What do these actually do Tomi? Do they enhance Commodore 64s sound on a stock system? _________________ |

For what I understand: its a way to build the two SID versions into 1 C64.
For the older games the 6581 and for newer demos/games the 8580.

Sounds lovely but very fiddly. Not too great with hardware modding _________________ |

What donmac said. You can put both 6581 and 8580 SID into one C64 making the sounds sounding stereo-ish. This is because 6581's and 8580's have different sounds.
You can also configure the other SID to different addresses ($D420/$D500/$DE00/$DF00) so you can listen to stereo sids on real hardware.
It might sound fiddly if you haven't thought about 6581's and 8580's sounding that different. I might send you a few recordings I've made so you know what I mean.
(edit)
Here are some recordings I made with the C64 I sold a while ago:
Commando
Delta
Dragon's Lair II
Forbidden Forest
Ghostbusters
I-Ball
Lightforce
The Last V8
Wizball
Yie Ar Kung-Fu II |

Would a "Sid Symphony" do a similar thing with games or is it less advanced? |

I'll have some of this action.
How does the C64 output stereo audio though, it doesn't have stereo output? |

Two ways:
1. If you set both SIDs to the same memory address, they make the same sounds. However, since the 6581 and 8580 have different filters you get kind of a fake stereo effect, an "audio illusion" if you will.
(I can't emphasize how pronounced the effect is, the noise voice sounds especially good and full, great explosions ) You even get this somewhat if the SID types are the same, since no two SIDs are identical.
2. You can set the second SID to a different address and play SID tunes that were specially written for two SID chips. Just make sure the addresses match.
If you meant how do you get the 2nd audio signal out..that's a bit more complicated. I drilled a hole on my 64C case and put a 1/8" headphone jack there, then wired it up.
I'm tempted to get a second DualSID as a spare. |

This thread reminds me that I never posted my pictures of my DualSID installation. Here's the presentation from World of Commodore last year.

Hi Tomi - This is an AWESOME idea! - Just spotted this, and I deffo want one/two when I get paid on the 15th!
Just to clarify - if I opt for an 8580 or a 6581 version, does this mean it's meant for the appropriate C64, or that it's to put that particular flavour additional SID chip into whichever C64 you want? (ie. are the boards compatible with both C64 and C64C as they come, but the type I buy is for which additional chip model I want to populate the second slot with?)
Thanks again for a SUPERB hardware upgrade Tomi - those mp3's sound fantastic!
...and if you still offer the service, I'd like to pay the extra when I order them and have them pre-built, ready for my SID's please?
Den.
