Well actually a Pioneer not JVC but still I quite fancy a Laserdisc player. There is something really magical about the whirring hum of a Laserdisc player compared to the rubbish noise of a DVD drive (if you're lucky it's a low volume boring whoosh, if it's that original Xbox 360 welcome to hair dryer decibel testing!)

Only problem is the films, firstly they will never look as good as via my PC's DVD drive on my projector and secondly I have run out of films I can be bothered to sit through entirely without getting bored and distracted and ending up on UG or ebay etc Laughing

Maybe nostalgia is too good for its own good Very Happy

Actually if they have the interface (LANC?) to control it from a PC then yes you can buy the Laserdisc game. I can't remember which computer they did this for (Amiga? PC? was 3.5" floppy disk for the control program anyway). Was £99.99 including arcade laserdisc in the late 80s Very Happy

The higher end Pioneers all have this control interface anyway, was meant for video edit control for small time cable TV stations etc.

Laughing

The issue is not the tech, I absolutely adore the tech from the glowing blue displays to the whirring gentle hum the players make. It sounds cool and the huge laserdiscs themselves are also cool, still have about 10 laserdisc films from the 80s.

However those two issues are kind of important (image quality via non digital input to projector and I have recently got bored because I've been off work due to a car crash since Xmas so burned through all my films I ever liked even once). Sound should be OK I use COAX AC3 connection for PC anyway to the 5.1 amp.

Now should I get the 925 laserdisc only player (best in the business I believe) or the DVL909 combi player with the multiregion DVD facility? hmmmm Very Happy

Or for real 70s chic I can look for one of them top loading Sony/Philips machines.

Neither, both of those options are just above average at their best, if you want to get absolutely everything out of the format (and have some spare money to burn) go for Pioneer's japan only high-end models like X0 or X9. I admit they are complete overkill for random watching but nevertheless the best you can get.

Heh, sounds familiar: I have VHS and Beta decks plus LD player in my living room paired with 50" plasma while CED and VHD players are in my "gotta get" list Smile

I've picked up a few Betamax machines in my time (for a few quid to boot) but there was one Sony model (SL9?) which I bought three of for a quid each and I made a bomb on them. I did a test recording using straight RF of Futureworld and boy was it pin sharp, the slow motion and frame advance too, even had stereo sound.

I've actually still got the SVHS video recorder I bought in 1996, pretty tasty machine but options in the 90s for the input signal was never quite up to the standard of what the machine could do. I wonder if I can find my 4 SVHS tapes (also JOOVKE btw Laughing)

@Romppainen, not got money to burn Razz Has to be for sale on ebay UK as the postage would cost more than posting myself overseas to collect it Laughing Unless those models have VGA output @ 30khz would not improve the picture quality noticeably as 15khz signals on a projector really do not look good. Double sided would be nice but yeah as long as it works and is reasonably cheap I don't mind.

There are some crazy ass auctions up on ebay mind, one guy wants 10,000 bucks for his entire LD collection (think it's 1800 discs) but man it would be cool to have that many Laserdiscs.

Is it possible to burn a Laserdisc? Now that wouldn't be just cool it would be sub zero!!
