I have just bought one of these - been after an SD device for ages!

It is plug and play apparently - what will I need to do with it in order to use it? Do I format SD card prior to FAT32? Also do I need to install some form of firmware to the SD card? Looks like one end connects to serial port but not too sure about the other cable?

Firstly, it looks like an SD2/IEC device (http://www.c64-wiki.com/index.php/SD2IEC) - Jim Brain makes a nice version of it that comes highly recommended (and a lot cheaper) at http://store.go4retro.com.

The cyan-green connector plugs into your cassette port, to power the device..

It defaults to device 10.

SD cards should NOT be formatted NTFS.

No idea if you need firmware for it - unlikely, but the wiki link above should help, as a starting point. Ask the vendor, if you can't get it going.
(there may well be later versions of the firmware than that loaded on your device).

Grats on your new toy! I love my uIEC from Mr. Brain.
First you do need to format the SD. FAT32 is fine just NOT NTFC as stated earlier.
There is much information available about interacting with an sd2iec device online,

Oh, someone made exact clones of Shadowolf's old SD2IEC 1.2 boards, they even kept the two front mounting holes which were meant for a different SD socket.

I'd love to see a picture of the bottom of the board - if they kept the mounting holes, they probably also kept the sd2iec logo and the pawprint on there.

The hardware is called "sw2" in sd2iec.

Are these to be avoided then, or should they work just fine? Guess I'm unclear what the differences might be between these and Jim Brains - these work out a bit cheaper I think if you live in the UK (which I do)

If they use an ATmega1284 I see no reason to avoid them. If they use an ATmega644 space is getting a bit tight in there, although I can't say yet when (if?) support for that chip will be dropped completely.

Edit: Seems to be a 644.

I bought Mr. Brains uIEC simply because it was least expensive, available with easily integrated adapters (His daughterboards) and I have had very good experiences with Mr. Brain. The SD2IEC firmware is gnu licensed and open source so is continually being improved. Your device is basically the same type of device. Much like there are many PC's there are many sd2iec devices. As stated earlier if yours has the newest "processor" ATmega 1284 it will last much longer and be upgradable for longer than if it has the "last generation "processor" ATmega644. Either will do the job and be hard at work storing and retrieving your Commie files. it is just the further expansion that may be lacking. Think of it as buying a pc you know it may become obsolete with advances but will still function in the manner it did when you bought it.
