these games aare mostrly based on my Apple ][ experience but all of them are for C64 to
so ..i think..they are GREAT games ! |
Except, that Karateka on the Apple II plays so much better than on the C64. Check out the C64 version - incredibly slow! You won't believe it!
Karateka thread
If the C64 didn't get widespread usage in Bulgaria (in the Cold War), did Bulgarians use Apple II's in the 1980s ? |

Very interesting about the Pravec 82, drj0nes.
Kareteka: No, I can absolutely assure you that the Apple II version is much faster throughout, compared to the C64 game. I've played both through to completion.
How about posting your above interesting comments, and others on 1980's computing in Bulgaria, to this thread: Commodore 64 in the Former Soviet Union (& Socialist Countries) ? Informative read. |

Not really sure on 10 of them yet. I'll get back to you. It's a shame Usagi wasn't posted here, so I had to make sure it gets a vote. |

On top of my head without playing for years i can comeup with something.
1. Boulder dash (all) (i hate when i get stuck, made me try harder)
2. Giana sisters (i love the power ups)
3. Krakout (probably the most i spend on a game, but after 200 lvl, i was like aww it never end?)
4. Bomb Jack (love the game and the tunes)
5. International karate(i kicked some asses there lol)
thats about it, rest i remember is all my failures, that dident went into my top 5
Zaxxon, well i never kinda figured out how to proceed, but i played it alot too to proceed lol.
thats just one, that may be great, but i dont finish, maybe ill try later
Boulder dash has to be reinvented to today, it was so good we all liked it verry much i see.
All is not about graphics, its about gameplay, and imagine boulderdash was about 1 Mb in sice ? lol best game ever i played |

It's high time I replied to the thread I myself opened

You completed that yet?
|
No, not yet. Frankly, I didn't have a lot of playtime recently. I just played (to completion) Knight'n'Grail (in two days). I'd never heard about it before this thread. Very nice, albeit too easy really.
I had a go at Uridium this past lunchtime, but I met my demise on Tungsten (Dreadnought 8 ). I'm rusty already. What a game!
| Troy wrote: | | Here's a list from me, mostly based on the amount of time I spent with them rather than anything else. Boulder Dash is the only game out of this list that I still put on from time to time. |
I intentionally left the criteria to make one's top 10 open. Are they the games you enjoy now? The games you enjoyed back then? A mixture of both? Whatever else? It's all good for me.
| Troy wrote: | | If I'd had a disk drive and some of those SSI Gold Box Games I can imagine they might have taken over my life. As it is, I've never played them. |
Some of them are good (like Champions of Krynn, Death Knights of Krynn), but not really excellent. But I know the feeling, I'd try Ultima IV or Wasteland right now, if I wasn't afraid they would take over my life

I wouldn't say so! As I stated in the first post, you can change your top 10 even after you posted it, so you could post one now, and another at the end of the year. But yeah, let's hope we'll play fantastic games which will make us change our lists like mad.

Really? A decent, albeit limited bunch of subgames trown over a good but too easy strategy game, beating the almighty ARTD? I don't rate DOTC much, myself, to be honest.

9. Hypersports [2]
10. Samurai Warrior [1]
It was tricky deciding and unfortunately this leaves DOTC of my list because of the awful cassette multiload copy I regretfully bought, the disk version however is fantastic but for this I'm trying to stick to single-loads as I prefer them ( WCL don't count). The Sentinel & First Samurai also didn't quite make it, though First Samurai was a multiload but it was an easy one. Shit congrats screen though _________________ |

Yes, I had an off day when I posted my Top 10: AR: The Dungeon is my favourite game for 99% of the year. (However, will be lucky to play it much this year).
Even so, as an entire package, good ol' Defender of the Crown is awesome! Playing it these days is like relaxation therapy. Too easy, but enough variety. Atmospheric fun. Gorgeous piece of work. |

Yeah, I see your points. I like DOTC, I just don't rank it near the top of my list. It's a good, pleasurable game. _________________

I don't play 64 games now apart from in the games comps. I never seem to have the time any more. But a list based on games I've played in the competitions would go,
1) Dropzone
2) Crossfire (never seen it before the comp)
3) Bubble Bobble (barely played it before the comp)
4) Uridium
5) Encounter
6) Bounty Bob
7) Batty (never seen it before the comp)

I don't tend to post in these things for subjective reasons, but decided it was a good challenge and a bit of fun to try to identify ten of my best. Here's what I managed to come up with:
1. Bard's Tale III: The Thief of Fate
2. Curse of the Azure Bonds
3. Fist II: The Legend Continues
4. The Last Ninja
5. Green Beret
6. Mystery Island
7. Galaxy
8. Street Rod
9. Colossus Chess 2.0
10. Wizard of Wor
Should be interesting to come back to the thread at the end of the year!

Come to think of it, Collosus Chess and Tetris should be the true number 1 and 2 top C64 games of all time, seeing as they are both still 'current' games, and you can't argue with 7 billion people.
I still surprised me that almost all modern chess programs on PC and phone take longer to think for a half decent move than C64 Collosus chess did! |

Ok my Ten - More ranked in the amount of hours enjoyment I think I got from them when growing up
1 - Elite - The reason is in the title!
2 - ACE
3 - Cyberdyne Warrior
4 - Catalypse
5 - Magicland Dizzy
6 - Ghostbusters
7 - Kikstart II
8 - Football Manager - So simple but so satisfying and I don't even like football!
9 - Rodland
10 - Maze Mania
These could just have easily made it in
Squirm - I actually had this on a C16. my mate gave me the C16 as he thought it was crap once he had a Mega Drive - Idiot!
HERO - (Only recently discovered this, if I had it as a kid, I'm sure it would be in the ten)
Head over Heels
Hover Bovver
Batakyx
Bubble Dizzy
Leviathan - (First game I ever loaded on my original 64, think it's why I have a soft spot for it)
Slicks |

I was thinking about resurrecting this thread (as the deadline is approaching), but you did it already, thank you
I'm afraid I can't count Paradroid twice, though. Please choose another game in your top 10. _________________

Picking just ten great games is really difficult! For now I'd say:
1. Pirates! (never get bored with this one)
2. AR: The Dungeon (best RPG on the C64 - I'm a connaisseur like Canute)
3. Psi-5 Trading Company
4. Lords of Midnight
5. Laser Squad
6. Bubble Bobble (co-op is best)
7. Blue Max
8. Paradroid
9. Toy Bizarre (one of my favourite platformers on the C64, not that well known unfortunately)
10. Gunship (never did get that CMOH though)
That's not even mentioning many of my other favourites like Fort Apocalypse, Styx, Speedball, Microprose Soccer, Lords of Conquest, Dino Eggs, Ultima III and V...
And recently I very much enjoyed Knight 'n' Grail, Soulless and the C64 port of Canabalt. Just goes to show there's a lot of life left in the old machine. |
