Hi,
I've recently purchased the T2 edition of the C64, with C2N datasette unit, 2 joysticks and a few games but with no manuals except for a "Quick Set-Up Guide" for the unit. I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice so I can have years of trouble-free gaming.
First, I am having a bit of trouble identifying my unit. The plastic name plate on the bottom right-hand corner says it's a "Commodore 64", but the box and every label on the unit says it's a C64. Can anyone shed any light?
Second, I am having sound problems. Me and my dad tried it on the new-ish TV in our kitchen, and the switch had to be set to "L" (even though every game says it should be set to "H"), otherwise I got static. And the sound I got from "L" was quiet and very poor. Does anyone know how I can remedy this? Is it just because I used a new TV with a different speaker system than the Commodore was designed for?
Lastly, saving data. The insert for "Goblin Towers" informs me I will need to use blank tapes to save my progress in-game; how do you save the data and how do you re-load it later on? I was also thinking of getting the Office-style Suite for the Commodore, and was wondering if the same principal was used for saving documents as is used to save game progress.
Many thanks in advance for you time,
Chris |

Hi and welcome to the forum It's an Commodore C64C in that T2 package of yours. Do you also have the T2 cartridge which should come with that specific lot? |

First - The C64 and Commodore 64 are the same thing. There was two models manufactured during its lifetime - one looked like a breadbin and the other looked a bit more modern!
Second - Pass!
Third - All you have to do is buy a blank tape (like a C90) and the game will prompt you when to put it in the datasette unit and press record or play. _________________ |

Is the C90 a special Commodore tape? Or can you get an ordinary audio tape? _________________ |

It's any cassette really (well, ones that aren't copy-protected (well, you can get around that with some sellotape )): C90 refers to a 90 minute (chrome?) tape, but any kind will do... _________________ "If you think that the work security systems still overlook 'pr0n' you're an idiot." |

Here's a site that I think is really good:
http://emulazione.multiplayer....c64eng.htm
When you go to the "All Commodore 64 versoins" page, mine's the 4th one down; the Series 3 model. But I really like the Series 2, that's the one I would get if I had the choice; but that gold one, *low whistle*...
Series 1 reminds me of a chocolate bar, lol! It looks WELL ugly in that colour!
Soon to be my pride and joy! The Series 3
Wouldn't mind having one of these babies! The SX-64, "portable" lol
Holy sh1t, that's HUGE! The PET-64
Take a look at the C65 prototype, *low whistle*... _________________

I wouldn't get any tape longer than 60 minutes. The longer the tape, the thinner the tape. The sorter, thicker tape will last longer. |

And it will stretch less in use, too. |

I have 3 SX-64s.
Theyre pretty cool, but I prefer my c128 setup.
I also have a screen from one sitting here (I parted down a dead SX64 for someone in the eastern states that they bought here) and they didnt want the screen.
Dunno if it works - Ill have to figure out how to put a signal into it Might be cool for my supergun |

Is the C64C just the same as a 64 and a C64? Or is it better in some way? _________________

The c64c was just the later model commodore 64 with a slightly different sound chip and a smaller mother board as well as more modern case. Despite these differences its still just a commodore 64 but perhaps a little more reliable than the early model. _________________ NES fan boys piss me off. |

I thought as much. Maybe if I come to you to get it and it sits with me on the plane. Oh well, maybe in a few years... _________________ |

It would have to have it's own seat and travel under the name "Joe Pillow".

I prefer the brown 64 over the slimmer white C64.
The older unit is much easier to modify.
Not sure of the claims of reliability differences.
My 64 from 1984 has 1000s of hours of usage, with no problems to date. |

True, the breadbin C64 is an all time classic. I would always go for that one myself, and it's the only time I would ever call anything brown gorgeous. The only machine that tops the C64 for style IMO is the VIC20's lovely cream colour (and also my first computer), although I would love a C64 in C16 case. C64 blue screen of course will always win best boot screen award. Still reminds me of the first time I switched it on and loaded Tapper. _________________ 2 * 3 * 3 * 37 : The prime factorization of The Beast |

@Wally
Yeah, I got myself one of these babies, a Testpilot package in '89 which included a C64c, a C2N, joystick and the following tape games: Crazy Cars, F15 Strike Eagle, Silent Service, SoloFlight & Acrojet.
Costed nearly €250 at the time lol. _________________ |

I also remember when I first loaded 'Tapper'. I bought it on cassette and had hours and hours of fun with that game. The graphics for this game seemed so great back then.
But the first ever C64 game that I bought and spent hours at was 'Monty Mole' by Gremlin Graphics. I also remember spending lots of time playing 'Loco', 'Cops & Robbers', 'Pitstop II' and I had a heap of fun playing doubles with 'Kikstart' with my best friend in grade 9.
I guess kids who were my age back then who are currently playing game play 'Halo', 'GTA' etc. But it's like the old saying goes, you don't have anymore fun nowadays with games just because they've got flashy graphics and sound, you still had as much fun back then with you're C64 and it's games. The newskool just don't get it.
