i finally got around to buying a 32x for my megadrive, today it arrived, ok packing rather substandard, but everything ok. now i inspect the unit, rust spots on the connectors, and bits of food spotted on top of unit!! @#$^!!!! not impressed!!!
i bought 20 cassette games for my 64..... packed in plastic, no bubble wrap, most cases stuffed!!!
last of all, bought an amiga 600 keyboard in brand new condition, when i open the package the keyboard is sticky as! closer inspection its covered in what appears to be cola! _________________
I'd contact the seller and explain you want to send them back and explain why. If they don't respond or say no, contact eBay themselves. I've found them to be very good under these kind of circumstances.
I realise it probably doesn't help in this situation, but i refuse to buy anything on ebay now that isn't an actual picture of the item.
I often "Ask the seller a question", Is the box damaged or marked? Does the cassette or inner cover have any handwriting or stickers? Are instructions included? _________________

Just file a complaint, you'll be able to ship it back (at your own expense) and get your money back from PayPal - or give them negative feedback and sell it again with risk of loosing money.
IMHO negative feedback should be used where appropriate.
Give the seller a chance to redeem himself, I have gotten all money back a few times and could keep the goods when I have discovered apparent flaws not stated in the auction.

I wish I could say the same thing. As long as money changes hands and they get their piece of the action, they couldn't care less what happens.
I think the "return the item for a refund" policy is a joke. I didn't pay for a refund of my money minus the cost of return shipping.
Most of the time, if that sort of situation occurs I just write the whole thing off and refrain from future business with that seller. I can't stand reading those e-mails where it says something along the lines of:
Hi there,
Sorry you have this trouble with your purchase. If you want to return the item for a refund, please feel free to kiss my arse.

and if you get a item that is SNAD you can file and go for buyers protection .........even the shipping will be covered so you wont be out anything
the trick i find is to file then escalate then call _________________

I always pack items in the same manner that I'd like to receive them in. This can... put up shipping a little bit, and sadly some people just don't understand that. _________________

... and don't forget, when you're leaving the nasty feedback make sure to give them 1s across the board on the DSRs. When they eventually go "Below Standard" as a seller eBay will hold their payments for weeks before turning the money over.

I've been toying with the idea of doing a site where people sell only video games (consoles, games, retro computers, etc) for this very reason. I buy a lot on eBay and I get ripped off sometimes. It's taken me a long time to learn how to minimize (but not totally prevent) it from happening.
My idea was to build a list of "trusted" users. These users would sell their vintage games, new games, NES hardware, etc.
Think of it as a mixture of YouTube, eBay and Wikipedia. lol

There are already dedicated gaming/computing selling sites (gamegavel, amibay etc), but dealing online with people you don't know will always be risky.
As a (former) seller, I always wished I could differentiate between reasonable buyers and the whine-about-every-dust-speck "collectors."
I recently bought a Pet 4016 from eBay $550 with postage and on arrival both the Pet and the Floppy drive are faulty. The Pet in the picture on eBay clearly shows the Pet plugged in to the wall yet the seller is claiming he did not test and has not used it for years and is now claiming it must have been damaged in transit and this is why the Pet and the Floppy are not working.
I have exchanged three emails now and were just going around in circles, i will be placing a Paypal claim for not as described. His a teacher yet he is quick to anger and claim's to be insulted to my question to have another look at his photo the Pet is clearly plugged into the wall yet you claim you did not test it or powered the unit for years. Why in front of over whelming evidence "His photo" would you keep flogging a dead horse.
The double plug is wired directly to the pets power supply and is clearly plugged in and turned on.
It's a nice Pet and i would prefer to keep it but the fault's are in the monitor board and the main board also the floppy smoked big time and blow the house fuse most likely caps. I guess at the end of the day there is also being pissed off at being lied too and insulted.

I contacted PayPal and filed a not as described claim, the seller offered to refund half the buy price. Done problem solved not to get the Pet working. It was the lie that stuck in my claw it clearly tested an still listed as working.

Thats a kick in the guts it was a very nice looking PET too but at least you got something back it kind of puts me off buying old computers from ebay
@C64web I totally see why you would be angry, but to be honest if someone is taking a picture of the item and it is plugged in but not showing an image on the screen I would assume it's f^$ked really.
But this is how it is, test item out....if it doesn't work put it up as untested on ebay. Saying untested instead of "couldn't get it to turn on or tune it...may be a faulty PSU" is both misleading and bumps up the final bid price amongst the clueless moron group so I think it is only fair you get a partial refund. Clearly he knew it wasn't working.
This is why if I ever see a the curvy PET I always wanted or a nice square one with the keypad I will be driving to collect it, even if it is a 3 hour drive!
My experience with ebay is that either people are intentionally ripping you off or they seriously do not put any effort into testing an item before shipping it. I once sold a laptop and it stopped working just before I was going to pack it away in the box for shipment, I did the decent thing and informed the lady it had stopped working and refunded her money. You never get the cost of returning faulty items back to a seller back from paypal, only original postal costs for them to send it out.
