Ever since I began using my C64 in 1985, I used one cart and one cart only.. Epyx Fastload. Sometime this weekend I'd like to dabble with the Action Replay option on the 1541U (first version). Any tips on my main goal of freezing a game in mid action, whether it's a disk game or a prg, and continuing where you left off. I know it has a bunch of sprite options so I'd like a rundown of those too.
Yep, I've never "froze" a game before. Total noob in this area.
Thanks

I would freeze games after I got past a hard section or level. That way I didn't have to play through it again. That was before games had trainers so I couldn't play with infinite lives or skip levels. Also be sure to try the infinite lives function of the Super Snapshot (I think you can do that on Action Replay too). Very cool stuff.

Also, besides that, if you use (for instance) Retro Replay. It has a Poke Finder. This is great for the games you don't have a trainer for. Basically, you play the game and right before you die you press the freeze button and go into poke finder. Do what it says. Go back to the game and lose one life. Then go back to Poke Finder. You should now have unlimited lives.
You also can enter pokes to cheat in games. Additionally, there is a spot called saveland. This can save koala pics, etc... to disk.
Additionally, you can freeze a program and save it with the Turbo load option. It can load up really fast using this. However, it might night be compatible with all devices (i.e.: uIEC possibly).
If you you do go and save as standard and it is over 202 blocks, it will break it down into two files. You can use a program to link them together then you can compress it so it will work again. I do this a lot to get rid of intros. Not that I don't want to see intros (which I really don't) but some intros are written for PAL machines only and really look like crap on NTSC. However, the game may play find in NTSC.
BTW, always test the game you save before getting rid of the original (if you were thinking about it). One main issue I have is the god awful sound of crackling before the game starts. I try to time my saves right before the music/sound starts so I can avoid that sound. _________________

Great point. I have noticed that as well and tried the same thing you have.

Yeah - that annoying sound problem is the only thing to look out for.
BTW - Action REplay also has a POKE finder and is very useful. It also has a great Sprite Killer that works on most of the old games.
The screen editor is fun too. You can freeze a game such as Jet Set Willy or Manic Miner, edit the room by deleting platforms or building some more, and then restart the game to play with what you designed.
The Sprite Editor is also fab. You can save sprites from one game and load them into another. Great fun.
I code using the built in monitor. It's what I use for my crazy hacks.

Thanks guys, I'm a convert! Today was a day of firsts as 1.7b seemed to have freezer issues on the 1541u so I went ahead and (with fingers crossed) successfully installed 2.4. Even made a video of it in case I bricked it and needed proof. Might post it later. I didn't have any sound issues either when I froze a random test program (Batman), but I only tested it on this game so far. This will definitely help me complete some of my favorite games.
The other "first" was I played my first EasyFlash game Project Firestart. Looking forward to playing with the poke and sprite functionality as well. It's already been a good Super Bowl day and it's only 6:35 am! _________________

Thanks,so far so good. BTW, what's the name of the programs that combines and compresses the files when I need it? _________________

Ok, now I'm bringing up this topic once again for what I think (hope) is a simple question. I tryed using Pokefinder in the Action Replay, and am a little confused about one of the steps..
Code:
"Load up and run your game. When play starts note how many
lives you begin with and press the Freeze Button.
2) Select POKEFINDER. You will be asked 'HOW MANY LIVES NOW?'
- enter the number of lives you started with. Pokefinder will
now analyze the memory and display a list of possible pokes.
Usually there will be many of these, so you will be prompted
to 'LOSE A LIFE AND REFREEZE'.
3) Restart the game and continue to play until you lose a life.
Make sure that you lose ONE LIFE ONLY. Wait for any "death
sequence" to complete. When play resumes, press the Freeze
Button.
In step 3 it says to restart. After it tells me to lose a life and refreeze, I can't find the key to back out of the Action Replay and get back in the game. _________________

Not yet, thanks for asking. When I tryed last night, I would freeze, run Pokefinder, hit F3, lose a life, and refreeze again. Upon doing that, I only got the main menu and hitting Pokefinder again gave me an "aborted" message. Remember, you're dealing with a life long Epyx Fastloader here so this all brand new territory.. What am I overlooking this time? _________________

You're overlooking nothing and doing it correctly. Sometime the ARC just cant find anything and so it aborts. Lose another life and try again. There's also the possibility that the game counts zero as being 1 life, which means that when you have 3 lives it is in fact at the count of 2. Very confusing, but you'll get it after a while.
If you get stuck for pokes, just drop me a line and I'll assist _________________
My suggestion would be to stop wasting your time and simply download a trained version.
My suggestion is to learn something new and not just give up and download a trainer. Try it for yourself; start learning how to manipulate code; it's how I started producing crazy hacks _________________

Precisely. I plan on going into the sprite menu once I get this mastered. I'll try again tonight. Also, Ahoy! magazine ML programs have no trainers. _________________
