Just wondering how long people on here think a work lunch break should be. Apparently the once standard lunch hour is becoming a thing of the past. For many an hour is too long and 20 minutes to 40 minutes is enough. For others they don't bother and just work through lunch.Does it depend on the kind of work that you do ? If you are sitting on a desk all day is it good to go out and go for a walk ?
Maybe it's variable depending on the day of the week and the workload 30 minutes Monday to Thursday and a 2 hour lunch break on Friday ? Very Happy

I take what I feel I need, just as long the job is done. Cool
Today, approx. 1h 40min.

I have had 30, 40 & 60 minute lunches at various jobs. The one where it was 40 minutes, we actually got paid for 10 of it. I prefer having an hour though. 30 is probably plenty for those that take a lunch with them to work, but really isn't close to enough time if you want to go out somewhere.

When I worked for myself I never had lunch because I loved my work. When I worked for someone else in a job I hated I had exactly 60 minutes and 0 seconds for lunch whether I needed it or not Wink

Now I am semi-retired (until I think of a new business I would like to do) so it's not really an issue but for most people in some job they don't really like much the 1 hour freedom out of the office is important so you don't end up killing that nob of a boss Wink

We get a paid 20 minute morning tea break. However, our 30 minute lunch break is not paid for. Lunch time is so overated, with all the bitchiness and narrow-minded superstitious and pseudo-scientific nonsense conversations I have to endure in the lunch room. I'm so over it. Rolling Eyes

An hour is good if you need to go somewhere to get something or do something. However, if you have lunch at the same time as everybody else you spend the time in traffic, which is hardly relaxing. If you have an hour, I'd say go for a walk or something. Don't just sit on your ass. However, I work nights and have a half hour. If I had an hour I'd be bored since there's nothing to do at 0100 or so.

That's the offical line. Unofficially, I'm usually done by lunch time and if I still have work to do I just keep plugging until I am done. I hate to go out again after eating. I always feel stuffed when trying to do all the bending reaching lifting stuff we do. I should get bigger pants. Smile

However long it takes to have lunch.

I tend to spend about an hour. sometimes longer sometimes less. But it depends, a shorter lunch hour means I can finish my work sooner at the end of the day.

We're scheduled for our breaks, and bloomin' micro-managed too, even though management are the ones always late back. Thankfully about 50% of my time is spent in a role where I can take my breaks at what time I want, but because we've got to log out and in to our computers they're still strictly timed. A 15-min paid for break, a 30-min unpaid one, and another 15-min paid for. If I had the choice this is the way I'd prefer it, I agree with the bitchiness that happens in our break room too, and there's just some people I can't stand to be around! Thankfully either The Big Bang Theory is on the TV or I've my Commodore Formats with me on my iBooks Smile

I really like the team I'm in but we can't be on breaks at the same times.

45 minutes standard, we can take 30 minutes if we want and leave early or something, or conversely if we ask it's usually fine to take an hour or more.

I loved my 1 hr lunch break - used to play table tennis and pool with my mates.

We then moved from Manchester to Halifax though, so I changed my hours and now have a 45m lunch break - no table tennis and pool now!

I just read the paper with a brew - not bad!

I would always have a lunch break - mine is unpaid, see no reason to work through it for free - unless I was finishing early.

That breaks all sorts of OH&S regs mate. You should be onto them for that. And before you get all "no one likes hard work anymore", it is not about dodging work. It is about looking after your health and safety. This is not the 19th century.

Normally an hour, sometimes 1/2 late afternoon when there's too much going on. Don't mind because that means leave a half hour early that day or next (thankfully I am not salary).

Depends what it like to work for the company you work with.

The last company I worked for was the worst I ever had the misfortune of working for so I did them no favours.

If I worked somewhere that the owners didn't treat staff like c*nts and also if it was flexible then I would take less time for lunch, done it in the past.

Still whilst working there for 18 months I posted about 700 Commodore 64/Vic-20 gameplay videos, half of which was on work hours ha!

I have my own business, so lunch break is non existent, eat and work.
Years ago I worked somewhere that had 30mins on the dot, not one second more or less, I hated it. If you were in the middle of something you had to drop what you were doing and go for lunch, stupid boss.

I typically eat small snacks at my desk and skip lunch entirely. Don't know why, I just find that going out to lunch takes too much time out of my day...
