I may get the ball rolling on this one:
298,140 (round 9)
http://spazioinwind.libero.it/cabi/wimboc.bmp
(copy and paste the link)
After I died I used a continue-play to check the supposed bug in the ending, and I found that it's all OK: after you kill the dragon ALL YOUR GOLD LEFT IS CONVERTED TO POINTS (no neverending score growth, then, Toggle). Thus my score on that (ILLEGAL) game was nearly double than the former, for just a couple of levels!
I suggest you all to check the map at web.externet.hu/c64 as it shows many of the tricks/hidden spots of the game.
I remind you all also that if you waggle the joystick (for me it's the keyboard, but anyway) when you get a hidden coin, chances are you'll get 68 gold instead of the usual 3 or 4.

well I still think it's a cool platformer alright.
I attended in the llamacompetition when they were playing wonderboy in monsterland (the mame version) and it was pretty much fun competing! _________________ |

As I said before, I find it absolutely lovely .
BTW Matt, if you wish the Scorelord pages to be updated with the Lemon scores, send an e-mail to Gordon with the top 3 scores, their name and nationality: in the past year I did so, otherwise it's unlikely the lazy guy passes information to the Almighty One. I don't think that El Gordo will be much pleased with the Thrust scores though... _________________

First try is around 230,000 points. Now I realise how good a conversion this game is, as I have never played the C64 version while I knew the game inside out. It's amazing all the coins are in the same places as they are in the original. |

Here is my first and final attempt:
My god, I hate this game!!
Not to offend the fans of WiM, but it is IMO totally not suited for this compo. There is no skill involved. Just wonder along, picking up coins and stuff. When you get the sword, the boots, the shield and the armour, you're practically immortal. The bosses are ridiculous. Just stand still and press fire a couple of hundred times and they'll die. Where's the fun in that?
Normally games get harder the further you get. This is just the opposite.
I don't think I have ever completed a game in my first try before. To me that indicates that the game is too easy.
It was a bore to complete, it loaded a zillion times(thx for the alt+f3 tip, SLF), and I'm not doing it again just to find a few extra coins somewhere to boost my score.
I'm looking forward to next month. |

You seem to be sort of a natural in this game.
Did you notice that in the beginning you have to turn OFF the trainers? (they're on by default).
I ask because it seems quite strange to me that you finished the game on your first go, with your revival medicine left, without any other object in the inventory (shouldn't the red ruby be there? Not sure about that) and with all ten hearts of energy (how did you get those?).
Don't get me wrong, hannibal, you know I fully trust you, I'm just awestruck by your performance.
Yours sincerely,
Supreme Lemon Fluke
BTW I played the game for quite some time in the past, and I never completed without continue-plays (just got near the end) and I never got all ten hearts (just 8 or 9). I had some reservations on the competition-suitedness of it, but being so fun to me I voted for it nonetheless. Sorry if you or other people didn't enjoy it. _________________

I did turn off the default trainer. I asked myself the same question since I couldn't believe how easy it was. I did lose energy early on and had to buy some at the medic's twice (I was down to one heart), but later I hardly lost any (only when walking on fire). The last couple of bosses walked right through me and nothing happened?!? I just thought it was the armour that did it, but perhaps this isn't how it ought to be?
The last battle with the dragon I only lost two hearts out of ten.
One thing though: At the end of some levels (perhaps all, I didn't pay much attention) my energy was almost fully restored. Could that be some cheat option I didn't turn off?
I don't know what I did to get all ten hearts. The number just increased throughout the game. At one point I picked up three big hearts but I think I already had all ten.
I never found a ruby. I found lots of gauntlets and helmets but they dissappeared after a while.

I normally suck at this type of games. For instance, I have never completed Giana Sisters in 100+ tries. Actually, I can't recall completing any platform games at all. |

My knowledge of the game is not so deep, so perhaps others (Toggle?) could help.
There is one built-in cheat that I mentioned in the voting thread, that involves getting on a roof top in Baraboro village and hitting with the sword a wall: this way you get all ten hearts and invincibility. You obviously didn't do that, as you still lost some energy after that.
As far as I know, the armour just lowers the energy loss when you're hit. Strange that the monsters near the end of the game just walked through you while nothing happened. Don't know why.
At the end of each round (not each load) some of your energy DOES get replenished, that is definitely not a bug or a cheat.
AFAIK the big hearts fully replenish your energy, but don't give you extra hearts.
I noticed that getting a harp gives you one more heart, can anybody confirm this?
In the game there are places where you meet people who help you: they give you IIRC a letter, a flute, an eel, the hero's emblem and in the end a red ruby which weakens the dragon (you obviously didn't need that )
Congratulations on your skill, hannibal
You turned off all 4 trainers and still completed the game on your first go. _________________ My top games: 1.Hawkeye, 2.Uridium, 3.Creatures II, 4.Delta, 5.Bubble Bobble, 6.Ikari Warriors, 7.Armalyte, 8.Bionic Commando, 9.Archon, 10.Buggy Boy. |

btw,
how do I grab my screenshots size 320X200, and without that black border like above (and below)? or is that impossible using ccs64?
you'd better check out the difference, in case I didn't make myself very clear:
bad way:
good way:
or should I use a paint proggy to remove the black border? that would sound obvious, ehm, but boring also!
thanks _________________ |

I thought you'd all get a kick out of seeing how appallingly bad I am at this game. There had to be ONE, didn't there
27840
I have to say that this version isn't a patch on, err, ANY other version; whoever wrote the scrolling routine should be ashamed of themselves. Still, time willing, I'll have a few goes at this.
Congrats to everyone whose already completed this! What, less than a week into the compo? And hannibal, ONE GAME???? Niiiiiiiiice. _________________ Hey, you. Dumbass. Yeah, you in the tank. Cosy in there? |

Thanks for the kind words , SLF and Shteev. To be honest I did play it twice last week, just to see what it was people were talking about.(dying both games at the second boss), but I only played one time in the compo.
Though it seems I had my share of beginner's luck, I still feel the gameplay is flawed. Once you get past the first few rounds and start to increase the number of hearts in the life-indicator, it obviously takes a lot more to kill you. This makes the game feel easier in the end than in the beginning.
Props to Toggle for leading the compo by 400.000

Last time i played i was stuck on what is called round 9 (it is still round 3 or 4 though) on the maps listed above. I went to the left, killed the baddie over there and got a feather - but then what? Jumping onto the clouds did only give me some bonus coins and i couald leave the level in any direction.
Any other tips? What is the deal with the shields, armors and other stuff like helmets and gauntlets you get in the course of the game. Is anybody really enjoying this game (hello voters)? |
