I was first time in London in my life few weeks ago and my girlfriend found retrogamer issue 99 on Luton Airport Smile. It's a great piece of cake, I really enjoy because of "deep-retro" as 8-bits content. Is here any possibility depending on you for sending magazine in sequences (4 issues in one package) to Poland? Or maybe I could do some investigation if some more people in Poland could be interested with purchase retrogamer monthly/per 3 months etc.? I could distribute it directly to people in Poland because I'm interested in retrogaming and I'm involved in some software and hardware development for Commodore 64.

Retro Gamer is a pretty good mag most of the time, but sometimes they go overboard with the console focus. I liked them better back when they had a more "European" identity, with a larger focus on the home computers of the eighties and nineties.

Retro Rated for instance is almost exclusively about console games despite GOG et.c. on the PC. Future Classic is always about some (usually Japanese) console game.

(and believe it or not, I also miss the coverdisc)

This particular issue seems to have a lot of very good stuff though. And I did miss the first issue (the earliest I have is issue 4 I think) so that's cool.

PC download services are now included in the Retro Rated section. Just recently (I feel) there has been a very good balance between computer, console and arcade.

Yeah, I agree the balance has been pretty good in some of the later issues. But Retro Rated is like... if it's a platformer or a Nintendo game (which obviously means it's part of some ancient series as Nintendo hates new stuff), it apparently qualifies for a review.

I wish it had a re-print of issues 2 and 3, the only two issues I'm missing!

I'm only missing 1 and 2...I guess our airmail copies will start arriving this week. I don't know, I've been saying for ages (since maybe ish 80-85) that RG has been going way too modern in recent times (and I don't count PSX/N64 as modern), and that I'd stop buying it after issue 100. Whether I stick to that will remain to seen...

With this Issue 100, how many pages are in the hard copy?

There are 3 DVD compilations so far.

Issue 100 has 116 pages, plus the 100 page reprint of issue 1

I have all 100 issues and now two of issue 1! Confused

I really enjoy the mag, some great articles.

I tend to skip directly to the homebrew pages though. These are far too short for my liking only a double page spread. I want larger reviews of what is around, Zapp style ideally Smile

As for modern stuff, well I dont think it's too bad for that, but the latest remakes, x-box arcade releases and reviews of the latest installments of long running franchises don't interest me much and take a lot of space.

I also enjoyed the cover cds, but the best one was the game music compilation in my opinion. I wouldn't mind another of those Cool

Yeh, Andy's interview was excellent.

I've been waiting years to find out what he has been doing.

Looks like he's been writing Insurance software since quitting the games business, but he did elude in the interview that he's thinking of getting back into game dev. Possibly ios stuff.

Apparently he agreed to the interview after reading Retro Gamers interview with Steve Turner ( Graftgold boss ).

The interview runs to 8 pages, with 7 of those full of text.

If it wasn't so long i'd type it out and post it.

Probably easier for someone to scan it though, then you get the pictures.

I don't have access to a scanner though.

Anyone here like to oblige ?

I forgot to mention, the airmail copies have arrived in Australia now (as of Friday) so those of us who are waiting for it, find a place that sells airmail mags! $21.95 is what I paid. Nine days, pretty fast!

Finally got my issue now, and I have to say it's very good. I mean, I still don't get what games like Soul Calibur V and Resident Evil: Revelations are doing in the reviews section, but there's lots of great content and the annoying Future Classic is nowhere to be seen. The reprint is really cool too.

New games in classic franchises get a review, because people who played the old ones would surely be interested in the new ones. Plus the games get advertised in the mag, bringing in the revenue to pay the freelancers to keep writing great articles...

I think the second part of your answer is a bit more important than the first (and that raises some touchy issues, but let's not get into those).

Due to the heavy sequelitis that's affecting the games industry right now, especially the Japanese part of it, "new games in classic franchises" can mean virtually anything. In my opinion stuff like Soul Calibur isn't any more of a classic franchise than Call of Duty or Medal of Honor. SC was introduced in 1998, meaning it's not much older than a lot of the large franchises today.

Crucially, I don't think people buys a magazine called Retro Gamer to read reviews of modern games that get reviews in pretty much all the multiplatform mags and free gaming websites already. I know I don't.

Issues like these caused me to stop my subscription for at least a couple of years. The only reason I resubscribed was that I actually got my workplace to pay for it ("research", honest). In fairness, I do feel the current RG is better and more interesting than the one I dropped a few years ago.

^ this. Except I'm not sure it's better. I think after 99/100 issues, I might finally be done with it.
