One of the best games that I believe that came out way ahead of its time was Neverhood.

I was impressed with the realism in this 1995/1996 game for windows 95. I was shocked at the time that you could see this much detail without needing to render.

Anyone else know of any games that was ahead of its time?

Very impressive - I've never heard of it before.

Modern day, the puzzles and surreal nature reminds me a lot of Machinarium.
