I was considering to do the same, as I don't like much the game (ducks for cover) and the original slow version is initially boring; but I think Blabgorius is right in saying that when you go up the ships you need that extra reflexes time.
For now, here's my first effort. You'll all have a hard time beating this

OK, after a couple of rounds resulting in an impressive ZERO points, I finally managed to rack up an impressive Paradroid score:
120 points!!!
Actually, I think I need a tutorial on how to play this game, I haven't really figured out what you are supposed to do. |

For everyone who thinks the original version is boring/too slow (at least at the start of the game), you may not have heard of this (taken from docs I found at Magyar):
"Alert Status: Alert status is shown on most decks wherever you see the word "ALERT" and is usually green. If you destroy droids quickly, the alert status changes to yellow, amber or red, depending on how quickly you're able to destroy droids. Alert status affects scoring (see "Scoring").
Scoring: Yellow/Amber/Red Alert 5/10/25 points per second"
I have to add: The higher the category of the destroyed droid (indicated by its first digit), the higher the effect on the alert status.
Now if you go for alert scoring (get that 711 and strike havoc amongst some 800s!), the game gets a lot more furious. Hope this helps to prevent the Metal fans from dropping out of the competition!
@Sdw: here's the doksi from Magyar:

Hehe the 711s and 742s can be quite fun and you can increase the alert status easily but beware of those 821s who are immune to their disruptors and will come after you in hordes so beware on the lower maintenance and the the cargo decks.
As for the tactics, do you need help concerning the basic principles of play, e.g. destroying and overtaking droids, or something more advanced like how to strategically clear all the decks? |

Thanks!
Damn, this game seems to have quite a learning curve compared to the games we've played in earlier competitions. I'd never played for example WoW in my entire life, but it was never any problem figuring out what to do, but Paradroid is a whole other story... |

Hair rules! Heheh, but I don't have any now! But my head feels about 2 stone lighter! (Slight exaggeration - I don't have hair made of iron or anything...)
I'm not doing very well on Paradroid - 7425, or something, but it's okay cos I've only played <2hrs now in my entire life! More practice and hard work needed... and I have to admit I have defaulted to the slow version (<- WIMP!). _________________ Om. |

This may well be my final word.
I finally made it to the Blabgorius IV (ship #5), where I died of exhaustion on the first deck. Good Night. _________________ To visit c64animation.com, go to www.abc64.de! Hosting trouble... |

To comment on the hair subject, the bigger the better! When referring to mohawks of course! I want one! I've been growing my hair for months but I still dont have enough for a decent mohawk
Anyways, I seem to be quite lost at Paradroid as well.. I like the game quite a bit, and it's very quirky, I like games like that. But frankly, I suck at it. Plain and simple. Can someone explain to me what the shoot what looks like an IC chip wth arrows deal is all about? |

Congratulations Blabgorius IV on your Blabgorius IV score!
And, I must say I'm very proud of myself: I made it on the second ship (Metahawk)! The original is much easier than the metal version, which is the only one I tried before. On the second ship, though, things get much harder very quickly.
Anyways, what are your favourite droids (I should start a poll )?
Mine are the 329 and 629.
The blue battle droid is also cool. And the 751 on Zzap!'s cover was fearsome.
This game is incredibly well thought out and I can hardly believe it was done in 1985... Although it still is not entirely my cuppa tea.

I've noticed what seems to be a bug. On the leftmost decks just over the cargo part (engineering and the one below it) I killed every droid but the decks didn't shut down. After hunting around for a while and having found nothing, I decided to move away and come back later on. When I did, the decks lights were shut, as with normal completion.
It happened to me twice (two different goes) on the first ship. I'm playing the official compo version (Original slow Paradroid by Remember).
Anyone else?
PS I made a slight improvement (23,825). _________________ My top games: 1.Hawkeye, 2.Uridium, 3.Creatures II, 4.Delta, 5.Bubble Bobble, 6.Ikari Warriors, 7.Armalyte, 8.Bionic Commando, 9.Archon, 10.Buggy Boy. |

Thank you!

I feel most comfortable controlling a 420. It's slow but it can take a few laser hits, and best of all, it's disrupter proof, i.e. it's not affected by the 711's and 742's flashing. It's my "go-to-guy" for nasty situations for those reasons.
The 821 is disrupter proof as well, and I like it's super-destructive twin power laser. Great fun to roam a deck crowded with helpless 711s and 742s and kill them all! You can't control the 821 as long as the 420, though.
Some potentially useful information: only the following droids are disrupter proof (it's an official term by Mr. Braybrook himself, btw): 420, 711, 742, 821, and 999.
As I pointed out in another thread before, I think there should be a 343 droid, cos that's my favourite number, but 883 and 476 are nice numbers as well. Did I mention I'm a Paradroid nut?

That's not a bug. Four decks (Observation, Bridge, Engineering, and Maintenance) consist of two parts, as you can see below. The lights will go out once you cleared both parts. I usually clear the smaller part first, as it saves me the trouble of hunting around the bigger part, not knowing whether I finished off all droids.

That's the 'Transfer Game' - you need it to transfer your current robot to a different (and often more powerful) one. But don't worry, with a little practice you'll soon become a master at it! Basically you have to change at least 7 out of the 12 rectangles in the center to your own colour. You can choose which colour/side you want to use (the one which gives you the best advantage - you'll soon discover this), at the beginning. Then move your pulsers up and down the 'wires' to change the central colour to your own colour. Actually, rather than going into great depth about it here, check out that manual that Blabgorius posted earlier, it's explained quite well there. Then all you need is practice....
Hope that helps you out!
| Boçù wrote: | Anyways, what are your favourite droids (I should start a poll )? |
My favourites are the 476 (because it lasts a while and has a half-decent laser), and a toss-up between the 711 and 742. _________________

Thanks Blab for all that useful advice! I knew about the split decks, but I just didn't notice that those two were split
About the favourite droids, I was actually talking about their look; about their usefulness, roaming about with a 821 or a 742 is surely fun (the second especially in large areas!). I never noticed about 420's capabilities, I'll check out.
I'm enjoying this challenge, although it's frustrating to suddenly die after a long way, just when you thought you were doing well, and just under your top score!
Very good game, although different layouts for the different ships and a real ending after ship eight rather than looping would improve it a lot, imo.
And I agree with you: the original slow version is in the long run more enjoyable (you *can* think that you can make it, although you actually never will, at least I won't ), even if graphically I prefer the metal edition, with its shocking colours and heavy bas-relief backgrounds. _________________ My top games: 1.Hawkeye, 2.Uridium, 3.Creatures II, 4.Delta, 5.Bubble Bobble, 6.Ikari Warriors, 7.Armalyte, 8.Bionic Commando, 9.Archon, 10.Buggy Boy. |

Just remember, the use of those energizer places saps your score... and in my opinion, the energy you get from using them isn't that great either. Better really then to transfer to another droid..
Had a fairly good bash last night - 45,690. Reached the third ship (Hewstromo) but died a stupid death almost straight away!! Bah!! I saved the screenshot on my PC but I'm nowhere near finished yet!
@Matt - As I cannot post screenshots, and to save sending you umpteen unwanted emails, I will only send you the one I'll submit for the compo towards the end of the month. Hope this is OK? And one more thing, would I be able to display the screenshot in the thread? _________________
