in this one either
Dave - 2002-02-21
This is the best C64 game ever, it's so ahead of its time that I want to shit my pants
Yossarian - 2002-02-02
This game is BRILLIANT. Truly immersive. Challenging. Fun, mysterious.. Doesn't exactly have much to do with the books.. Doesn't matter, though. AMAZING game.
