|
|
I'm looking for a game that I think was called Spacewar in the arcade. It was a black and white game with a starfield that looked a lot like asteroids, and two people played against each other. There was a sun in the center that had gravity, and you were constantly being pulled toward it. I loved that game, and my son and I were playing some old C64 games today, and I was wondering if that one was ever ported to the C64? If so, I'd love to have a copy... |

I can't remember other conversions but there's one included in Arcade Classics. |

Thanks. Downloaded it, and...well, it's a horrible port! We found it to be totally unplayable. Are there any others? |

I don't know of any exact ports, but I know of two games that are the same idea;
Fun Duel

Star Control

In Star Control, you can pick from a variety of ships, each with different abilities.
I'd really recommend playing Star Control on the Amiga though. Better graphics, animation and sound. One tip; Switch from the mouse to a joystick before the game finishes loading or it won't allow you to set both players to joystick control. |

I made a couple of attempts at making a version, using various arcade game creators but none did everything I needed. I briefly played it on MESS's PDP-1 emulator but a solo game is pretty useless. And it's hard as hell to get started.
I haven't tried any of the versions listed here though. Maybe one of them will do. _________________ Emulation is the sincerest form of flattery. |

Stellar Triumph could be another game, that fits to what you're looking for?

Take a look...we played it back in the 80'ies, and we had some fun with the game. _________________ My life without a breadbin would be

Delta War from Compute's Gazette is a pretty good Space Wars type game.

Space Wars had a decent version on the Vectrex.
Sometimes I wish Peiselulli modded his Minestorm engine to churn out "Space Wars", "Rip Off", "Cosmic Chasm" and "Solar Quest" for the C64... but unfortunately he got tired of doing Vectrex ports. |

Check out Stellar Triumph
http://www.gb64.com/game.php?i...18&h=0
It has many of the features of Spacewar, and game parameters can be customised. _________________ |

I know it's been a month, but I am actually still planning on trying these! I found out a little more. The game I'm remembering from the arcade was called Space Wars from Cinematronics. It turns out it WAS a vector graphics game, which is probably why it was ported to the Vectrex. Thanks for telling me about yet another system I have to collect!
That may also explain why the C64 and Atari ports are so bad...they didn't have the horsepower to do the graphics.
I did get a chance to try Fun Duel, and that too had horrible gameplay. It was like a very nice demo with cool music, with a couple ships you can barely control, and no actual game sound.
The others were on T64 files, which I had no idea what to do with since I don't play in emulator land. It turns out there's a program called DirMaster for Windows that allows you to extract PRG files from T64 images. In this case, both of the recommended games were in a single prg, so I have that done, but haven't had a chance to play them yet! |

Finally, something to report! Stellar Triumph is the closest thing I've seen. You can mess with the gravity and the velocity of your shots, inertia, all the stuff from the original game. It still doesn't have that line-drawn vector graphics look, but they got the spirit of the game exactly right. This one's a keeper! Thanks for the recommendation. _________________ "There's just something about emulators that makes me think of N/A beer and electronic cigarettes." |

That's actually quite cool. I never saw that one back in the day. At 12 years old I would have been hooked on it for sure! _________________
