Back when I wrote Copy ][ 64/128 at Central Point Software, the SX64 that I used had a device installed in it that was a disk speed up hardware/software. It consisted of new ROMs for the 1541 and SX-64, along with 2 or 3 extra wires. It might have actually been partly a VIA replacement. I don't recall. The extra wires were used for additional serial communication bits. The advantage of this setup was that it replaced just the serial transfer routines in the ROMs so that ALL transfers were super fast. The reason why this machine was setup this was because the assembler we were using stored its files in SEQ file format, and normal fast loaders did not speed up SEQ or REL file types.

I am trying to figure out the name of that product and if I can find one somewhere. Any ideas?

I know it was not any version of JiffyDOS (it was long before that). It also wasn't any of my or Mike Henry's replacement ROMs.

Thanks!

Was it the 1541 Flash! from Skyles Electric Works maybe? I never owned one, but pictures made it look like a daunting install, with a bunch of wires involved.

Maybe so.... I know what the setup looks like, so I will google that and see if that's it.

Thanks! I had forgotten this name completely!

Wow... that brought back some memories. Bryce Nesbitt sold this to Skyles Electric works after trying to sell it to Megasoft. I was already working on something similar so there was a conflict of interest. Reggie Warren and Bryce got into some kind of argument about it. I don't recall the details, but whatever was said Bryce then became a big enemy.

Here's the 1541 Flash. I think the SX-64 had it's own version too.

Yep, that's it. Central Point Software had one in their SX-64 that I used while developing Copy ][ 64/128. That really made things faster when assembling.

If you happen to want some kind of speed up, the de-facto standard these days is JiffyDos, and the best place to get it is from Jim Brain's store

And, if you want a mass storage device, take a peek at the uIEC/SD card on that site too. Sure beats using floppies!

You can put all of the .d64 files you're creating on an SD card, pop it in the uIEC, and using JiffyDos, basically CD (change directory) right into a .D64.

I have JiffyDOS on all of my C64's and C128s. I just got it for my SX-64 as well.

I already have the latest 1541 Ultimate, so I have unlimited storage that won't go away and its easy to switch .d64 disks on the fly.
