very nice port across, about time. i had this before the C64 version which incidentally KS2 was my first C64 game purchase.
not a criticism at all, but i'm pretty much certain the stormy clouds went from white to dark grey on the C16, but that's the only minor change i've noticed.
all except for the lack of a competitive 2-player mode, i always considered the C16 version to be the more enjoyable game imho.
2 thumbs up
as better versions go, how about BMX Racers & Tom Thumb next? _________________ |

Nice.
How about Gullwing Falcon or Big Mac.
Gullwing Falcon is an excellent shooter only available for C16/+4 and the C16 version of Big Mac is way better than the already existing C64 version. |

not just Big Mac, but it's excellent sequel Mr Puniverse (big mac 2) also unavailable on any other machine. had me hooked for many months _________________ |

Tom Thumb would indeed be great to have on the C64. I was always amazed how a game as huge as this (something like 160 screens IIRC) could fit into the 16kb of my C116. |

Most excellent! The only differences I can see are the storm clouds as was said already, and the audio obviously being new! Other than that, perfect! (I miss the C16 music though, bad as it was, and the sound effects!) |

yeah that's true, same tune but different. i've just compared the 2, and i gotta say i like them on an equal par, even with the C16's inferior TED chip it was one of the best ditties for that machine _________________

An option to choose emulated TED music would been the bonus killer.
What about "Tutti Frutti" on the C64? _________________ the C64 - the most outstanding example of the magic of low tech art |

of course, how could i forget that?
good idea to emulate the TED chip.
all games worthy of conversion:
Autozone (Players) - kinda like moonbuggy but far more challenging.
Big Mac (Mastertronic) - it just looked and played better.
BMX Racers (Mastertronic) - totally different game to the C64 version. collect all the flags and fuel. jump the ramps. psses all over the C64 version.
Gullwing Falcon (Gremlin Graphics) - as Retroplay says.
Monty On The Run/Auf Weidershen Monty (Gremlin Graphics) - no puzzles, all out stonking platformer, only goal is to find all the coins)
Mr Puniverse aka Big Mac 2 (Mastertronic) - a multiscreen platformer, same crushers. enemies. collect all the coins. never released on any other format. even better than the original.
Timeslip (English Software) - good grx. another strange original blaster
Tom Thumb (Anirog) - way superior to the C64 version in every way and one of the C16's finest releases.
Tutti Frutti (Mastertronic) - Mr Do & Pengo in one game.
Xzap (Commodore) - came with the C16 starter pack. lame graphics and sound (yet atmospheric) but totally original style shooter. sadly unavailable for the C64.
these are just some of the games i can think of. i'm not being biased, there's a load of bad conversions on the C16 such as Saboteur
plus4 version was identical to the C64 version though _________________

Mr Puniverse was always an odd one...the original game has a C64 and C16 version, so why release the sequel on C16 only? Maybe the C64 version of Big Mac just wasn't very good? I can't remember, I've played the C16 one more.
It's interesting though that apart from the clouds, the colours for Kikstart are spot-on...it was never graphically impressive, but I wonder if there was a reason it was so basic? Was it programmed on a C64 first, then ported?
EDIT: On this point:
http://www.lemon64.com/games/details.php?ID=2786
Just for completeness. (Also the programmer of this was Tony Kelly, who also programmed Big Mac on the C64 and, judging by the big letters "T K" on the screenshot above, on the C16 as well) |

not the best choice of game to be introduced to the C16
i never understood why Mr Puniverse was never released on the C64. but perhaps the reason is because TK was more successful programming a better C16 version of Big Mac and was more easily able to produce a sequel from the same code, maybe he tried and failed with a playable C64 version, i'm not sure.
i remember feeling amazingly disappointed with C64 Big Mac, and especially C64 Tom Thumb by Udo Gertz (great C16 coder but not-so on the C64). i always imagined they would be better games until i finally played them, as well as others. lol i'd be interested to see these games ported across and see how they fair. _________________ |

Great stuff!
Although it can't compete with II, I actually prefer this to C64's version of Kikstart; although basic, I find it more playbale and fun for some reason. _________________ |

Agreed. C64 Kikstart 1 is basically Kikstart 2 without the speedometer, which really brings it down. And a few extra thingies, of course, but that's the main one. I always loved the C16 version, never liked the C64 one.
I remember Zzap! 64 once had a C16 supplement and said that the C16 version of...something...was better than the C64 version. One of Jeff Minter's games, that's all I remember...while on the subject of "C16 games better than the C64 version".
Jetbrix is probably still my fave C16 game...but only by a whisper. Plenty of great games for the machine! |

Just remembered that the C16 version of Squirm also is better than the C64 version.
Also one of the really good C16 games around. |

ooh i will do, but there's at least a couple up there in my list i can't decide on. i'll get back on that
Jetbrix (Gremlin Graphics) i was going to mention that, should've mentioned it but didn't for some reason. it's such an addictive game. never seen it for the C64. good choice.
also Squrm, i didn't mention it not really beacuse it's already on the C64, while i think the C16 version is again superior. i wasn't sure whether it would be worth it as it's from such an old unoriginal genre. i haven't played it in a while either. _________________

i've tried contacting cosine, but there seems to be no email link or forum to put forward any suggestions
the main 3 games has to be Mr Puniverse (Big Mac 2), BMX Racers and Tom Thumb.
but then there's those others which the C64 has also missed out on _________________ |

Can't say I've ever played the C64 version, but the C16 version was great!

Mr Puniverse is the only one of those I'd agree with, so it goes to show, really! But any addition to the C64 lineup is good. |

ok thanks, i've emailed the cosine team with my suggestions
Gurt. the C64 needs Tom Thumb16, and the C64 version of BMX Racers was also terrible _________________ |

I always preferred the c16 version of Trailblazer as well. I think the c16 was Sean Southern's native platform at the time, and he branched to the c64 and beyond.
I used to love Mr Puniverse and Finders Keepers, the c16 version of FK is my favourite. For those other MrP lovers, you may be interested in this... http://www.gb64.com/game.php?i...18&h=0 |
