Hello, I am a fairly new Commodore user and have gone through multiple products trying to get them to work and they all keep having problems. I finally bought a mint condition 1571 and 128 since my 3 64's all failed in some way or another (mainly disk drive troubles).

So, I have a 128 hooked up with a 1571 disk drive. There are 2 problems I am having.

1. When I boot up the computer to 128 mode, all is well. If I try to boot into 64 mode, I get the following error when I boot using the Commodore key or by typing GO64:

?OUT OF MEMORY ERROR IN 0
READY.
(blinking cursor)

If I type LIST, I get all sorts of jargon in lowercase.
If I try to load a disk I can get the directory but if I try to load anything, I get this error:

?OUT OF MEMORY ERROR
READY.

2. If I boot with an Epyx Fastload cart, it boots right into C64 mode with no problems to Commodore 64 Basic V2 mode with 38911 basic bytes free.

And again here, the menu loads properly. I can load a game (that has confirmed to work on a 1541 drive and/or C64) and the disk loads. Every single disk I try (which has been about 10 different ones), I get to the loading process and it crashes at some point. For example, the loading completes and I am able to type RUN. It is at this point where problems begin to occur. The title screen appears and all of the sudden an error occurs at that point.

I am trying to figure out if this is the 1571, the disk drive, or both? I am also wondering if there are simple solutions? It's apparent the drive works since it is loading the menu properly. It's getting past there to program execution that is failing.

ANY HELP appreciated so much!

John

I have done some tests using the 1571 on a C64 and the C128 on a 1541. It now appears the 1571 drive works fine and it's the 128 giving me the trouble. A program that loaded fine off of the 1571 on a C64 but crashed when I loaded it on the 128. As stated above, the 128 is also having trouble with the 64 mode. What would you suggest I do now since we know it's the C128 and not the drive!!!

Bad ram in the first 64k bank.

If you can make a dead test cart it will find which ram is bad for you.
(For info, just search the forum)
