I've always loved this game, and even moreso thanks to this competition. Was ever a game so deserving of a ZZAP! Gold Medal? For a single load, it's just so playable and so much fun.
I'll be posting a new personal high score soon. |

OK, so I transfered the game to a disk and could finally play it on original hardware with a joystick. I just had time for two tries, but atleast I improved on my previous score (38600) to 53770. But still a LONG way to go to reach the same scores as everyone else seems to get.
Can't I get some bonus points for posting the first screenshot from a real C64 running the game?
Btw. what was the deal with having to do the screenshot before the bonus is added? No way I'll have time to get the digicam ready before the bonus is counted! Well, doesn't look like it will be a problem, I'm nowhere close to a 100k yet! |

Depends if you've got a version with the 100,000 points bug. The game crashes when you reach 100,000 points. However there is a fixed version cracked by Lurid+Tricycle, which hasn't got it. All of us that have got more than 100k are probably using it.
If you don't have it, here's the link so you can download it from Dohi's site: http://web.externet.hu/sk/c64/games/b/b.htm_________________ | Stingray wrote: | | So no one understands exactly how the C64 works as it is reversed engineered Alien technology via the Nazi Vrill project, Project Paper Clip and the TOI project. |

Thanks for the link, I'll make sure to use that version instead just in case I should hit that 100k! |

I definitely agree on the Gold Medal, I love this game, and I'm enjoying this challenge a lot.
As for games deserving it more, I'll shut up, as I don't want to start a fight here
single load: Bubble Bobble... Dropzone... multiload: Space Rogue... Armalyte... Rainbow Islands... Creatures 2... and yes: Hawkeye!
and I still wonder how the heck did they manage not to give a f***ing Gold Medal to WIZBALL!
@Mar: Just you wait, dude, I'll catch you up _________________

Yippeeee!! I've broken through the 100K mark.. But then again, so many others have been on the path before me, that it seems like adventure searched in a city with a map in my hands..
[The image will follow shortly.. ]
Can't upload it anywhere.. Sigh..
Lycos will be back next saturday, so until then my score is:
105900 STR (Offroad)
I guess now's the time to try my luck on a different track.. Although there's definitely some arcade-elements, the game is for a large part 'learnable'. With every game I played, I learned more about the whereabouts of objects and flags, and the best way to get them..
[edit time again] Here's the picture:

Right on guys! Great scoring! I'll be playing at all oppurtunities today... Gotta catch Thunderer! Rivalry is cool!
I agree with all of you that think this is a great game. Even with it's bugs, I spent quite a lot of time playing this back in the day - obviously not enough, though!
Boçù, my friend, I agree entirely about Wizball, but what did Zzap! give it though - cos I can't really remember! Sizzler? Silver medal?
I applaud those playing with the real thing too! If I only would spend some of the little money I have, on making that XE1541 cable, I would too! But then again I don't have anything to grab screens that way...
Anyways - some one else want to do an updated table? _________________ Om. |

Well, to be honest they didn't go that far from "truth":
Wizball got a 96% Sizzler in issue 27 (July 1987). What was a bit strange, imo, is that until July there hadn't been any Gold Medal in 1987, so what was wrong with Wizball? Immenselly original, wholly playable, great in the visuals and even more aural stakes, fantastic two-player mode, single load... Many blame it on Gary Penn, including myself.
Then the Gordon crew came in and they gave it the Def Shoot 'em up award (Issue 43, November 1988) and they put it at the very top of their all time top 20 (Issue 44, December 1988). On rerelease it got a 97% Silver Medal, I guess around autumn 1989 with the SW-RH-PK staff. Finally, it was voted #2 all time c64 game in Zzap!64 #107.
You can find the scans at Marticus' excellent site, Wizball Shrine, under the miscellaneous section.

@Boçù: Thanx for the link... I have a fairly bad memory for things like this... (read: everything)
@SHOCKTROOPER: Good work dude!
@Matt: You are truely a genius imo! Why no-one else started a games compo thread before is completely beyond me! I am (and quite obviously others are too) really enjoying the challenge to beat others scores!
@Thunderer: I'm sorry my old nemesis... I haven't bettered your score yet! But fear not, there is plenty of time yet! _________________ Om. |

No problem.. I'm at home for the moment anyway.. Was involved in an accident almost 3 weeks ago, and still have some injury in my left shoulder. A tendon got ruptured, so I can only do 'sessions' of about 20 to 30 minutes at the computer right now, which is enough for a game of Buggy Boy
So you can count on me to try and beat those scores!! |
