i just got a 1541-ii. when powered up the green and red lights stay on and the drive runs continuously i know this could be a faulty 6502 or possibly a bad 251968-03. my first question is are the 251968-03 and the 901229-5 interchangable from a early 1541 if not has any one tried putting a 1541-II drive assembly into a 1541

I think this problem can be caused by many different issues. I had it a while back, and it was due to a weak power supply. Also, a bad DOS ROM can cause it. If you have access to an EPROM programmer, you can program a new one to try.

Other than that, I think you have to start swapping chips one at a time to see what it is. Start with CPU and VIA. Unfortunately, most chips aren't socketed in 1541-II, so it's a big pain in the ass.

First try another PSU. A broken PSU might cause all kind of weird trouble. I had several broken 1541-II PSUs already, so that's a likely issue.

Oge, are the power DIN connectors for the drives hard to find? Should imagine the right DIN would be an easy thing from an electronic supply company like Digikey or Mouser ?
