Thats a cool one! Smile

Does anybody know if you have to scroll in the Amiga and PC version or if there's a way to enter the spell code manually?
Also, what do you think of the Bard's Tale's remake, "Devil Whiskey": http://www.devilwhiskey.com/ ?

I used another cheat on BT3. You could enter the mad god's dungeon in Skara Brae, teleport down two levels (if I recall), go to Brilhasti Ap Tarj's small level, and kill him as many times as you want (going through the dungeon once again after he's dead). With sufficiently high level characters you can do this easily and gain much experience.

I used this one, and discovered that if you take level 1 characters with your party to do this before you've taken them to the guild, they get a massive amount of experience.

Can't remember. I suspect you had to keep them alive, or at least ressurest them before Brilhasti died.

It wasn't that difficult to do, tho, I remember re-doing my entire party like this as I got to world 1 (I remember a big leap in difficulty going to the first world, and the characters I got like this were about twice as powerful as the ones I had by the time I'd beaten Brilhasti for the first time); making new spellcasters of types that I hadn't previously gotten; and even making an entire party of rogues so I could cheap one of the bosses by hiding in shadows and critically hitting him.

Definitely have to give a double thumbs up for any celebratory Bard's Tale thread. But rather than become nostalgically overwhelmed and break out into song, instead I thought I'd link to a thread where I basically post a "this is your life" Bard's Tale testimonial. Very Happy

http://www.lemon64.com/forum/v...bards+tale

A couple of more things:

A) The closest gameplay to those games in a modern day format for me would probably be an indie projected interestingly entitled "Devil Whiskey", which is basically a tribute to the Bard's Tale legacy using a modern engine.

B) If only we would really see a Bard's Tale IV - I'm guessing the petition for it still exists on the 'net. Shame that the InXile Bard's Tale console game was so different in style and philosophy (still fun, but lacking the longevity and charm of the originals.)

C) I also used the infinite murder of Brilhasti Ap Tarj as a short cut to experience! Killing him the first time just wasn't enough (since he killed my party a few times before I finally did him in.)

D) Hamburger!

Cheers
RobB

Just the first one. And it was rewritten a bit to help; static images instead of animations with the main program being one load, and you only load each dungeon level in (takes a few seconds for each). So it wasn't THAT painful unless you rapidly switched levels frequently.

Interesting. Do you know if a d64 file of this 'rewritten' BT1 version exists for download?

It's because of the in-game slow and obtrusive disk accesses that I prefer the tape version when playing under emulation. The tape version holds everything in memory so the game is always responsive.

Of course, compromises had to be made so static graphics were used and the music was primative, but there were also a number of improvements that were unique to the tape version:
* darkness was better handled. The player could 'feel' his way around by walking into walls without the annoying 'ouch' delay. Instead, the wall or door ahead would briefly display for one raster frame.
* spinners didn't spin your compass so navigation was slightly easier
Loading levels from tape on emulators is painless as the emulator speed can easily be speeded up.

I don't believe so... I just ARed the main file when I got my disk drive and loaded the levels from tape after that. Before the time I got my hands on a BT1 disk original... from the US and discovered it didn't load here. Typical. BT2 and BT3 were fine, mind you Rolling Eyes

I may be a Bards Tale fanatic Very Happy I played all the games on Com64 and replayed them again and again, then again when I got my Amiga, and again on PC, then again when the emulators came out. I still got the game boxes somewhere. So I think I qualify, don't you? Wink

did anyone get along in bt3 without a cheat? Smile you've got to have very high ranking spellcasters there and the first levels (in the ruins) are tough, too. On the other hand, you've got great wizards, if you've played BT2.

Yeah, the AMIGA VERSION is pain in my big butt Smile because you have to scroll down each time a spell is to be cast.

yes me bought devil whisky but it's too hard, and it lacks the jolly atmosphere of bards tale...but that may be just me...did any of you enjoy devil whiskey?

the newer "bard's tale" pc game has absolutely nothing to do with the old games, it seems just a ripoff. Although it may be a fine game in itself, it doesn't carry the Bards Tale legacy i think.

So, any one know of a newer bt style game?? Dragon Wars is a little bit like those games but it's very dissimilar.
or any games which come close to the genius those old games like ar, ultima or bards tale showed? I dont like any newer RPG games, oblivion or such are a lot less likeale, though i must admit that the old elder scrolls and "might and magic" games were fine. But are there any new games who are as nice as the old school BT series? I hated the newer Ultima games like UO too. Martian Dreams and Underworld were good, though. Very Happy

Here this thread http://www.gamespite.net/talki...hp?t=10761 is a cute idea: playing the game and inventing and telling a story about it, can we Bards Tale fanatics do some thread like it, too? Maybe sharing saved games?

SORRY for my spamalot but my Bards tale mood is waxing again and I think I'll play it right along! See you Smile

How do i create characters on c64 again? I seem to have lost it Smile

there's maze master.

edit: Oh you said newer games... Wizardry 8 is great. There's a RPG series on DS that has you map a dungeon old school style on a new school touch screen Etrian Odyssey, though I've yet to actually play these ones.

I have recently (since my last post in this thread over a year ago) played (and finished) a bard's tale inspired game called Warrior's Tale for the PC (windows).

http://www.warriorstale.blogspot.com/

It is buggy in places, but I do think it captures the essence of the first game.

Check out the following web site...

http://www.bardstaleonline.com/

Very nice info on the games, but there are no dungeon maps. If anyone has any for BT3, please let me know. I mapped the game many years ago and my maps are incomplete. Thanks!

The adventures continue if you have Amiga with the Bard's Tale Construction Kit. There is also a small start up story with it as well. Also by using Dpaint one could created their own graphics.

That would be cool. Make your own monsters? Or scenery?

Also, do you have any maps?

On this site are maps, but I can't say if they are complete or not.

If you are registered at UG, there's most definitely a scan of the official cluebook around.

Thanks, those are both good web sites. Just curious, does anyone have a version that doesn't need the code wheel? I have the wheel, but would be nice not to have to use it.

I am going to play it on my C64 now! Very Happy

Hi guys. I found my Bard's Tale I Dungeon Disk from 2 years ago that had some modifications done to it.

I wanted to share it.
http://www.mediafire.com/?r431dadh389gpr1

Now, if you're bored, I would encourage you to use this "DUNGEON" disk and do some exploring on Mangar's Tower level 5 and see if you don't find something different...

I still have nightmares of me and two friends staying up all night playing BT2 on the Amiga, fighting slaymakers that summons slayers to level up faster.

Hi all. I'm new to the forum but have been lurking for a while Smile

I haven't played Bards Tale for at least 15 maybe 20 years but thought I'd post this up incase anyone's interested. Skara Brae is just down the road from where I now live and is a large neolithic ruins.
