Hard Candy is indeed a great film - caught it on the pics back around 2007
I watched Tyrannosaur last night. Great - but very depressing Brit flick. Similar vein to Nil By Mouth.

The Thing (2011)
Rented the DVD today. It really is nothing new behind the original remake Kurt Russell version. Just more of the same with CGI. Had it been a new movie it probably still wouldn't have been as creepy as the 1981 version.
Since it was a rental I couldn't listen to the commentary to hear the director's reasons for revisioning or whatever the hip hollyworld term is today. But whatever, it wasn't that bad but it was hardly ground breaking. I'll wait and pick up a DVD when it hits the cheap bins in a couple of months.
I think it worth about a 6/10. Probably an 8/10 if it was original movie. But it seems like it was just a rehash of the old material. _________________ Emulation is the sincerest form of flattery. |

Away From Her
Julie Christie stars as a dementia sufferer. Her husband places her in a care home and she shares a bond with another patient. Youching drame, well acted and some light hearted moments.

Cowboys & Aliens (Summer 2011), 6.5/10, rental.
Good show, not too bad, watched it last weekend at home. I had no qualms or complaints about having the mixed genre of Westerns & Sci-fi. Seems some people did. Non-Earthers have been among us since the dawn of time (e.g. see Genesis in OT). The aliens were just too one-dimensional character-wise. If they are so intelligent, capable of stellar travel, why do they go around running and screaming at us humans like wild bears? To scare us silly I suppose. The only alien that had some sort of personality was that surgical one. Apparently this script had been kicking around for about 20 years, which then turned into a graphic novel, of which this movie is based from. Box office-wise, it wasn't that profitable, but hey, it was still a good romp on my 100 inch screen.

Fright Night
The remake of the classic original that had Roddy McDowell in it. Any good? Nah, pretty crap actually. Basically the film was shit. The highlights were seeing the head vampire getting staked with a 'For Sale' sign; Toni Collette (who was Muriel in Muriel's Wedding) having a better figure now than she did twenty years ago; and ... nothing else.
I also took offence at the end song that played over the credits which kept repeating 'I've got 99 problems but my bitch aint one.' Nobody has 99 problems, and if they did have then their 'bitch' would most definitely be one.
(The fact that I watched this film all the way to the end says it can't be that bad. Still, it felt bad. David Tennant plays Russell Brand playing Peter Vincent.) Aren't vampire films supposed to be scary?
Verdict: Fright Shite! |

The Grey
I'd never heard anything about this but still, expectations were low, but wow, what a fine film. Liam Neeson has never been better. Seriously. I kept waiting for it to fall into cliche but it never did. I feel a little guilty at being so cynical in my expectations. Watch it! A real surprise. 9/10 |

The Tree of Life
Do not waste your time. Great cure for insomnia - the images, whispers and music would send you straight to sleep. I watched it all in the hope something (anything) would happen.
It did'nt.

Sling Blade
Hands down one of the best films I have seen in ages, plus one of the greatest performances from a lead actor I have seen in a long while too. Billy Bob is awesome as the insitutionalised man who is released after 30 yrs in a hospital for murdering his mother and lover when he was 12.
Gripped me throughout.

I started watching Boardwalk Empire.
I guess it's one of the best series I've seen since The Sopranos. _________________ |

It's one of those few movies that is almost as good as the book.
I really enjoyed the Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Forgot her real name but the girl playing Lisbeth Salander really kicks ass. I'm really looking forward to chapter two! _________________ |

Is it like that other one with Hopkins and some Baldwin in it where they kill that bear? |

Similair idea; lost in the wilderness. I don't think you can go wrong with it. |

Hugo (2011) - 3/10
As an ardent Scorcese fan I was really looking forward to watching his new film. I'm sure if I had an appreciation for the book it is based on, i'd think differently. At the half way point, I was wondering why I had it on at all. We're all cogs in a machine, with a purpose, blah blah. |

Been a few years since I last saw this, but still pretty good, plus a top performance from Brad Pitt

The Naked Prey
Pretty good 1960's film about a bunch of hunters on a safari in Africa who are kidnapped by a local tribe after refusing to give a gift to it's leader.
One of the men is allowed to run a distance and is then chased by trackers.
Pretty decent to be honest.

I can't find anybody who liked that movie. It made no sense whatsoever.
Even the name is stupid and irrelevant to the story. |

Demolition Man
I know it's an oldie now, but it came on earlier out of the blue and I started to watch and before I knew it it was finished. The perfect blend of comedy and violence. Probably the funniest science fiction film ever. "How can you justify destroying a seven-million dollar shopping mall to save a little girl? F**k you lady! (said by the little girl)" Priceless. 9/10 |

Actually very tense for the first 2/3rds. Then it went off the rails and lost me. |

AFter the rave reviews I was expecting to be blown away, I thought it was pretty ho-hum to be honest

I am really disappointed in you Phoenix. How could you? What was going through your mind, when you wrote that?
How could you possibly give it one point? It scores a solid zero, zilch, nada, nula, nil, nothing, a big doughnut, etc.

The Creation montage was stellar (pun intended). The rest felt like a short story stretched out into a novel.
Sean Penn, who was in the movie, was quoted as saying that he couldn't make much sense out of the final cut. |
