Ok... I wanna start making multimedia on PC.
I need a reference about DirectShit... Pardon, I mean DirectX.

I got used to C64 programming. Programming the VIC-II in low-level.
But, I don't think it's used anymore. At least not in Windows. Maybe DOS.

Anyway, I need some books. Could you guys recomend something for start?
Maybe you know 'Programming Windows' by Charles Petzold. I need something like this, except that it should cover DirectX APIs.
It would be the best if I get some links.

I tried searching with Yahoo and I got some webs, but they are not enough for start.
Primary, I need DirectDraw and Direct3D. But neither a game nor a demo would be interesting without music. So I also need DirectMusic and DirectSound.

Microsoft... Fame with Lame... Laughing
DirectLame... DirectShi... X... X... DirectX... DirectX suX Laughing

But, do I have any choise ??? Evil or Very Mad
C64 RULEZ !!!!! Very Happy

Thanks in advance...
Greetz...

I have one book called "Tricks of the Windows Game Programming Gurus"
by Andre Lamothe, that deals with DirectX.

I feel that book sucks at least partially (although it covers all the DirectX subsystems quite nicely) and I've learned much more from studying the source code of various emulators Smile That book has also a smaller section of some general game programming stuff, that is almost more interesting than the DirectX part Smile

Then again, I'm strictly concerned only of the usage of DirectDraw2 & DirectSound2 (and preferably not even that, Windows Multimedia Waveout rules Razz) interfaces, so maybe I should shut up Smile

Also, the Win32 API reference online help file is really useful (It covers also DirectX, at least old versions). It comes at least with the free LCC C compiler, don't know otherwise.

Thanks for the info, Lasse!

I bought a book about DX7, a couple of days ago.
I understood the basic concepts. And also, I made my first D3D piece. A pyarmid rotating around the Y-axis and also swinging around the X-axis.
It's not a miracle, but it looks nice for a first try.

I gotta make this on C64. It would look nice for the little demo I'm planning.

Oh, the book I mentioned was written by Robert Dunlop, microsoft's first and only MVP.

Not that you would care, but I added a texture and some lights on my (un)famous pyramid. But it slowed down terribly on my 2MB svga.

Hey you, who are stearing at the screen! Stop laughing, will ya? Or I'm gonna put you in a cannon! Razz

I just don't understand why. I mean games like Montezuma's Return work good (not excelent) even if they contain complete 3D world. And I have problems with a little pyramid.
