I got one spare 1581 kit and come across this tasty looking device.
Anyone tried this before?
PS: Is there loading speed increase with GEOS when using uIEC as compared to real 1581? _________________ c64midi.com

"*.D81 - Alpha version. Waiting for tests on real hardware."
So, in other words, support for 1581 images has been included in the firmware for some time but apparently there haven't been motivated people to try out how it works. |

If you're going to use it as a mech substitute in general I'd suggest you to go for either bare or cased rev C, the one you linked is ment to be assembled in standard drive bay like the ones in tower or industrial computer cases making it rather hard to use for modding purposes.
Edit: I have to also point out that HxC ain't able to handle any disk images as-is but requires them to be converted into it's own format, you can ofcourse export them back to their original form aswell but that still means one additional step in the case of moving files between systems, ie. C64 and PC, back and forth. |

It is slightly faster because it doesn't have to wait until all of the mechanical stuff is ready (disk spinning, head over the correct track), but the data transfer speed itself is determined by the protocol on the bus which is still the same. _________________

Looks neat - I don't see how this would work as a 1581 floppy emulator.
From the listing:
Tested on PC, Atari ST, Amiga, Amstrad CPC, Thomson, MSX, ZX Spectrum series computers.
List of supported file images type:
* ST, MSA, ADF, ADZ, DMZ, CPC DSK (standard and extended)
* CopyQM DSK, Oric DSK, IMG, SMC,MSX DSK, IMD, Zx Spectrum DSK, BetaDisk TRD,
* BetaDisk SCL, Thomson TO8D SAP, Thomson TO8D FD, PC88 D88, x68000 HDM (beta), x68000 XDF (beta), custom raw floppy geometry
* An AmigaDOS or FAT12 floppy disk image can also be generated from spares files.
Doesn't even mention C64 or D81 support. _________________

this kind of devices usually can be configured for whatever disk layout - so as long as its a standard MFM disk (which 1581 is), then it will work. it would NOT work with 1541 or even amiga. _________________

But this device works with Amiga groepaz, no? I'm sure I've seen video this device integrated to a600.
Isepic in the listing there is links to full list of supported devices and 1581 is in it.
Indeed Rompainen that facia will fit in fd-2000 but not in 1581. _________________ c64midi.com

i would assume it doesnt. the amiga uses a different encoding scheme for the sectors than standard disks, which that kind of devices usually do not (and dont have to) handle.
that said, recently some "next generation" devices surfaced which do not work on MFM but on lowlevel flux transitions - these would work with whatever you throw at them. however, they also are quite expensive =P _________________

Actually all of the HxC Floppy Emulators work with Amiga. You can check out all the wonderful systems that it works with on this page:
http://hxc2001.free.fr/floppy_...index.html
I've got three of these devices and they are amazing.

*EDIT* Looks like Romppainen already provided this link in his post above. |

You wasn't even bother to read description groepaz
| Quote: | | It is very smart device, designed by Jean-François DEL NERO, adopted to 3,5' case by Jeff and Lotharek. It allows you to emulate any 34 pins floppy disk drive. The SDCard HxC Floppy Emulator can replace different kind of floppy disk drive and allows you use SDCard media instead of floppy disk. This emulator is actually used on Amiga, Atari, CPC, PC computers, different keyboards and samplers, CNC machine tool, and scientist instruments. |
That guy Lotharek just make them in a few versions. _________________

I haven't followed the development progress actively for a while, have they already implemented proper write support for Amiga images or is it still read only? |

Yep, write support since Rev C. The older versions can be modified to give them the write support. I have one Rev C and two older ones. I just haven't gotten around to modding the older ones yet.

Very nice, mine is Rev C but as I originally bought it to use with CPC 6128 I never bothered to check out how's the compatibility with other machines nowadays: Time to rip open my A500 I guess. |
