Still no improvement in my score. Not only that but I've started routinely losing at least one life on screen 4. I can't even get past level 6 anymore. And today I actually lost one on screen 1 - twice! I haven't done that since the first couple of games I played when I first bought the damn thing. After playing Boulderdash for years, back in the day, I am now starting to hate it. Maybe this retro game compo isn't such a hot idea or maybe I should only play ones I've never played before... but legally own. Wink

Or maybe this mini-rant will change my luck. Well, back at I suppose.

I need to get a score in before this weekend but I'm just flabbergasted by the concept of 12,000 points. Dayum. I was feeling good about getting 1200.

To do level 4, 'Butterflies', do this and you absolutely can't fail. Go to the top of each butterfly cell and place a rock in line vertically with the right part of the cell, so it's going to be above the butterfly as it's climbing upscreen in it's little cell (you'll probably have to do some shoving to get it there.) Make sure the boulder is just one earth-block away from cell. Then it's just a case of running to the left when the butterfly is at the bottom of it's cell and BANG! Nine diamonds. Do it with every butterfly. The alternative is running around in a panic all over the place with a butterfly on your ass.

There's no real strategy for level 6, 'Firefly Dens', just make sure you kill each firefly after you've released it before letting more out - otherwise it'll turn into panic stations again.

Yeah, thanks but I played this thing back when it came out so I know how to do these levels. I think I got up to M back in the day. It's just that I can't do it NOW. It's making me a bit flustered. Maybe it's time to get that hookup dealie for my joystick.

And on level 6/F, I don't usually try to kill them, I try to trap them. I usually don't go after the second four diamonds either. It's not worth the risk but occasionaly I do. It's just that I'm not having much luck with it these days. Smile

The funny thing is, this isn't how i used to do this level back in the days. I just discovered this technique while i was playing for a score in this competition, and it rocks! (If you'll excuse the pun.)

You should kill fireflies - they're a pest. Trapping's too good for 'em. Wink

Ina, I think that cave N is a real bugger.

See if this helps. Run across the top of the Butterly cells releasing three or four of them. They'll chase you. Run above the fireflies and come down under the rightmost boulder (but only leave a small drop for the boulder). The first butterfly will appear and drop a boulder on it's head by running right. From here on I only use the diamonds generated from killing a butterfly to destroy the other butterflies. Releasing the fireflies on this level causes mayhem - they seem to come in from everywhere at the most unexpected time.

I hope that helps you (but just not enough to beat me Wink ).

I'd have liked another week myself. After my dismal peformance I was reluctant to try it again. With another week I might have given it another shot. Still I suck at Boulderdash.
