Is there small LCD monitor that would work well with C64 ?

Size could be maybe about 19".

I have had Samsung 940MW, it did broke and pic could be better. I think PSU did die, heard its common with those.

Wish there was still monitors/tvs that werent wide screen, but cant find any.. Confused

Find a secondhand TV and you'll be okay. A lot of people here and in Italy communities are currently talking about TV/LCDs, I think it's becoming a common need and we should rescue some good old TVs for C64 and retrogaming in general.

Would a little list of recommended brands help? I have my favourities and I'm sure other members here have their preferences Smile

Yes. I have old monitors. Philips and Sony studio monitor. But trying to find best LCD monitor option for C64. It takes less space and is easyer take with you to party. Also it would look smaller at my kitchen table.. Cool

I use a Dell 2000FP (or is it FP2000). It's a 20" 4:3 LCD with S-Video input.

The one I have works really well for my NTSC C64. I have a PAL C64 that was converted from a NTSC C64 and it also works. I have a C64 G, but it has some strangeness going on...

When I turn it on, I get some kind of ghosting on the screen, however, if I change the screen colors to black (foreground and background), and then hit run/stop + restore to revert back to the blue colors, it looks perfectly fine.

However, I run my C64's through an Onkyo receiver that has S-Video switching and the NTSC and PAL C64's both come out of the Onkyo to the monitor just fine Smile

These Dell LCD monitors can be had for about $50 here in the states. I also have my PC hooked up through it so that I can just use the button on the front of the monitor to switch between DVI (or VGA), and S-Video. I think it also has Composite input too.

True, but it's a cheap and easy find on eBay, at least here in the USA. And who wants to listen to the C64 through a monitor speaker anyways?

I have mine hooked up to an Onkyo receiver with the audio coming out of some nice speakers. I don't have stereo SID, so I just took the mono audio into both channels on the receiver.

I think it would be incredibly difficult to find any NEW 4:3 LCD TV's with S-Video input, but who knows. I'm sure those are all over sites like eBay too, but I don't know any model numbers.

I wonder if there are LCD monitors that can do 50 Hz refresh rate? In AltParty, one of the C64s was hooked up to an LCD monitor. I suspect that the monitor couldn't do 50 Hz refresh rate because I experienced emulator-like ... GASP! ... non-smooth scrolling with that C64! Surprised

Good thing I still have my old-school, non-LCD 1084S monitor with my C64! Smile

Maybe it has to be wide screen then... But when use it at computer party, internal speakers would be nice. I am used to SX64, so those monitor speakers are Hi-Fi Laughing

Widescreen can be OK as you can usually zoom in on the middle part of the screen were most of the action usually is unless it's demos.

It should be possible to find a 4:3 LCD TV in Finland as well, at least a used one.

Maybe this one?

I use a Coby TFTV1212. It is a 12" LCD screen with S-Video and VGA inputs.
It is slightly widescreen.
IIRC, the native resolution is 1280x768 but I use it mostly to display the PAL and NTSC signals of my MCC.
There are few display artifact on fast horizontal movements because of the video deinterlacer.

Regards,

Frederic

Chameleon should be released some time soon we hope.
EDIT: still on pre-order at moment.

on the subject of TVs. my first TV was a PYE TV RF only no scart, from the early 80s. i still have that tv in the loft. i used that with the 64 when i got it. must of got it in 83 or 84.

my second TV was a SONY trinitron or mintatron as my friend used to call it then. that was an amazing TV to use with the commodore 64 and the Amiga. scart supported RGB dont know about s video, i am not sure if it supported it through the scart. I still have the SONY TV too.

now i use two philips a few years old now 32" and 26" LCD screens not full HD. both support s-video, VGA/PC , DVI/PC, SCART/RGB and composite. The 32" does support component input, handy for the wii.

The PSOne LCD screens were popular among the C64 DTV crowd.

100% agree with Oge_user.

Everyone, grab a Large flat screen CRT TV with S-Video input, while you still can, these are great for the C64, much better than any LCD (for C64 stuff) in my opinion anyway.

I have a large LCD and Large flat screen CRT (both with S-video input) which I use with my C64, the CRT is the better one for the C64.

But that doesn't solve the space issue, and you could just get a Commodore monitor instead Razz applicable to other machines though. Besides, if you're a perfectionist, I doubt you'll ever find a suitable LCD screen that doesn't lag. If you buy new, it's possible. But that size screen generally lags.

I agree with Stringray. And I must add that I'd prefer to use a c64 on a late model 62-68cm crt via rf cable then a commodore monitor any day. The monitors are just too bloody small.

Hi jerrykurtz,

You said earlier that you use the Dell FP2000 LCD with success for both NTSC and PAL. However, the specs for the LCD only sync down to 56 Hz:

Horizontal scan range: 31 kHz to 80 kHz (automatic)
Vertical scan range: 56 Hz to 76 Hz (automatic)

Does running the LCD via the switch in the Onkyo receiver remedy the sync issue? If so, this would be solution for many would-be LCD users!

I'm not a guru on video signals at all, but here's my thought on why it works. The LCD has an S-VIDEO input on it, so there's some kind of circuitry built in that does whatever it needs to convert the S-VIDEO to whatever it needs.

When I have my NTSC C64 connected, the monitor's on screen menu shows it at 60Mhz. When I have my PAL C64 connected, it shows 50Mhz.

I get a color picture in both instances. Still not as good as a CRT, but it works OK. I have noticed that darker colors work best. Bright colors tend to bleed and cause a little ghosting.

I now have two PAL systems. A NTSC machine that was converted to PAL by r.cade. This system works great. I also have a C64G, but I was getting some issues with bleeding colors on the LCD screen when connected directly.

When I connected them through my Onkyo receiver, the color bleeding issue from the C64G seems to have went away.

For all I do with the C64, this seems to be working quite well. I don't know if it would suit a hardcore gamer though.

Jerry

I have an old Dell 2000FP also. I don't have a PAL 64, but I do have a PAL Amiga so I tried hooking that up. I can confirm that it works at 50 Hz. The only issue I had was that PAL Hires Interlace mode suffered from bad flashing where the NTSC Hires Interlace mode had a little, but wasn't so noticable.

I've got one of those. It looks exactly the same except for the labeling and mine using a 60 Hz power supply.

Anyways, it works pretty well. I get a very slight border on one side, but it is pretty minor. That looks like a good buy to me.
