In your opinion, what has been the best:

1) Real Time Strategy series (eg. Command & Conquer, Warcraft... ?)

2) RTS/Turned-based hybrid series (eg. Total War... ?)

3) Turned-based strategy (eg. Heroes of Might & Magic, Civilization.... ?)

.....war game series over the last 20 years ?

There's been so many great games in these sub-genres. Too many great games actually. An extended teenage-hood needed (over 20 years - Tweens ?), without the inconvenience of school, work, tertiary study, or real life, to impinge on gaming time.

I never liked the RTS genre, but there were some great turn based games, which are almost forgotten now. Battle Isle and Panzer General series comes to my mind, as very playable and for its time, good looking games.

Transport Tycoon is my all time favorite RTS game. OpenTTD means that you can play it even today. but that was on the pc.

UFO 2 was also a huge favorite of mine (turn based).

I am a big fan of Heroes of Might and Magic, so I'll go with that.

I'm with you brother. "real time" and "strategy" don't even belong in the same sentence if you ask me!

I've only played like 3 RTS-type games...

1. Battlezone I (Pandemic Studios, 1998) - Based on the Atari coin-op, this is an "extended" version of it, released in 1998. More FPS than RTS though, but it actually is both. Has actually won a couple of industry awards.

2. Battlezone II (Pandemic Studios, 1999) - By far the finest FPS+RTS (aka FPRTS) ever conceived, it is the sequel to the one listed above. It is still going strong with unofficial patches coming forth by one of the developers on the original coding team (in his spare time). I was on the private beta test team for a few years myself.

3. Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor (2009?) - My current addiction, it is RTS as far as I know. It's a WWII scenario, though you are only limited to American, German (Nazi) and British military sides. Tales of Valor is an expansion pack, but is playable without having to buy the main program.

I've tried other RTS games, but never got piqued to go through their learning curves. These have included Dark Reign and Sacrifice. Plus not enough time dedicated to so many games due to real life stuff. I was/am more of a FPS gamer especially through my early gaming years (~1975-2005), just shoot anything that moves, heh.

Yes, it's a great game. Bought the original + The Titans expansion years ago.

However, it was only about a month ago that I played through all the campaigns. Excellent stuff. Smile

Overall, as everyone surely knows, Ensemble Studios' Age of Empires series were superlative. Up there with the RTS greatest. Shame the company folded in 2008.

Playing Age of Empire Online again, this time with all the extra DLC civilizations ... there was a sell on Steam.

Looks pretty sweet, AOE Online. I checked the website:
http://www.ageofempiresonline.com/en/

However, I've still got older AOE III and it's expansions to play through. Smile

One can't fault the whole Age of Empires' series. However, my heart is with Starcraft and Warcraft (not WOW) as the best RTS series. So many great RTS games on PC though.....

I don't play these type games often due to time constraints, but I did like Rise of Nations when I dabbled in it. I played Homeworld 2 for the soundtrack. Smile

Both superlative RTS games. The Homeworld saga was nearly my first choice for favourite RTS series. However, I went for the Starcrafts and Warcraft (II + III, never played Warcraft I) series.

Own them all except the Shoguns. From what I've played so far, the whole Total War series is awesome! This gets my vote for best hybrid RTS/turn-based strategy series. Thumbs Up

Yes, for me, this has also been the most absorbing, the best, turn-based strategy series. Very addictive. Especially HOMM V and it's expansions. Just love how the combat is executed.

However, even older mentioned gems such as Panzer General and Battle Isle are great.

Yet, one could even hark back to 6th-Century AD times with chess. Wink
