Can someone just confirm that the Jiffydos I require for this drive is the FSD-2? Thanks! |

Yes, it should be FSD-2.
On a side note, here in Italy the OC-118 was often sold with JiffyDOS included _________________ |

I did hear that somewhere too, but on querying the drive I get the following message
73, R-DOS 40TR. 1541,00,00 |

There are 2 or 3 dip switches on the bottom of the drive. If you have 3 switches, one might be for jiffy dos. Then you can try to flip it and see if JD becomes enabled. I have 1 of each version. |

Nah, only two dip switches on mine. Reason I ask is because im sure I read somewhere that certain revisions will only work with the right ROM, and the Oceanic apparently has two variations (I think), just dont want to make a mistake when ordering |

Just researched that DOS message (73, R-DOS 40TR. 1541,00,00) a bit and it seems ive got REX-DOS installed in it, is there any difference to normal CBM? Anyone got further info? |

Just did some tests, loading Nobby the Aardvark to intro screen
Oceanic 23 seconds
1541 mk1 Jiffydos 17 seconds
1541 mk1 CBM rom 25 seconds |

I am not sure what exactly is the difference in REX-DOS, I suppose it would only have advantages together with a suitable kernal rom (not sure if it would actually be faster, but it looks like it would support 40 tracks, then )
However, I am rather sure that the small speed difference between Oceanic with R-Dos and standard 1541 is because of faster motors in the Oceanic drive!
Even with a standard CBM DOS 2.6 the Oceanic would be slightly faster. Afair stores sold the Oceanic with this argument that it loads 10% faster then a standard 1541. _________________ currently looking for:

I remember this being a selling point for the FSD-2 back in the late 80s when I bought one. _________________

Did you ever notice it being faster? I did not. Actually, I had JiffyDOS installed shortly after because I was disappointed. Anyway, I still use it and it has been rock solid without any issues. |

Prior to the FSD-2, I had one of the standard beige 1541s. The speed difference was minimal, if any. Macc's test of a file that took 25 seconds to load on a 1541, and 23 seconds on the FSD-2, seems pretty accurate. I always used an Epyx Fastload cartridge back then, so I'm pretty sure the speed was the same on either drive with the Fastload cartridge. _________________

I had brown 1541 in my original C64 setup for years. Later I got some new loot and Oceanic OC-118 with them.

I did notice that it was actually slightly faster (and much more quiet) than the 1541 drive. Later I found out there was JD ROM in it. I don't know which had more effect on the speed: presumably faster stepper motor or the JD ROM (Of course I did not have JD on the C64). |

That makes sense it could be faster based on hardware differences because that is the only thing that could be different. The drive ROM has to be the same for compatibility. It is 100% 1541 compatible and says 1541 DOS 2.6 when you poll the drive. |

There must be differences how these clone drives have been equipped with different ROMs over time and regions. I have three OC-118 drives (from different sources), and all of them have a factory-labeled JiffyDOS ROM in them, no switch nor socket adapter. I'm quite sure these drives have been equipped with them originally.
EDIT:

Not necessarily, see row "CBM+Jiffy 1541" on the table here: http://www.c64-wiki.com/index....st_loaders |

Interesting, ilesj. I have 2 of these drives and neither had JD in them from the factory. The drive ROMs appear to be the same as 1541 ROMs. |

According to this site the Rex Dos rom seems to be part of a parallel speeder kit similar to Speed Dos, so you would need a parallel cable and a matching kernal rom to make it load stuff significantly faster. _________________

Well, the speed difference would depend on how many files a game or program loads, because for every loaded file the drive has to do a search, which means a big movement for the head back to track 18 and then again to the file's starting track.
On a singe load file, the dfference would probably not make any speed difference at all.
Most Floppy Speeders also speed up the motors during search via changed ROM routines, soit could even be possible that a drive with Jiffydos installed is slightly faster than one with original DOS, even if the C64 is running on standard kernal. _________________ currently looking for:
