I have one, better machine than NES but like the NES the joypads are awful. Also graphically it is better than C64 of course but sonically it is quite inferior in my opinion (as is every other 8bit machine's sound capabilities IMO)

Otherwise a shame it didn't get the 3rd party support NES did. R-Type and Shadow of the Beast are quite impressive on the machine.

I have an arcade joystick for my SMS, only way to fly really Smile

I have a passing interest in the Master System, but I've always favoured the Game Gear. There's no region encoding and all the games run in 60 Hz. It also has a bigger colour palette than the Mega Drive.

I've got several SMS2 consoles and about 15 games. A good little machine for its day and sold very well in Australia. Graphically pretty but has that annoying flicker when a lot happens on screen. Sound doesn't rate anywhere near as high as the c64.

I used to own a Sega Master System many years ago. I definitely rate it higher than the NES although it didn't have SMB. It had Sonic though. Best 8-bit console at the time, imo.

The C64 is still miles better though Smile

My count says I have 83 games excluding built-ins but including double-ups? I haven't bought one in years...longish post coming up! (For comparison, I think I have 200+ Megadrive games, and close to 200 NES games. Over 500 C64 games though!)

...I must admit, looking at these lists makes me want to play stuff. A few hidden gems there. Dragon Crystal is a nice Roguetype. Master of Darkness is a Castlevania-type game set in Victorian London, I believe. Psychic World/Psycho World is quite a fun game. Ultima IV on SMS is probably the best version. And Street Fighter II is hilarious on Game Gear!

I love my SMS. I am using the game pad on my C64. I would disagree with C64Knight on the NES controller being bad though. I think the NES controller is just right. Maybe because I have so many hours using one.

The SMS was underrated. I would have loved to see it have some exclusive characters to compete with Metroid, Zelda and Mario.

There are some great games though. We used to play hooky from school and play Double Dragon on it all day.

Much like c64, there are quite a few good titles released in europe, but not in the US.

rgd, I'm missing Japanese mk3 (not Mortal Kombat 3, Sega Mark III!) stuff in general. It's waaay down on my to-collect list, but it's on there. Anything that uses the FM music would be there, anything with different gameplay or even graphics (Kenseiden for example), would be there. But when it comes down to it, EU is the best region for the console by far. Japan has a few odd things and Brazil has a few really good Tec Toy things (SF2, Sonic Chaos, etc, etc) but ultimately it is the rest of the world who missed out for once, not us. Yay!

There's some interesting pre-Mark III stuff though, which is compatible with the Mark III itself - Monaco GP, Chack'n Pop and Bomb Jack immediately come to mind. Also, earlier conversions of Wonder Boy and Penguin Land. All quite playable, although they look like a MSX/Colecovision game!

The only joypad that doesn't hinder my high scores is the special 6 button Sega one for use with the Megadrive/Genesis versions of Street Fighter 2. I played NES Galaxian and Donkey Kong using a decent joypad with an emulator and enjoyed the games much more than on my actual NES console with the original pads. I might sell my NES actually as in this specific case emulation far exceeds the actual gaming experience for me.

The NES d-pad is relatively stiff, difficult to do accurate diagonals too IMO, as are the buttons and so I personally find the ergonomics inferior if you compare it to that 6 button Sega pad. Sure the Amstrad GX4000/Atari 7800 pads are even worse but like I said the only one with accurate comfortable to use d-pad and soft sculptured buttons is on that Sega 6 button unit personally speaking. The rest are inferior and therefore a waste of my time IMO. The PC-Engine Core Grafx pads are probably second in my table of acceptable quality.

YMMV but perhaps you are just making do with, and gotten use to using, that product because Nintendo machines can't use standard 9 pin d-pads and those are your only choices? Not trolling, just saying how I found using the NES/SMS/7800/GX4000 pads after acquiring one of each years ago.

(CD32 pads are god awful too IMO, but the Sega 6 button SF2 pads don't work on it, shame really)

Have to agree with the pro-NES controller posters, I never liked the Sega pads, the d-pads were too loose and I never felt in complete control. I'm not saying the Nintendo ones were stiff, they just felt more solid and perfectly balanced, worked a treat. And I've played many games across formats and the NES games were always more enjoyable for me. I'm not saying the Sega ones were bad, I loved a lot of them, but the NES ones were just.... better. Solstice being a particular favourite I could spend hours and hours on. Just my two cents Smile
