WinVice 2.4.4 C64 [x64.exe] With programmable buttons - June 7, 2013 v.93
(Programmable gamepad button code by dink @ lemon64)
Whats the purpose of this?
1 - It enables the use of a D-Pad on a gamepad which the D-Pad
wont work in Vice (without Joy2Key or some other clever hack).
2 - It gives you the ability to program the extra buttons on your gamepad.
3 - Temporarily disables your screensaver while Vice is running in the
foreground.
...If you can imagine how frustrating it is to be playing a game using a
gamepad/joystick and the screensaver kicks in...
-- Now includes the SpeedySL mod! Check the txt file in the .zip for info how-to enable/use it (or disable it) --
SpeedySL video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBMPFZzo99g
Here are the programmable button options:
Pause - this is self explanitory..
Press "space" - games like Gryzor, Skyshark..etc. that use
"space" as a second fire button can be played 100%
via joystick/gamepad!! Or get past an intro screen.
Warpmode - toggle Warpmode on/off to get past those annoying
disk loads, intros or slow parts.
Swap Ports - This will swap Joy Port1 -> port2 / Port2 -> port1
Enable D-Pad - some gamepads have a D-Pad which don't work in
Vice. Now you can make this work without stupid
hacks (joy2key..etc.)
QuickSaveState - Save a snapshot of a game or something (do this before you think
you're gonna die, or after you've achieved something big)
QuickLoadState - Re-load the snapshot of the game (do this after you die
QuickSaveStateUndo - So, you saved the state after you died? (woops!) Use This to go back to the previous one.
Other assignable keys, such as Shift, Return, C=, F-Keys & A-Z can be
assigned starting with version .5!
The update (src diffs incl.) is available @

Recent news regarding this project as of June 15, 2012:
- Added a new feature, Alt-8 or Alt-T (attach disk or tape image) will now bring up the contents of the currently attached disk or tape - even if it was drag 'n dropped onto X64! I will post a link as soon as a bit of testing has been done to make sure things are bug-free (as possible).
best regards & happy '64-ing,

Why don't you contribute your code to the main VICE project? |

Good question.
Also can someone compile for 64 bits? _________________ ---

NLS - I'm afraid a 64bit port of this won't be possible - at this time anyways! Sorry!

Thanks. But I don't need to. The normal VICE compiled with SDL-ui already has those features to program your gamepad built in |

NLS: I don't have a 64bit machine to compile it on, nor do I have a 64bit compiler. If you get these set up & regular 64bit Vice to compile, perhaps I can assist you in patching/compiling this version for 64bit. Sorry I can't be of more help (or have an easy answer)!

Clear.
That said, don't you think it is time you have an x64 machine? _________________ ---

I'm putting the finishing touches on something my friends call "speedy-sl"-mod for WinVice. This new mod will get you from autostarting or drag'n'dropping a .d64 onto vice to the title or crack-intro on most games in 1-2 seconds or less (a few take a little bit longer, but a majority benefits from this)
Heres some average stats, using my ancient pentium4 pc:
(this version of DZ Has no crack-tro)
DropZone w/TDE On & Handle TDE @ Autostart: 7 seconds to titlescreen
DropZone w/TDE On & Handle TDE @ Autostart & speedy-sl mod: 1 second
Xenon w/TDE On & Handle TDE @ Autostart: 11 seconds to crack-intro
Xenon w/TDE On & Handle TDE @ Autostart & speedy-sl mod: >1 second
Xevious w/TDE On & Handle TDE @ Autostart: 5 seconds to crack-intro
Xevious w/TDE On & Handle TDE @ Autostart & speedy-sl mod: >1 second
Centipede w/TDE On & Handle TDE @ Autostart: 6 seconds to crack-intro
Centipede w/TDE On & Handle TDE @ Autostart & speedy-sl mod: 1.5 seconds
Buggy Boy w/TDE On & Handle TDE @ Autostart: 13 seconds to crack-intro
Buggy Boy w/TDE On & Handle TDE @ Autostart & speedy-sl mod: 2 seconds
Most games that take 5-12 seconds to load & unpack to crack-tro or titlescreen now load in 1-2 seconds.
I've been working on this for the past 2 days and now is the time for some good rest I have to do a little bit of play testing to make sure there are no bugs (tomorow) and then I'll post some links
The trick I used is rather simple, but the results are amazing - it wouldn't be hard to port to the other os's! Stay tuned for an explanation/.exe&code! |

Thanks for the update Dink, will they not add your speedy load to the main project?
Oh, would you be able to improve the volume of the drive sound emulation , too quite even at full blast at the moment. |

McLane: regarding the speedysl mod - I would have to get it working across all of the platforms to submit it to the main vice code, and thats a bit out of my league at the moment.
Regards to the drive sound volume, I made an experimental test version of vice which has the ability to set the volume of the drive sounds, download it here: http://sharesend.com/6neuy
After copying the new x64.exe to your vice folder, run it, then exit it after it gets to the ready prompt - this will update your vice.ini file. now, edit vice.ini and search for this:
DriveSoundEmulationVolume=1
Try changing it to 5 or 10 (which seems quite loud here), or any number that works for you, and re-load x64.exe.

Dink, you are a star..
Sound volume 4 seems about right for me, maybe 5..
Thank you for that patch up..
I'm going to ask this but I think I already have a fair guess at the answer either way. These mods you have done are all alter the ini file, I presume they are not in the GUI itself because you are not a GUI person (most authors hate GUI changes) or you are not permitted to alter the GUI under some GPL or whatever clause?
Whatever he answer THANK YOU...
This 51yr old feels likes he's back in the day with Fast Hack'em running on 2 drives being a very naughty boy
The old click of the drive mech just makes it spot on.. |

McLane: I'm glad it worked out for ya! You know, for me its almost the same way, hacking/modifying VICE is just as exciting and fun as 20+ years ago when I had my real c64 opened up and was hacking various hardware mods to the machine
I'm not fluent enough in gui programming to make gui options for the changes/mods I've made, hopefully one day I will meet someone to collaborate with! Until then, we must edit vice.ini.. Anyone from back in the C64 days should be able to handle that, I hope!
Anyways - thanks for the nice comments!

I updated the download link in the top post, it now includes a feature to let you change the volume of the drive sounds - the default setting was barely audible for some people, be sure to check the dox (feature #4) for how-to info.
