I do have some issues with this. The magazine is still on sale, and it's copyright. And some features from Retro Gamer are reprinted in later anthologies and on the NowGamer website. _________________ |

I certainly don't think it's right to "reprint" it here when the issue it's from is still on sale! Even posting it later when the magazine itself (i.e. Retro Gamer) is still being published is dodgy. _________________ |

I wonder if Andrew would object?
First off i would say this reprint is for anyone not lucky enough to be able to obtain a copy of Retro Gamer to read the interview.
For future prosperity as regards this thread too.
http://www.lemon64.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=41507
If the argument is that Retro Gamer lose sales because of this reprinting then i disagree. Maybe some. But the numbers most surely would be insignificant.
This reprinting is because i'm a fan of Andrew Braybrook and Retro Gamer both.
I see the reposting as an advertisment for both.
The benefits / disadvantages of piracy could be argued until the cows come home.
It's also probably quite ironic that the majority of C64 users, i would guess hold many pirated C64 games and material.
I'm sure the mods could delete the reprint if it contravenes the Lemon 64 rules.
Don't forget, Retro Gamer is not just this article, but issue 100 was 2 magazines running to about 100 pages each.
So, the interiew reprint above is only a small part of the magazine. |

Didn't know this myself. Wonder how that slipped me by.
@merman, iain
My moral compass on these things is always "is a sale lost due to the copying?". I'd have to argue not in this case. |

I would hope that people attempt to purchase the magazine before they resort to this, myself. I mean, a fair amount of effort must have gone into the interview and all. |

I stand by what I said - Retro Gamer is an ongoing commercial concern, and this is not right. Andrew Braybrook has not given interviews over the years, so when a publication gets one it's right to support it.
I'm a fan of a top band, does that give me the right to reprint an interview with Rolling Stone on the net because I can? No. I certainly don't agree with putting it on the forum just because it interests C64 fans. _________________ |

I understand that, but do you think this thread will affect that commercial concern? Was someone going to buy Retrogamer this month and now will not because this interview is reprinted here? I would find that extremely hard to believe.
I understand the legality of it, it really shouldn't be here, but TBH retrogamers like us have been ignoring such IP laws for years. |

So I can just quote from Playboy on a models forum because I am interested in it?
If there was widespread reprinting of articles from NEW magazines, of course it will affect sales. Legally this forum could be held liable for breaching copyright. Do you want it closed down?
We're very lucky to have a magazine devoted to retro gaming. Support it. _________________ |

I read that article (when it was just a link) and I never thought twice about it until the moral issue was brought up.
I stopped buying Retrogamer a couple of years ago for no other reason than I think I just lost interest. However, if I'd known that this month's issue had that interview in it I would have gone out of my way to buy it (WH Smith's sell it in the station) but Masked_Coder had already supplied it and I was in my jammies sitting in a comfy chair and hell, it was instantly available.
What he should have done I suppose is say, "check out this month's Retrogamer, it's got a recent interview with Andrew Braybrook in it." And by doing that they would almost definitely have got an extra sale from me. In a month or two he could have stuck it on the site when the mag was off the shelf. (Although I suppose even that would be suspect - you could always buy a back-issue directly from them I suppose. But would I have gone to that much effort? No, I don't think so.)
Of course the problem's really mine, it's just that Masked_Coder had put temptation in my way. And being of weak character, I'm easily tempted.
If the site could really be done on copyright grounds I think the thread should be deleted.
On the Gribbly's Day Out different versions, I think that must be a mistake. Gribbly's Special Day Out has a different font but I don't remember it having different levels. Edit: I just played it and it looks like the levels have been rearranged in order of appearance. |

So, the interiew reprint above is only a small part of the magazine. |
1. I write for Retro Gamer. The contract for the article states it is their copyright once printed, and they have the rights to reprint the article in future.
2. Any lost sale is significant for a niche magazine.
3. Using your arguments gives anyone the right to "preserve" an article online. This contravenes the terms and conditions you agreed to when you joined the forum as you have broken international and UK copyright law.
4. Saying "I have pirate material so I can pirate" is no defence.
I will report this thread to the moderators and ask for it to be taken down, unless you want to remove the text yourself. _________________

Yeah, for obvious reasons, and not just because I write for Retro Gamer too, can't really allow this to remain here. _________________ Mayhem64 - for all your cartridge needs!
